Why are the different lineups called "Marks", other bands don't use it?

When I first got into Deep Purple I was confused about why they were using the word "mark" to differentiate the different lineups, because most bands have actually had lineup changes but they've never used this term before. Why does Deep Purple specifically use this word, did they make it up themselves or is this something that the fans started?

The Deep Purple Podcast

Most of you probably already know about this but I just discovered the Deep Purple podcast and it's amazing! These two guys are funny and it's very educational and entertaining and it's really scratching my itch to hear people talking about the band in a conversational way. Almost everything they say are the same things that I think so that's always good! Anyway, I highly recommend this podcast if you do not know about it already!

What classic rock bands did you discover only recently?

Do you have any classic rock bands that you just discovered only recently? By classic I mean 1970's or maybe even 1980's.

For me the latest example is Deep Purple. I know they are part of the original Holy Trinity (with Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath), but somehow I made it to age 53 before listening to any Deep Purple on purpose! Turns out I've always known a couple of their songs but they were not ones that I liked enough to want to listen to anything more by them. However now I am doing a deep dive and I started with the early stuff and worked my way up (not done yet though). They have some songs that I had no idea were this amazing (like Child in Time, which I believe is required listening for any rock music fan.)

Interviews from the Mark II era

I have been unable to find any video interviews of the band from the Mark II era. I know there's that backstage one from the Coverdale/Hughes era but that's the only one I have found and I'm really looking for earlier ones with the previous lineup. Were there really none or are they just not on YouTube?

Do you have a music buddy, or do you just talk about music with random strangers?

This might be a weird question but this actually a reason why I'm asking. One of my favorite things in life is to talk about music but I would rather talk about it with someone that I know rather than a bunch of random strangers on Reddit. Don't get me wrong, I love these music subreddits, but sometimes I feel a little lonely because I'm still just talking to strangers.

I struggle sometimes to find people to talk to on a regular basis, online I mean. When I'm obsessed about a band I like to find fans of the band and find someone that I can connect with and who likes to chat on a regular basis, and we can talk about that band for hours every day. I guess it's not so hard if the band is popular and they have a lot of fans but I tend to find these obscure bands or bands that don't have a lot of fans or bands that used to be huge decades ago and nobody cares about them anymore and that makes it hard to find people to talk to about them.

It just got me thinking, I wonder if anyone else out there is like me where they like to have a close online buddy that they can talk to regularly about whatever your favorite bands are.

I have 2 REALLY hot takes about the band

The first one is that I don't like most of their music. So you may ask, why do I consider myself a fan? It's mostly because of respect for the musicianship. They are all some of the best musicians that have ever existed. But I even heard Jon say once that they were not good at writing songs and I mostly agree with that with a few exceptions. I love 14 of their songs, that is it! (and yes Child In Time is one of them!)

My other really hot take is that I don't like Ian Gillan's voice that much! The weirdest thing is his voice is absolutely perfect on Child in Time but I don't love it in the other songs. In fact I really have a hard time with his voice in the middle years and the later years, it really changed and doesn't even sound like the same guy that sang Child in Time, it even sounds annoying to me (I'm VERY picky about voices).

So what I love the most about Deep Purple is them as people and their ability to play good with each other improvising and letting songs take on a life of their own. I love that they don't like to make three minute pop hits. To them it's all about music being deep and free-flowing. The guys are also so cool, especially Paicey who is my favorite member.

I'm pretty sure nobody else feels the same way I do but that's all right!

I love learning about the personalities of musicians and I've been watching a lot of documentaries and interviews with the band but I wanted to ask other fans this question. What were the guys like personally, like what was their personalities like?

So far I'm getting the idea that Ritchie was kind of a loner and a control freak and a jealous person. It seems that Ian Gillan was very likeable, funny, and charming and wouldn't let anybody treat him badly. Jon seemed like he had a good sense of humor and liked to be the spokesman for the band.  Paicey seems like the shy one, or at least the most quiet one but I don't know much about him since he rarely talks. I don't know much about Roger either, even though he does seem to talk a lot in interviews but I'm not picking up on any personality traits from him.

Has anybody ever met them and can attest to how their personalities are compared to how they come across in interviews?
