siccome non ho abbastanza hobby nella vita e lavorare a maglia e all'uncinetto e giocare ai gdr non mi portano via abbastanza tempo, ho deciso di imparare a filare.

proprio a filare le fibre, prendere i bioccoli di lana e trasformarli in unico, lungo filo. mi sono detto, la lana pre filata e pre tinta costa un botto mentre una matassa di fibra di lana lavata, cardata e non tinta, anche se è tipo tosata dalla pecora che ha dato il vello d'oro di Giasone costa un decimo. mi sono detto, quanto può essere difficile? gli esseri umani lo fanno da millenni, letteralmente la filatura e la tessitura sono due tecnologie fondative dell'umanità assieme al vasellame e al fuoco!

ecco, è difficile. non impossibile, ma produrre un filo che abbia uno spessore sempre uguale e la torsione giusta è complicato. io sto usando un fuso a caduta (sostanzialmente un bastoncino con un peso in cima che aiuta nella rotazione), e onestamente non so se questo mi stia rendendo le cose più difficili rispetto ad usare un filatoio, che è azionato elettricamente o con un pedale e che quindi libera entrambe le mani per gestire le fibre. bisogna prendere sempre la stessa quantità di fibra, assicurarsi che non si stacchi dalla matassa (giù madonne quando succede), assicurarsi che non ci vada torsione dentro prima del tempo, assicurarsi che la torsione avvenga nel modo corretto altrimenti ci si trova con una sorta di incarto di caramella con le estremità strette e il centro ciccione...

e poi è lentissimo. madonna se è lentissimo. non vi rendete minimamente conto di quanto è lento filare a mano. ci sto mettendo GIORNI a filare un etto di lana. un etto, non sto parlando di un vello intero che sono svariati chili. no signore e signori, un etto. cento fottuti grammi che mi stanno portando via intere giornate. con un filatoio (la classica ruota da filatura) si va più in fretta, e con un filatoio elettrico si va ancora più in fretta, ma i filatoi sono un'invenzione "recente", nel senso che l'ipotesi più probabile è che siano stati creati in medio oriente nell'11 secolo, stando a wikipedia. quindi fino all'anno mille e oltre, la gente ha continuato a filare con i fusi a caduta. ora, io non sono certo un maestro filatore, che va sicuramente più rapido di mee cento grammi di lana li fila probabilmente in meno di un'ora: ma anche con un filatoio elettrico domestico (non parlo di filatoi industriali) per processare un singolo vello ci vogliono GIORNI. immaginate la quantità di tempo che ci vuole per esempio per filare il necessario per un solo paio di calzini (sui 200g circa). immaginate quanto tempo ci vuole per filare il necessario per un vestito, per una bandiera, per una tenda, o per una vela.

pian pianino sto imparando a gestire torsione e quantità di lana, ma ci vorrà ancora un po' perchè riesca a produrre del filato utilizzabile, anche perchè non è che il filato appena fatto si può usare: va ritorto perchè non è stabile. devo fare anche un po' di ricerca per capire se un filatoio è effettivamente più facile da utilizzare rispetto a un fuso a caduta.

In Italy, it's definitely Christmas. It's considered a moment to be spent with family, and we even have a proverb that goes: "natale con I tuoi, pasqua con chi vuoi". It literally translates to "Christmas with yours (family/ relatives) Easter with whoever you want".

Easter opens the season for travelling since the weather is nice, so it's traditional to go for a "Gita fuori porta", a day trip out of the city's door.

Post non troppo serio, ma porca puttana se è stancante avere a che fare con centinaia di deficienti che non sanno trovarsi il culo con le mani, che non riescono a seguire la più semplice delle istruzioni (vai dritto in fondo al corridoio e a destra! E loro so fermano a metà corridoio e vanno a sinistra), e che credono che tutto gli sia dovuto.

La maggior parte delle persone sono normali, ma siccome di gente ne vedo tanta, statisticamente trovo un botto di gente idiota. Vorrei poterli menare dio santo.

so, I'm learning how to spin and of course twist is a massive issue. I notice that I tend to overtwist the yarn, which as a result gets all kinda looped and twisted on itself (I'm not a native english speaker so I'm not sure whether there's a proper term for it?). is there some indicator that I'm overtwisting my yarn before I wind it onto the spin handle?

So, I work in a small museum in italy. Yesterday we had a couple from northern Europe coming in to visit.

You need to know that in Scandinavia it's common for parents to leave the children to sleep in their strollers outside of the house and various establishments, since it's extremely safe.

