Monster Slayers! is on a special sale for October!

Hey there! If you ever wanted to play Troika in a more pure swords-and-sorcery fantasy setting, this is a supplement designed to make that fun and easy to jump right into. Perfect for going on more traditional combat-oriented campaigns and dungeon delves. No two characters will be quite alike, as each race has many options to make them unique, and many classes have subtle ways that allow you to play just the character you want - with added rules to help make relatively balanced freestyle options in line with everything else.

Rather than work purely on rolling random backgrounds like traditional troika, now you are given choices of mixing and matching 20 races along with 28 classes, or, choose from 12 unique characters, like the Tricksome Fairy, or Ancient Forgotten War machine, or Living Armour!

I put it on sale for this whole month, so, if you were ever interested in giving it a try and just hadn't pulled the trigger, now's the time!

You can find it here

Made some tokens for play

I'm making printable token sheets for each faction, so I made these as a test!

I'm trying to go really low cost and small effort, so each of these is hand cut with scissors, then backed by an adhesive furniture pad, and then the printout is sealed with a thin veneer of white glue.

Just finished Tales of Vesperia - My Thoughts

In my time playing this series, I've played Symphonia, Symphonia 2, Legendia, Abyss, Vesperia, Graces f, Xillia, Xillia 2, And Berseria.

I've also played a bit of a few others, but didn't complete them yet.

Overall, I've found Vesperia to be the most straightforward, and least annoying of all Tales of Games played so far.

  • The story was good throughout without any lagging points, and pretty damn easy to keep track of.
  • The characters, especially the MC, were pretty fun. I liked Yuri, Estelle, Judy, and Rita best.
  • It was awesome having an actual vigilante hero for once that actually killed bad people who the law was protecting?? More please??
  • The enemies never seemed especially cheap
  • None of the dungeons fell to the most annoying time sink traps
  • The final dungeon was, for the most part, VERY LINEAR (series first, omg?)
  • The rivalry with Flynn was great, and the point of view of Duke was very understandable

However, there is still some negatives that go along with this:

  • The "big twists" that usually punctuate Tales of game plots felt very weak in comparison to others.
  • The the NPCs of this game were very unmemorable - some outright just dissapeared while hinting they would be more involved?
  • Zagi is probably the worst party antagonizer. Tales of does like to start the game with crazy bastards bosses - but Agria was far better an example in Xillia. He just shows up pretty much out of nowhere, and has zero relevance.
  • Not one, but TWO annoying child characters. Please, Anise, save me from this.
  • Repede, I love you, and you were in my party for the final battle - but having a dog party member cuts down on a lot of party dynamics.

In short - a solid meal, but lacking in spice.

Now that that's out of the way, I'm looking forward to playing the Phantasia, Rebirth, Zestiria (I really should have played this first before Berseria), and Arise.

Where would I slot this one in terms of awesome tales of games... Hard to Pick. I honestly have not played a tales of game I haven't loved. Graces is my fav, but Xillia, Symphonia, Abyss, Berseria - All 5 stars. So, I suppose I'd put this one with Xillia 2, Symphonia 2, and give it 4 stars. Legendia, I love you, but you get 3.5 stars - purely because you still had the 2d movement, totally useless puzzle rooms, and an unvoiced half the game - but visually, musically, and cheesyness, you were beautiful.

Your Favourite Gig Quotes!

I decided to play through Soul Nomad & The World Eaters again, since I never got a chance to play through Demon Path, and then I lost my save. God, this game brings me so much joy just from Gig utterly roasting everyone within earshot. Well, now that I've gone through the main game and Demon Path, I wanted to see what quotes you guys really remember and love from the game. Mine is the above - the scene is basically Shauna acting like Team Mom: making the ousted queen brush her teeth, while trying to make Gestahl go to bed properly, while her sister Trish wanders into the room looking lost, and then Galahad is just babbling nonsense, and finally Kanan is just laughing at the madness from the sidelines, finally Gig just quips: "Is this the center of a brutal, bloodthirsty regime, or a daycare?"

There's no shortage of amazing Gig quotes though - what is your favourite moment?

Legend of Legacy - Any tips before I start?

Just picked this up. I adored Alliance Alive, so I have always been curious about the flawed cousin, Legend of Legacy.

Any tips that will help me get started, or something to watch out for?

Just finished the series for the first time!

... Aaaand now I'm going to have a good cry ( ;w;) BWUH HUH HHUHHHHhhhh....

But, while I'm here, I wanted to share my thoughts on the series! I think the best way to sum up this show and others like it in a few words is "Lore Cartoon" or maybe "Cartoon with Hidden Depths" ? Essentially, a slice of life cartoon that slowly starts to introduce bigger dramatic moments while sprinkling mysteries throughout. Gravity Falls, Duck Tales, Star vs The Forces of Evil, The Owl House. (Am I missing any?)

