Flock vs Static Grass for Wargaming Bases?

Flock vs Static Grass for Wargaming Bases?

I posted a thread the other week asking for feedback on my flocking. The feedback was positive, but I was struggling to get the effect I wanted. Which, summed up in one picture looks like this:

https://preview.redd.it/7ifjrrklkg4h1.png?width=900&format=png&auto=webp&s=5ae9fb0e30407de552c15087387295646f67eb8d

I'm using Javis flock and finding that both watered down PVA glue and matte varnish discolour and darken this flock. I've run a few tests and can see how each impacts the flock. I've since learned that Javis flock isn't colourfast.

This had led me to look at other options. I know things like Woodland Scenics flock is more foam based and more colourfast. Which should undo my problem - but it's also incredibly expensive and not super readily available near me. The same would go for the stuff from Geek Gaming Scenics, but I'm 99% sure that the company doesn't really exist any more as nothing ever seems to get restocked.

So in my hunting for flocks, it's become pretty clear that static grass has more-or-less replaced flock for grassland purposes. When I started wargaming as a kid in the late 90s, it was all flock all the time and so there's been a pretty big shift since then which isn't surprising.

My issue is, however, that I feel like static grass looks incredibly plasticy. I don't like how it looks at all, it seems too tall for most wargaming purposes. 4mm static grass is a whopping 22cm at 32mm wargaming scale, even larger at 28mm.

Am I wrong in this? What should I be using to achieve an effect that is similar to my reference image?

How to improve my flocking

I'm working on some base designs for an upcoming army project. I was inspired by areas of the Peak District, mainly Stanage Edge with it's mix of rocks, mud and scruby grass. And then I've thrown some rust metal in for good measure.

The issue I'm having, and why I'm posting here instead of a painting forum, is that my flock looks kinda bad. It's come out very flat and dull and I'd like it to pop a bit more (bare in mind it's slightly more dull in person!) There's a few things it could be:

- The flock simply isn't the right colour, I'm using most Javis Rough Pasture with a some bits of Javis Moorland Mixture in the darker areas

- I didn't use enough flock, there's a layer of Stirland Mud texture paint underneath that I thought would give it a realistic vibe if it showed through so I did more of a dusting application.

- I sealed it with PVA and water and maybe the sawdust flock didn't like the water

- Might be a general colour scheme issue as a lot of the elements are similar values

Anyway, those are my theories, would love some feedback from those more knowledgeable than I!

Is Oldhammer just aesthetics? Or is there something more than creates the Oldhammer feel?

I love Oldhammer, it's just everything I loved about Warhammer when I first got into it. I've been thinking recently about whether there were any books that captured the Oldhammer40K vibe.

The obvious ones are the Ian Watson books and maybe the first Space Wolves book. But that got me thinking about the things that make Oldhammer feel different, and not just look different. The visual differences are obvious, but what is it about the "lore" of older editions that makes them feel different? Does it feel different at all? Is it just nostalgia?

Edit: Obviously there's the rules too - but I think that goes without saying, but just thought I'd clarify!

Show me your Non-Mars bases

Playing around with the idea of basing my ad mech in some kind of forest scheme instead of the traditional Mars.

I'm a big fan of contrasting bases and the idea of a red model on an orange base goes very much against that - plus I'm a sucker for the verdant green bases of Oldhammer.

I'm sure there are plenty of people out there who have gone with something other than Mars for their basing schemes. I'd love to see them!

I have some Birthday cash left after buying an airbrush and have been thinking Of picking up the three vehicle box, as it's a pretty good deal from FLGSs in terms of cost per vehicle.

The thing that makes me pause, however, is the actual vehicles themselves. I already have a Dunecrawler (and while I love the model, idk if I need more than one), I'd like a Dunerider for shuttling around melee guys in 11th, and while I don't really like the laser chickens aesthetically, I understand they're useful - but people don't tend to run just one of them.

The value is great, but I'm not sure it's a particularly useful combination of stuff? Just me? What do people think?

Know 1997 is around the early cutoff for Midhammer, but seemed better for here than Oldhammer - they can be a bit particular about what gets posted. Cool video, love Ed's stuff (not my video, to be clear)