This is absolutely not the case in southern Europe, especially here in Italy. That counts as child abandonment and I would very much not deem it safe for a child to be alone in a public space, especially one as trafficked as the specific area where I work.

This couple decided to leave their sleeping child (3/4 yo) in the space between the lifts and the bathrooms, where we (the staff) do not pass through often. I only realised that she had been left there because I passed through two times in the span of 20 minutes.

Thankfully we were able to locate the parents real quick (it is a small museum as I said) and they were really surprised when we told them that doing that was really dangerous and in the best case scenario could result in having the police called on them for child abandonment.

My supervisors all agreed with me, but some other people just brushed it off and said "but it's normal for them! And nothing happened, so what's the problem?"

So... AITA?

Fresca di stamattina: due scandinavi (presumo) hanno lasciato davanti agli ascensori la bambina di massimo tre anni addormentata nel passeggino e sono andati tranquillamente a vedere la mostra. Me ne sono accorto io perché sono passato per caso vicino alla carrozzina due volte in un quarto d'ora (solitamente non passiamo in quel punto), e al secondo passaggio ho notato che la carrozzina era ancora lì, quindi i genitori non erano nei bagni vicini... Recuperati i genitori, gli abbiamo detto di non lasciare *mai* i bambini incustoditi, che se no rischiano una denuncia. Il padre era tutto sorpreso. Cioè tu smolli la il cucciolo, da solo, che potrebbe succedere veramente la qualunque, e ti sorprendi se qualcuno si spaventa???

Ora, noi siamo un museo piccolo e difficilmente ti portano via il cinno, ma comunque io non mi fiderei mai nella vita! Specie in un paese straniero! E se il bimbo si sveglia e decide di andarsene in giro, e poi si fa male?

I'm slowly getting better at making hash browns, but they're still not perfect. They're possibly way too thin, and they soak up *so* much oil that at this point I might as well deep fry them!

I grate the potatoes, wash them to remove the excess start and then dry them thoroughly, season with salt and pepper and put small heaps on a well oiled, very hot pan. I squash them with a spatula, wait until the bottom settles and then I start flipping them until they're nice and crispy on both sides.

Please give me your best tips for the perfect hash browns!

ETA: I can't buy pre shredded potatoes or frozen hashbrowns. they're not a thing in my country (closest thing are potato rosti, but they're more a thing in the regions that border with austria and switzerland, not where I live)

I am currently dming an Achtung! Cthulhu campaign, and one of the villains is Captain Wolfgang Reiter of the Nachtwolfe. He has shown that he will cooperate with the characters if it furthers his own goals (he very much doesn't want the Black Sun to reach their goal) but he's still a nazi, so he will betray the characters with no qualms.

This is exactly what he did. I sent the characters on a mission to retrieve two magic objects that the Nachtwolfe want to give to an American millionaire who wants to use them for his presidential campaign, and Reiter was the courier. This millionair has loaned a lot of cash to the nazi party before the war, and the magic items are his repayment.

The American courier was the son (Lewis) of said millionaire, who went to Switzerland to retrieve the items.

Unbeknownst to all of them, a regular spy of the German secret service was there to kidnap Lewis in order to make his father forgive the loan (she has no idea that there are magic items involved, or that magic exists at all).

In all this, Reiter convinced them that the regular spy was the courier, that she worked for the nachwolfe black sun, and that he'd help them, they never even thought to ask if he was lying or not, they trusted him blindly. This devolved in a very satisfying standoff and later a car chase, and now they hate the guy with a passion.

Giusto poco fa sul bus c'era sta tipa chiaramente più fatta di una pera... Di cosa non so, ma probabilmente era un qualche tipo di stimolante perché pareva che l'avessero battezzata con l'acqua dei folpi. Parlava a voce altissima, si agitava sul sedile, rideva, non stava ferma un attimo e si rivolgeva a tutti indistintamente, parlando di servigi sessuali a buon prezzo (non mi è chiaro se li stesse offrendo o se li stesse cercando). Fortunatamente ha capito di essere sul bus sbagliato, mi dispiace molto per quelli dell'altra linea che se la sono trovata tra capo e collo.

Era chiaramente di ottimo umore, ma onestamente non so mai come comportarmi quando trovo uno così: non so mai se potrebbe reagire male e diventare aggressivo, per non parlare del fatto che sono veramente molesti.

Che si fa? Li si ignora?

The hooks I'm using right now (no brand from my lys) have a very shallow hook, and it makes it difficult for me to grab the yarn.

Does anyone know of a brand that sells in Europe that has a deeper groove of the hook?