I feel like Amphibia took the longest to get ramped up, but in many ways, I really appreciate what it did different. 1) It was always REALLY funny. Like, I was laughing at least a little pretty much at every episode. 2) No relationship stuff, it was all about a friendship. Not that I don't like that sort of thing, but it's fresh that this one didn't have a love subplot that made things too melodramatic. 3) We really got to take our time explore the world and all it's highs and lows, and it was really imaginative!

Overall, I think they executed this show really really well, and I'm glad I finally got to it.

While I'm thinking about it, this setting would make for a great TTRPG. And on that note, man, I wish this show had come out in the era of tie-in games - because then we might have gotten an Amphibia RPG, which would have been SICK.

Excellent timing on my part, too - looks like that miniseries is planned to release right around my birthday this year! How auspicious.

Anyway, what were your feels when you finished the series? Do you like to rewatch? You ever make any fan art or fanfiction for the show, out of love?

What's your favourite fan art for the series?

I've found that while the body of work of Alice in Wonderland is much smaller, but gets quite a lot of fan art, but The Oz series tends to get very limited amounts of fan art.

I was doing a little mini project for myself where I was compiling all the first 14 books into markdown so I could output them to a custom epub, and was looking for a cover image I wanted, and was surprised at how hard it was to find fan art I could use. The above is what I eventually settled on (artist, yellowpaint.)

What's your favourite found fanart?

Remnants by K.A. Applegate - my Thoughts as I read them. Pt 2 Books 5-8

First post here: Remnants! My thoughts on the books as I read them - Entry 1: Books 1 through 4 : r/Animorphs

05 - Mutation - Dude, gross... That cover, and the opening chapter. We open with some grotesque imagery of basically a human being being turned into a ziploc bag, and a brand new character, Kubrick! He seems to exist merely as a pain in the ass. And very shortly, his father becomes the new Log they have to carry around - because that's what the story needed. Also, we get a mention of 'Tate' on the ship. If she was mentioned previous to this book, I do not remember, but apparently she was mentioned as having taken a side in Book 3 at least. Look, I get it - you want to have a pool of people you can call up to replace dead cast members - but you really could have set this up better. At least MENTION the gaggle of anonymous people who have thus far remained silent in all the goings on. Don't just let them magically a-fucking-ppear out of the narrative of "they were below decks this whole time" like geez! I have written a really lazy DND campaign with an anonymous gaggle of people to create new party members from that has more narrative significance than these people. Anyway, yes, the story. Half the book is a mishmash of exploration in the underbelly of the ship and the rest of the cast trying to not drown - and then the other half is a madcap dash through a warzone where nothing sticks around long enough to have an impact and the stakes could not be less clear. I think it's this book that made me really understand why Animorphs is such a better series. Remnants is like a nightmare - a fever dream. And that would be compelling if it had some consistentcy. And Animorphs was, Helmacrons and all, still 10x more easy to follow and enjoy than this. Book 3 - Them - was perfect. The environment was stable. The stakes, clear. The horrors - plentiful. The politics - tolerable. This book is just... Dull, and then it shifts into a madcap rush. There's a big not-fight, and the book ends very suddenly, with Billy and MOTHER basically coping with their shared drama in a dive bar while at the same time trying to kill each other off screen. Billy gets a gold-star for his performance in this book.

06 - Breakdown - Damn is that what Yago looks like? (Looking at him on the cover) What a dweeb! Can you imagine getting bullied by a glorified Johnathan Taylor Thomas? As an adult?? His own internal monologues and actions in the books make him seem like a very adult and Machiavellian bastard, but if you were to see his actions from the outside he would just seem like a cowardly and annoying brat, barely any better than D-Caf. It has become clear to me that they packed way too many kids on this last gasp of Earth. Anyway, huge changes! We get new humans (again), setting up future conflicts (finally), and even a look into Mother herself! Even finally being told why the hell Kubrick was turned into a ziploc bag! But in the end this ends up being another big show down between the denizens of the ship, this time between the humans (With Yago being Mother's puppet) and the Blue Meanies (who basicaly lose a bunch of allies because of stupid). Mother no longer wants to be fixed - she has a perfect set of content creation machines now (humans) and she wants to mold them into becoming the new shipwrights (her original creators). But finally... FINALLY. Two huge plot points that have been threatening to happen finally happen. The group SPLITS UP on ideoligical grounds, and the BABY's motivation and origin is partially revealed (He wants to become a shipwright and control Mother). Not that it makes any sense, but, progress is progress! Now that we have clear allies, and clear villains, and clearish motivations on all sides (and no pointless ocean diversions) - will we FINALLY get a real story? Only time will tell!

