What am I missing in my setup?!

Trying to build a DAWless setup like you guys have! Been really inspired by this group. I’m trying to make 2000’s style house music.

I currently have:
- Arturia Astrolab 37 keyboard (1,600 sounds)
- Avatar PD-708 drum pads (1,000 sounds)
- Akai MPC Sample (this does looping!)
- Sm58 mic with Roland Vt-5 voice effects box
- Roland t-8 drum machine

What am I missing? What should I consider adding next?

UPDATE: Just found a great deal on a used Roland Tr-6s and picked it up!

Help me hire an Ableton engineer!

Hi everyone,

I have a House track that currently exists as a demo/reference track. I really like the song and would love to bring it into Ableton and turn it into something properly produced.

Ideally, I’d like to work with someone who has experience producing polished House music. I’m hoping to improve the arrangement and sound design, get the mix sounding professional, and hopefully learn a few things along the way.

For the experienced Ableton producers here: where would you recommend looking for someone like this? And roughly what should I expect to pay?

Also, is this the kind of project producers generally enjoy working on, or is there a better way I should be approaching it?

Thanks! I appreciate any advice. Feel free to DM me here or on Insta - @Dlaney__

Looking to hire Ableton producer. Paid role.

Hi everyone!

I’m looking to hire an experienced Ableton producer to help me work on and finish some House music tracks.

I’m hoping to find someone who has experience producing polished House/electronic music and is comfortable with arrangement, sound design, mixing, and getting a track across the finish line.
Ideally, I’d like this to be collaborative.

This is a paid opportunity, and I’m happy to pay a fair rate for someone’s time and experience.

If this sounds like something you’d be interested in, please send me a message with a little about yourself, some examples of your music, and your rates.

Thanks everyone! Really appreciate it

How do we link to our new community? It almost always gets deleted.

People on Reddit love deleting people’s posts.

How do you link people to your subreddit without getting deleted by overly controlling mods?

Would anyone want to set up a subreddit for learning multiple instruments at once?

Might be really helpful to have. Like a community that helps people learn quickly so they can be better loopers.

Why people are so angry about AI music

I want to be honest about why I think AI music gets such a strong negative reaction from some people.

For many musicians, making music is more than just something they do. It’s part of their identity. They’ve spent years developing a skill that feels deeply personal and uniquely human. So when AI can suddenly create impressive music from something as simple as a prompt, it can be uncomfortable and even humbling.

I think some of the resistance to AI music comes from that. It challenges our assumptions about what makes creativity valuable and what it means to be a musician.

Personally, I think a better approach is to embrace what’s becoming possible. AI can create some genuinely incredible music, but more importantly, it gives NEWBIES a remarkable amount of control over the result. They can shape the style, mood, lyrics, instruments, structure, and countless other details until the music reflects what they wanted to create.

Instead of thinking of AI as something that takes creativity away from people, I see it as something that gives many more people the ability to create.

Can you sample a YouTube video with a MPC including the visuals?

Is there any tool that lets you load up a YouTube video and sample it and it chops up the video in real time as well?

That would be so fun to play with.

Imagine being able to connect your MPC Sample and just chop up an old video on Youtube in real time.

Has anyone figured out how to do that yet?

Looking for a female Gospel vocalist for a House track — paid opportunity

Hi everyone!

I’m working on a new Gospel House track and I’m looking for a female vocalist with a strong Gospel/Soul style to sing on it.

I’m looking for someone who can bring that powerful, soulful Gospel energy to the record — expressive vocals, some grit.

This is a paid opportunity.

If you’re a vocalist or know someone who might be a great fit, I’d love to connect and hear some examples of your work and work out pricing.

Thanks so much!

Is this the FASTEST way to Live Loop on the MPC Sample?

Live looping Akai Sample 101!

  1. Shift + Project (pad 16). Load up “Demo 2”
  2. Click SEQ and hold erase and click and delete all sequences in Sequence Bank A. Click Pad 1 to select.
  3. Set BPM, bars & Quant.  (I use 2 bars and 1/8th for quant.)
  4. Click both Sample + Sequence at same time so you can more clearly see them both.
  5. Click Seq Record + Play. Play high hat or drums and record beat sequence.
  6. Click Pad Bank to go to Sample Pad Bank B.

—> 7. PRESET PADS - Click Seq Record + Play. Quickly tap 4 empty pads and 4 empty above it. You can click stop immediately after. Click play to make sure they light up.

  1. Now live loop! Click play for the beat and then click “Sample Record.” Then click first pad to begin recording. Record instrument & close pad right before it ends. Do it to the next one.

And SAVE your project as like “Loop template” so you can easily load up in the future and save time.

Would anyone be interested in writing 3 songs together over the next two weeks?

Hi everyone!

I had a little idea and wanted to see if anyone here might be interested. Would anyone like to work alongside each other with a simple goal of finishing 3 songs over the next two weeks?

They absolutely don’t have to be perfect. In fact, that’s kind of the point. Just encouraging each other to write, finish things, share what we’re working on, and hopefully learn from one another along the way.

There are clearly a lot of talented and experienced songwriters here, and I’d personally love the opportunity to learn from how other people approach the process.

No competition and no pressure. Just a few people writing songs, sharing progress, giving each other some encouragement, and seeing what we can create in two weeks.

Would anyone be interested in doing something like this? If you have ideas for how to structure it, I’d love to hear them!

Best small hardware box for live looping? Is a used MPC One the answer?

Hi everyone!

I’m looking for a small, dedicated hardware box for live looping. I specifically want something physical, no iPad, laptop, worrying about the screen going to sleep, opening apps, etc. I want to turn on a box and start making music.

The best option I’ve found so far seems to be a used MPC One for around $400.

I really like the idea of having 16 physical pads so I can record different loops/samples and build up a performance. I’ve looked at some of the Boss loopers as well, but the MPC seems like it would give me a lot more flexibility for roughly the same investment.

My priorities are basically:

  • Small standalone hardware
  • Easy live sampling/looping
  • Lots of physical pads/controls
  • Ability to build up multiple layers quickly
  • No computer or iPad required

For those of you who actually do hardware live looping: would you buy a used MPC One, or is there another box I should be looking at?

I feel like I might be overlooking an obvious piece of gear, so I’d love to hear what you guys are using.

Thanks!

Does Live Looping actually work on the MPC Sample?

Hi everyone,

The good news is that Live Looping DOES actually kinda work on the MPC Sample. You can see a great video here from NervousCook$: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L2bdTgi-xNI

I believe I have it working by setting the blank/ghost pads, and it works pretty well with the first set of 4 pads. The problem comes when I want to keep building the loop out to 8, 12, or 16 pads.

When I queue up the next set of ghost pads, I’m getting a slight delay, which throws the loop out of time.

Has anyone figured out a reliable way around this?

I’d love to be able to continuously sample and build up a live loop across all 16 pads, but the delay is the one thing stopping the workflow from really working for me.

Am I setting something up incorrectly, or is this just a limitation of the MPC Sample?

Would really appreciate hearing from anyone who has experimented with this!
