I never realized the significance of Frodo making Sméagol swear on the precious…
"The Ring is treacherous. It will hold you to your word."
Is this both in the books and the film?
Not sure why I have only just clued in now, but this makes way more sense as to why gollem / Sméagol is loyal to Sam and Frodo.
He is then betrayed by them at the waterfall pool, and this is when he turns on them.
To me it never made sense that he would just casually take them to where they wanted to go and not have a chance to take the ring for himself. Even 2 Vs 1.
