How does one choose their occupation?

Hi everyone,

So recently I have started to get into reading/listening to the Bhagvad Gita. After chapter 3, it has become pretty clear that one of the central themes is to understand that the fruits of our actions cannot be the motivating factor of our actions.

For example, making a lot of money, shouldn’t be the reason I do the job I do. However, I must do the job regardless.

But my question is then, how does one determine what job they should do?

Something like traits or skills aren’t a great determinant, because I am only good at what I practice. And there are probably like 50 different career options where I have the required skills.

Just for clarification, I am using job as an example to understand this concept, I already have a job / career.

I am a former vegetarian that has now started eating meat, but I need help

For example, when I eat wings, I don’t know what part of the chicken is eatable and which part is like bone and cartilage, that you aren’t supposed to eat.

I want to ask questions to a subreddit on what parts of the meat I can and can’t eat, but what subreddit can I ask that question on?

Any places to watch fireworks from your car?

Hey y’all!

So for context, every year my family and I go to the Woodbridge fireworks, but it’s always super packed, parking is a nightmare, and then we have to walk to the park, which is a bit tough for the older members of my family

Does anyone know of any good spots, maybe somewhere with a higher elevation, where you can watch fireworks comfortably from your car?

I’d prefer somewhere in Middlesex County, but I’m willing to drive anywhere in Jersey if it’s worth it.

Thanks in advance!

Does everyone have Indian customization items for their avatar?

I am Indian, but I don’t live in India, so I have no clue how Reddit knows I am Indian lol

Or does everyone by default have Indian items for customizing their avatars

I Work at The Office (or at Least *An* Office)

I (23M) recently graduated college and started working at a small, somewhat irrelevant company in the middle of New Jersey.

I grew up watching The Office, but I never fully appreciated just how accurate its portrayal of office life actually is. After I stared working I realized that I am kind of living in my own version of The Office.

First, our regional CEO is basically Michael Scott reborn. (I'll take your suggestions for Michael "Name")

This man unironically uses fidget spinners during important meetings. He sometimes starts spinning in his chair or randomly gets up, and starts to pace around the room, bouncing off the walls. Basically completely derailing the energy of a meeting for a minute or two. And somehow it's not obnoxious—it just has pure Michael Scott energy.

I had my graduation ceremony last month, and when he found out, he told everyone in the office. He was more excited than I was. It reminded me of the episode where Pam had the art show and Michael is genuinely proud of her. That's exactly how it felt. He wasn't celebrating because it benefited the company; dude was genuinely happy and excited for me.

Second, the people in the office are surprisingly similar to Angela, Phyllis, and Stanley, etc.

Most of them are nice, but they're focused on their own work and couldn't care less what's happening around them unless you're directly talking to them. Like they aren't enthusiastic coming to work everyday. They are kind of just there to exist, work, and go home. We even have an Angela-type employee: very religious, doesn't always get along with everyone, and can come across as a bit cold. Then, out of nowhere, she'll be incredibly friendly and supportive for no apparent reason.

And yes—we have a Dwight!!

He's an Indian project manager (relax, I am Indian too) who takes his job extremely seriously. To be fair, he's excellent at what he does, but sometimes the intensity reaches Dwight Schrute levels. You half expect him to have a beet farm somewhere in Central Jersey.

Also, the corporate culture is very similar. We have a lot of meetings in the conference room that are pretty much useless. We meet about ethics or something once a month, but it has absolutely ZERO impact. No one changes their behavior, no one cares.

I like to think I'm Jim, but since I'm the young guy in the office, I am probably closer to Ryan. Then again, I'm posting this on the internet for strangers to read, so maybe I'm Creed.

Honestly, the whole experience has been wonderful.

It's like the universe took a show I've loved for years and quietly recreated it around me. Every day there are little moments that remind me of an episode. For the first time in my life, I genuinely enjoy waking up and going to the office.

Life is good.

How many people reach out to you via LinkedIn to network or ask for guidance?

Hey guys, I’m a recent grad with a bachelors of science in Finance from a decent, but non-target school.

I graduated in December with the end of the fall semester, and had three job letters by January 15th. I had no prior relevant internship experience, but I was a supervisor for a security company.

A big part of my job application was networking through LinkedIn. I was spamming people with connection requests and messages. There were some days that I would send out maybe 100 connection request, and every single person who accepted would get a personalized message, asking for guidance and sometimes referral.

I expected everybody to do the same. But now that I am a financial analyst, I never get connection requests or emails from current students. Heck my company is hiring, and the HR people know me really well. If I refer someone, they are more than likely to get a job, but no one reaches out.

Because of this, I was curious, is it just because I work at a smaller firm? Do you guys get a lot of LinkedIn invites and requests?

Micheal has a likable personality?!?

I’ve heard this theory before that Michael intentionally acts “annoying” because it helps the office bond together.

He constantly craves attention, inserts himself where he doesn’t belong, and pushes jokes just a little too far. In a weird way, he becomes a common problem everyone unites around.

But what’s interesting is that people actually seem to genuinely like Michael when he isn’t acting as their boss.

I’m rewatching the show for the first time in a while, and in Season 4 — when Michael is working the second job — everyone invites him out and enjoys being around him. He comes across less like an obnoxious manager and more like a charismatic, funny coworker.

It almost feels like the “annoying Michael” persona is amplified by the pressure of leadership and his desperate need to be liked as a boss.