07 - Isolation - Well, this book certainly went into overdrive. Yago is suddenly becoming a religious figure nutjob. There's a huge battle, again, but this one feels earned! Strangely, everything feels like it's coming to a climax, for real! We know what the baby is, what it wants, what it can do, and the stakes are high as everyone races for 'The Bridge'. Which is strange because (checks notes) THERE'S A LOT OF BOOKS LEFT. Tate gets a spotlight in this book, constantly trying to connect with Tamara and reach her. But, Tamara feels like an empty shell without the baby telling her what to do, so, we get some stockholm syndrome here. Sadly, most of the cast feels entirely superfluous, but Roger Dodger actually gets a moment to shine. When was he introduced... like, book 3? That took a while. But, I will admit, this book is the best book SINCE book 3. And Mo continues to be best boy as he has a super-powered showdown against Tamara while Billy tries to figure out his powers in time to keep the baby from reclaiming the ship. Only just now do I realize that there is a bit of overlap between the baby and billy. The baby regains it's powers by "absorbing" the Blue Meanies - but this is a power Billy also demonstrated when he took his father's life. Interesting. I'll have to keep that in mind. And now, there's a big finish where everything gets wrapped up in a neat little bow with Billy fully in control... So... What the hell is the rest of the series about??

08 - Mother May I - This almost feels like the start of a new book series. 3 months have passed, so now we get to see how everyone is getting along. The initial pages make it very clear that pretty much each of them is an island unto themselves, though there is the barest hint that there might be something between Jobs and Violet - and even that is damaged by the big question the book (via Jobs) poses: If the Earth is habitable, should we go back to it? And, what if somehow people survived? Violet makes a great point that whatever remnants of humanity remain on Earth now, they'd practically be a different species by now. And, go back for what? They have a home now already. In any event, a few potential things for conflict are brought up. Yago is now in full cult leader now - but rather than trying to be a cult for the humans, he is actually targeting the Children (blue meanies). And one of them gives Yago a flechette gun - which comes in handy when the other meanies come to arrest him for blasphemy. I didn't mention it, but there is an uneasy peace between the three races known as The Big Compromise. And, changing the ships course would be violating it. Billy agrees to do so, on the condition that the one blind spot of the ship is investigated by Jobs. While jobs and company are investigating, 2Face emotionally manipulates Billy to change course while Jobs is away. Meanwhile, Jobs and the others find some of the missing crew members - one of whom is known as Amelia - and she is scary. She basically goes full Testuo in a sequence so grotesque the book refuses to even describe it. We get hints that there are two other "evolved Humans" with her, and also hints that more of the missing passengers might turn up soon. Well, now I guess I know what makes up the rest of the series. I am intrigued! This feels like an interesting turn that won't stagnate. We shall see.

When do you write most of the time?

For example, I usually write during my lunch break. But, when do you do most of your writing? I'm curious.

Any good resources to set up a group for tabletop roleplaying?

Most of my friends aren't really into playing TTRPGs, which is sucky because I really like GMing. I was wondering if anyone knows of a good resource to use to help facilitate assembling some interested players? I could tolerate doing it purely online, though I'd like to run something in-person ideally.

I love how simple, intuitive, and adaptable Troika! is as an OSR system. But a lot of people I have played with didn't really vibe with the science-fantasy theming. Not only that, but a lot of people enjoy combat when they play, and the 36 backgrounds of Troika! can be very ill-suited from that. That got me thinking about what people enjoy. I tinkered around a lot with different concepts, and eventually landed on something I feel takes Troika! to the next level and makes it much better to do traditional dungeon crawls with in a pure swords and sorcery fantasy setting.

Basically, you pick a Race, Class, and Background Motivation, add them together, and get a character!

There's 20 Races, 28 Classes, as well as 12 Unique Characters that function more like traditional Troika! backgrounds.

On top of that, I included lots of extra tools.

  • Price lists for all standard equipment and training
  • 23 Magic items
  • Rules for stat conversion from Dungeons and Dragons
  • Rules for balancing encounters
  • Optional House rules for making Troika! easier to play and understand, and more combat friendly (clarifying some base game ambiguities)

Lastly, I also include an outline for a campaign called "Anything You Can Do", designed to be a globe-trotting adventure to save the world from a seemingly invincible threat.

All in all, it's over 90 pages! And art by Cogitohazard (@cogitohazard.bsky.social) — Bluesky

I put a lot of love and care into this for several months, making every single race and class feel fun and unique and on a pretty similar power level to each other. Let me know what you think!
