Grundig radio/turntable console

Grundig radio/turntable console

hi all! please ignore my mess, we just moved in and haven’t set anything up yet.

I have this beautiful Grundig console that I’m ready to restore. Looking for resources, tips, personal experience, etc. I was reading that you shouldn’t even power it on without some special tool to make sure it doesn’t get overwhelmed after years of non-use. I did plug it in before I realized it turns on just by having a power source. (oops?)

I also plan to replace the speaker screen that’s stained and saw they sell replicas on Etsy. Kind of overwhelmed myself and don’t know where to start!

Otherwise—please enjoy the view! lol

Found MCM wall mounted wooden things at estate sale, 14” tall, signed Tim Pfeffer 1958…how to complete?

I bought these not knowing exactly what they are but thinking I’ll like them once completed. they have wax residue so I’m assuming they're MCM candleholders of sorts. No clue what I’m looking for in order to make them usable!

Looking for date info on new vase

I found this large beautiful floor vase today at an estate sale and was curious if anyone had thoughts on age. I assume mid century? It was covered in thick layers of years old dust and grime but after some cleaning, I think it looks wonderful.

Similar cases with different hallmarks

hi! was hoping someone could help me understand why these are so similar yet different with different marks. the heights are slightly off and the quality in painting is different. I assume they were made in the same factory for different distributors? thanks for any insight!

Virginia USA Small celadon collection

I bought these from a neighbor’s estate sale before they went to the bins. Her father was stationed overseas and brought home a lot of Chinese and Japanese decor and all of the Siam celadon was gone by the time I went over. I wondered if people simply didn’t want these or just didn’t recognize them as celadon (or maybe I’m totally wrong?) Any celadon experts?

The festering hatred even in unexpected places

I cannot make this up. For context, I work in a very white, very wealthy part of an already wealthy U.S. state. I was born here to Argentine parents but I’m writing this in English because I communicate better in this language lrcpmqlrmp.

Today I went to Whole Foods for lunch and noticed a deli employee wearing an Argentina shirt. I was like hmm, that’s cool, I should go say hi. There was an older, distinguished-looking Indian man talking to him, and I heard “Messi” so I assumed he was a Bangladeshi Argentine. After I ate, I walked over and asked the employee if he was Argentine.

He said no, he just liked the shirt. I asked if he liked the team. “No,” he said. “I don’t like how they play.“ Oh lol, fair enough.

As I was turning to walk away, I just said, “There’s a lot of misinformation out there. Make sure you’re doing your own research about Argentina and its people.” Never in my wildest did I think that old man was a walking Twitter troll but oh boy.

He immediately jumped in and siad I must be Argentine, and started talking about how racist Argentines are and how they can’t get over the war and blahblahblah. At one point he mentioned he was an England supporter, which made the whole thing make more sense but I didn’t realize the aggression this dude was carrying.

I was just going to let it go until he brought up the “Argentine female politician” who supposedly made racist comments about Mbappé on Twitter. I asked, “Do you mean the Paraguayan lawmaker?” I was like, why are you confusing these two completely separate countries?

He was excited to prove me wrong and pulled out his phone. Then he looked at it, realized I was right, and immediately switched to, “Well, I know Argentines are racist because I lived through it.”

By this point I was highly annoyed so I asked if he was maybe confusing Argentina with England (lol) including its colonial history and the regular far-right incidents that still happen there today.

That set him the *fuck* off. He had turned almost purple and was sneering at me and getting closer and closer and running his mouth a hundred miles an hour. He said those incidents were one off and not indicative of the country as a whole and why was I (!!!) bringing politics into it. Real rich of him.

Anyway, I’m a woman, and wasn’t about to stand there arguing with a clearly unhinged man in a Whole Foods especially since people were starting to watch. As I was leaving, I cut him off from his raging diatribe, told him to stop being part of the problem and to learn how to contribute to the betterment of the world lol, and told the kid in the Argentina shirt not to take one person’s word for it and to do his own research.

I looked over my shoulder the whole way back to my car.

Anyway, I’m still kind of shaken. The shit is real and it’s out there getting out of hand and it’s festering in places you’d never expect.

Julio González authenticated by Roberta Gonzalez

Found this graphite figure drawing at a thrift store in Northern Virginia. The back has a handwritten authentication in French by Roberta González (Julio González’s daughter), dating it to around 1905–1910.

I took it to Antiques Roadshow, and the appraiser estimated it at around $1,500–2,000. The Julio González authentication committee charges about €300 for an authentication, but I’m wondering if it’s worth it since it already has Roberta’s authentication on the back.

If this were yours, would you pay for the authentication or leave it as is? Also, how would you house something like this so it’s protected but both sides are still visible?

MCM set - ID help

I recently found a few sets of these and am having trouble finding any information on them. I figured I’d ask here in case anyone knows the maker or where they fit in the grand scheme of cocktail timeline. They have a pontil scar on the bottom so I assumed they’re blown glass but that’s about all I can figure out!

It’s hard to tell but the first one has three colors, white, blue, and black.

Virginia, USA Doulton’s decanter/pitcher

hi all, having a hard time finding information on this pitcher. I bought it from a reseller in Virginia a few weeks ago and loved it for its aesthetic after having just returned from Turkey. He said it was unmarked and I didn’t see the mark until I got home. Any information would be appreciated—could this be 1800’s Royal Doulton? Unsure what the little mark is by the maker name.

Painted scenes on necklace, bracelet, and earrings

Hi all! wanted to share a set my husband gifted me recently that we know nothing about. I’m assuming the painted scenes are enamel because the backs are white with green/blue speckles. No marks but the metal isn’t magnetic, fwiw. Any thoughts welcomed and very much appreciated!

Glass set - the dreaded chipped glass

curious what yalls take is on selling sets of glassware (cups, flutes, etc.) where one might be chipped. I wonder if adding the chipped one to the set brings more value than leaving it out? not sure where my head’s at on this one and would appreciate some thoughts! I have sets of 8, 6, and 4 where at least one has a chip. I hate uneven sets, personally.
