Lucky me!

Lucky me!

Many of you might have seen my posts about the recurring issues with my Thomson AD-100 (Clone of Hitachi DA-1000).

Thanks to the wonders of the internet i managed to get in touch with a gentleman in Australia who works for a hitachi parts supplier. Originally they only had the full laser pickup mechanism which is more than i needed, but after a long shot query to the supplier they actually had just the optical block with the ribbon cables on its own, in NOS condition.

I appreciate there are far better players out there, but this player has become sentimental to me, and i’m still infatuated with the technology brought out during the rise of digital audio.

Massive thanks to https://probe.com.au/ocart2/index.php?route=common/home

The journey isn’t over, it’s gotta make its way here, and i need to find a repair tech to swap them out 😬

LED strip advice

Hi everyone,

I’m new to this so bare with! I’m getting a small collection of glass from ebay, and I’m looking to store them in a cabinet with UV LED strips.

Does anyone have any suggestions for any good brands? I’m not fussy on budget.

Thanks!

Akai GX-F51 issues

Hello all,

I opened the transport on this Akai GX-F51 to realign the head, and it looks like someone has been in before me and given up.. the reason? One of the azimuth screws is stripped

I’ve tried the rubber band and tape method, to no avail as it’s quite small.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I’m sure it’s possible with the right technique

Also… where can i find the screws? Internet searches are showing no results 🥲

Thanks!

My Thomson AD-100 plays Eurythmics

About this CD player

The Thomson AD-100 is one of many
OEM clones of the (in) famous Hitachi DA-1000

Sony and Phillips collaborated to create the compact discs (earlier known as Digital Audio Discs) and the compatible technology to read and reproduce audio.

Hitachi were one of the first to adapt this technology, using their own bespoke optical pickup assemblies and logic chips. This revised model is fitted with a 14 bit Burr Brown DAC.

Many companies were ready in waiting for the rise of digital audio, but the tech was scarce. The solution was all OEM tech which was put together, and many brand names stamped on the front panels. Brands include: Sanyo, Denon, Lo-D, Nordmende, JVC and many more.

Each clone has a distinct design to the player as a whole, with the internals all being the same, just different layouts.
The JVC XL-V1 was the most ambitious design, whereas the Hitachi DA-1000 was quintessentially 1980s

This is a first generation CD player, it has its quirks and limitations, but as a device to read and play red book discs, this is an interesting bit of audio history.

Anti skate - what am i doing???

Hi all,

I have a Technics SP10-MK2 with a rega RB880 tonearm fitted with the Audio-Technica VMN60 SLC.

The tracking force spec on the cart is 2 grams, so naturally i set the anti skate to 2. A hifi specialist calibrated and fitted the stylus and arm, but in the process of cleaning the arm i have moved the anti skate gauge slightly.

I haven’t attempted the CD test as apparently this isn’t accurate based on a 12” disc, and i don’t have any blank LPs. Whilst there’s no audio concerns, online sources say the stylus should slowly drift to the centre when near the run out, and some say it should stay perfectly still. In order for the anti skate to be perfectly still, it doesn’t reflect 2 grams on the anti skate setting on the arm, and for it to drift to the centre slowly, same applies. It stays perfectly still on a runout groove at 2 grams.

Any help on this would be great. I am a perfectionist for things being as accurate as possible.

Combi boiler pressure issues - UK

Hi all,

We have a Worcester greenstar which was installed in 2015 before we owned our house. Last year we had a boiler service which was all clear, and full radiator replacement and new pipes.
Since around December last year we've noticed the boilers pressure is dropping sharply (from 1.5 to zero in under 12 hours). This indicates a LOT of water being lost from the system via a leak.
We lifted the floors downstairs expecting to find a swimming pool, mould or some kind of evidence of a leak... nothing
The plumber who did all the work including the service said it was a failed expansion vessel, this was replaced and the issue still persists.
The boiler also makes loud rushing noises every few hours when the pressure is low.
Does anyone know what might be causing this? My next thought is the PRV however we see no water dripping outside, nor can we over pressurise the boiler.

Thanks!

1930s light switch reproductions

We’re replacing all our light switches and plug sockets in our 1930s house with these bakelite switches/sockets. Finally we’re adding some character back into a house that lost it before we owned it.

30s house decor

Hi everyone,

I bought a 1930s house last year that unfortunately had all of its original features removed. We’re painstakingly adding original character back into it, starting with decor and hardware. These are reproduction bakelite light switches with wood plinths. They look great and add that little bit of detail most houses miss. They also make plug sockets in the same style.

Enjoy

Hi all,

Long story short, we had this wall plastered and painted originally, but now we need to add a door frame to the left of the photo. There was a door frame there originally as there were two rooms knocked into one before we bought the house. I’m unsure what lies beneath the plaster as the walls are 30s lath/timber construction.

We’re splitting the room up again to create an upstairs bathroom, so will i need to be mindful of anything structural before we start knocking a hole through? Or will a frame header do? Typical ceiling joists in ceiling/loft.

Many thanks!
