You sent 30k for her boda to come for the weekend... then she blocked you 🫠

We know the story. You met at a Bar in Bugolobi, maybe at a wedding, maybe through a friend. The vibes were right. She said she's free this weekend. You offered to send transport : 20k, 30k, 50k for boda from wherever she is.

"Send, I am on my way."

You send. Then... silence.

"Network is bad." "My phone died." "My boda got a puncture."

Two hours later. Blocked. Number not reachable. That 30k is gone. No weekend vibe. No explanation. Just you staring at your phone like 😐

Or the flip side, you are the one who was supposed to go somewhere. Someone sent you transport, but something came up. You didn't refund. They felt played. Trust broken.

This is Uganda. We send money on faith. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it's a lesson.

TumaFare is that lesson-proof button.

Here is how it could have gone differently:

  • You create a "Send transport" on HOLD on TumaFare
  • You send 30k via Mobile Money, it's locked, not sent to her phone yet
  • She gets a message: "Transport is secured. Confirm you are on the way."
  • She taps "I'm on my way" - money is reserved
  • She arrives — you confirm - money releases to her
  • If she lied or ghosts? You cancel - money refunds to you instantly

No more stories. No more blocking. No more "my boda had a puncture" for 4 hours.

We are building this for all of us:

  • Sending fare to a boda
  • Paying for a service before it's done
  • Booking a mama fua or electrician
  • Even sending transport for that weekend visit 💀

Try it: tumafare.com Tell us what you think. We are Ugandans building for Ugandans. We want to fix this "send money and pray" culture.

No more chewed transport money. No more blocked numbers. Just trust, secured.

TL;DR: Built TumaFare - for transport money, and yes, even transport for weekend visits. Money only moves when the person shows up. Try it, roast it, help us make it better.

How common is "eating transport money" in Kenya? Because I feel like it's a whole cultural institution and we just built tech to end it.

Let's have this conversation properly.

Dating fare in East Africa - specifically Uganda and Kenya - is a minefield that nobody talks about openly. Here's the situation as I see it:

(the person sending fare)
You want to see someone. They need transport money to get to you. You send it. You have zero guarantee they'll come. If they don't, you've lost money AND been rejected simultaneously. Double loss.

(the person receiving fare)
You're being asked to travel to someone, which costs real money. If you go and they're not who they said they were — or the vibe is off and you need to leave, you're out of pocket for going. And asking for the fare back is awkward. If they "forget" to pay you back, you're out of pocket for nothing.

Neither side is fully protected. And the result? A broken system where:
- Some people refuse to send fare at all and miss genuine connections
- Some people send fare and get ghosted
- Some people travel hoping to get reimbursed and don't
- Everyone ends up more guarded and less trusting

We built TumaFare specifically for this. It's fare escrow, money is locked in the middle, only releases when both parties are satisfied (person arrives + sender approves).

The cultural question I'm curious about though:

  1. Is sending fare before a date/visit expected or is it a favour?
  2. When someone eats the fare, do you think it's malicious or just "the game"?
  3. Would you use an escrow system for this - or does bringing an app into it feel too transactional?
  4. Men: would you feel more comfortable sending fare if you knew you'd get a refund if she doesn't show?
  5. Ladies: would you feel better about visiting someone if your transport was guaranteed upfront?

Genuine debate welcome. App is at tumafare.com if you want to try it either way.

I sent someone fare money. They texted "arrived safely" from their bed 40km away. So I built an escrow app.

I sent someone fare money. They texted "arrived safely" from their bed 40km away. So I built an escrow app.

This isn't a joke post. Last year I sent a friend 5,000 KES to cover their boda ride to a meeting. Two hours later I got: "arrived safely, will be there soon." I was already at the venue watching the door.

I called. No answer. Called again. "Almost there." Meeting time came and went. They never showed. That evening: "sorry something came up" and the money was clearly gone.

Third time this had happened with different people.

So instead of cutting off half my contacts, I built an escrow transport money app, a transport money escrow app for this exact problem.

How it works:
- You send fare → locked in escrow (not sent yet)
- They get an SMS with a claim link
- OTP verification (only the right person can claim it)
- They travel, confirm arrival (2-step, can't fake it)
- You approve → money hits their Mobile Money instantly
- No show? → automatic full refund after timer

Works on MTN, Airtel, M-PESA. Just a link.
