Which system?

Hi, apologies as I imagine this gets asked a lot, but where should I start? Looking to get a small set up, mainly as an excuse for collecting the cars. Digital appeals but coming from a railway modelling background the multiple and incompatible systems are very confusing.

I’m in the UK, so it looks like any of Carrera, SCX or Scalextric are available, with obviously a stronger secondhand market in Scalextric. In time I’d maybe want to try creating a rally stage set up, but a simple circuit would suffice for now.

Open to any suggestions and if anyone wants to share pictures of their rally stage builds I’d be very interested.

How to paint “wood”

Hi folks, after some inspiration for painting the building and wagon kits. I’m assuming that most would be primarily fresh unpainted wood, since the west was essentially “new”. What do folks do - I’m thinking a brown primer and then extensive dry brush of pale sand shades. Does that sound viable?

Working on my first building

So I wanted to see if I could make the front wall solid, so that the porch or whatever can sit against it. Probably not an original idea - sawed the front edge off the ceiling panel, glued it and the false front on. I’m hoping that if this method works I can reuse it for any two storey buildings with veranda/balconies etc. Has anyone else found the panels difficult to glue? My usual Plastic Magic doesn’t really seem to bite - so I’ve resorted to old fashioned tube cement for now. Possibly Humbrol Liquid Poly or Revell Contacta may be better - what does everyone recommend?

M113 Sandbag armor

Ignore the colour, yet to paint and weather, but thought the crew of my ACAV deserved some better mine protection, who cares if the transmission breaks down quicker….

Ofc the "thumb up" vs "thumb down" to either spare or kill a gladiator is a modern myth; but in general - what do we know about Roman everyday gestures? Did they have an equivalent to the middle finger for example? Or even.. shaking hands? Etc. modern Italians use *a lot* of specific gestures.

New arena

Picked up my new Arena floor from the nice people at Warbases - pre-coloured and as you can see a perfect match for the freebie print. Will keep me going until the kickstarter arrives. No connection with the manufacturer except as a happy customer.

Best Weapons/Items For Scissor Gladiators To Use In Their 2nd Hand?

Scissor Gladiators were gladiators named after the wepaon they would use: the roman scissor which is weird hook arm looking thing but what weapon/item was the best for the other arm? Ive seen many depictions of scissors using short swords in their 2nd arm but are there any other option that they either actually used or would be smart to use in combination with the roman scissor?

Hadrian's wall milecastle

Made a milecastle (under repair) from XPS foam for a game of Pillage. Picts vs Romano British. Plenty of things I'd do differently but a fun project. The Roman buildings are from Warbases with plaster of Paris roof tiles from a Hirst Arts mold.

Working on buildings for Gangs of Rome

But mostly just for the joy of making. Kits are Sarissa Precision, flagstones and stairs are mostly scratchbuilt, and probably impractical, forge is from IGS

Alaterva

According to Wikipedia the Roman name of Cramond may have been "Alaterva", "Rumabo" or "Carumabo".

The rock on the foreshore further west is known as Eagle Rock -the eponymous (and now much worn down) eagle supposedly carved by the Roman garrison
