Caste-origin Madhesh Hindu groups

The social structure of the caste-origin Madhesi Hindu groups is complex, reflecting four varna groups with distinct hierarchical structure within them. These various cultural groups belong to four distinct language groups: Maithili, Bajika, Bhojpuri, and Awadhi. In 2001 the CBS recorded 43 caste-origin Hindu groups in the Madhesh.[13] Caste prejudice is far less prevalent in cities nowadays, although nothing has changed in rural regions. As a result of occupational changes, increased education, their own efforts to emulate the upper castes and consolidation of political power, urban Dalits in the Terai have moved up in status. The National Report says, "Over the last 15-20 years, six groups, namely kath baniya, Rajbhar, Dhanuk, Sudi, Kalwar and Teli have socially upgraded their status from the water unacceptable to the water acceptable community within the Tarai origin Hindu caste groups."[14][15]

Koiri-associated architecture, as represented by Janaki Mandir, reflects a blend of Mughal and Hindu architectural elements along with strong Mithila artistic influences. The temple, popularly known as the Nau Lakha Mandir, is famous for its three-storied structure, intricate carvings, lattice-style windows, and vibrant decorative patterns.

Built in a grand palace-like style, the temple stands as one of the most prominent architectural landmarks in Nepal’s Terai region. While often linked with Koiri/Mithila cultural traditions, it is generally understood as a fusion of multiple regional styles rather than a single strictly defined category.

Nepal's different ethnic and racial groups have historically had varying levels of representation in government, agriculture, business, civil service, judiciary, and military institutions.

During the reign of the Shah dynasty of Nepal (1768–2008), hilly upper castes such as the Bahuns and Kshetris held significant dominance in the civil service, judiciary, and high positions in the army.

According to some studies conducted in the Terai region (data prior to 2015), some Madhesi ethnic groups were found to be overrepresented in the civil service relative to their population proportions. For example, the Kushwaha ( Koiri ) community was reported to be overrepresented in the Government of Nepal civil service by about 3.2 times their national population proportion, placing them fourth in the country in terms of representation. Similarly, the Rajput community was found to be overrepresented by about 5.6 times their population proportion, while the Maithili Brahmins were found to be overrepresented by about 4.2 times. [ 34 ]

The Yadav community is one of the largest ethnic groups within the Madhesi community of Nepal. Their large population in some districts has also seen a significant increase in political representation in recent decades. A prominent figure from this community is Ram Baran Yadav , who served as the first President of Nepal from 23 July 2008 to 29 October 2015. [ 35 ]

Nepali is the national language of Nepal, while Maithili is the second most widely spoken language. The caste system prevalent in Hindu society was legally outlawed by the New Civil Code enacted in 1961. [ 36 ] [ 37 ] [ 38 ]
