PSA: New Players

No one outside of shop owners, content creators and the random lucky ganger with an early pre-order arrival has played N26 yet. Most of us haven't even seen all the rules yet and we don't know what is going to be in the new journals.

We don't know what is going to be good, or how to build "the best" list and, to be honest, even if we did that isn't the point of Necromunda. And, importantly, we don't know what gang you personally are going to enjoy playing.

Please stop asking.

Go with what looks cool. What sounds fun. Worry about the other stuff later.

Edit: Some people seem to think that I'm insisting no one asks questions or should already know all of this.

I am not.

I am not having a go at people,

I am not making fun of people.

I am basically just pointing out that no one has the answer to these questions just yet. If you are looking to get into Necromunda, just buy the gangs that appeal to you from a lore and aesthetic perspective. Do not buy a gang on how "good" they are or aren't, because that entirely misses the point. You're creating a gang of weird little underhive goblins, not a super optimised military squad.

Already with this BS.

(Not my video.)

Disappointed in GW for this. They didn't include special skills in the core rules implying a simplified and more old school style game. I liked that. It made sense and fixed a lot of my complaint about N23 where gangs felt more like 40K factions.

But now, we're basically instantly going back into book bloat and they're giving us what we already had (chem alchemy). And the game isn't even out yet. This should have just been in the core gang books if this was the plan all along.

So "you only need the gang books" is obviously a lie. You now are actually going to need MORE books. Core rules, gang books and journals.

I gave GW the benefit of the doubt on this one. They let me down. (Insert "first time?" meme here.)

Can we chill. Deep breaths everyone.

Comment after comments that basically follows this logic

"Thing has changed. That means thing is now bad based on me applying that rule to the N23 rules and design philosophy!"

Absolute waste of everyone's time. They are clearly going for something a bit different for the new version, something a bit more like N95 but with easier to parse rules.

Looking at any stat, or special rule, or weapons profle and then complaining about it without applying it to the context of the new core rules, which none one here has read yet, is pointless. But this is also somehow the most common logical thread being used.

Can we chill for a moment. Wait until we can actually get access to the core rules which seem pretty decent, and of you still don't like the game, fine.

But let's be better than r/Helldivers and not play the patch notes.

My Thoughts On the Confirmed Rule Changes as Regular Player

I know nobody asked, but I thought it'd be a good way of kicking off conversation on the confirmed rules if I shared my thoughts as someone who has played Necromunda as my only GW game (until quite recently). It also helps me work out my thoughts thus far.

So here we go. I'll be giving each one a "Like, Dislike, Unsure" score.

Gangers get skills and specialisms - Like

It currently takes forever for standard gangers to be able to do anything more, in my experience gangers and juves basically never get meaningfully upgraded unless you're playing every week for a year and so giving the gangers more options as to what they can do is great - though hopefully they're still objectively weaker skill wise than Champions and Leaders. Also shrinks the gap between gangers and champions which is a good thing as gangs were often very top heavy with the majority of gangers and stuff basically just being there to take up space.

Removed limits on Brutes and Hangers On - Like

Never really made sense that you could afford a unit but they wouldn't take your money if you didn't have enough rep. This is the Underhive, is money really not enough? And in general I'm very pro adding options and choices when it comes to gang building.

Lowering weapon restrictions for Gangers and up - Like

As long we have ways if preventing overt spam then this is again just more options for building your gang without arbitrary restrictions - the "on creation special weapons ganger" was always way more complicated than it needed to be and this removes that.

Removed limits on who can do post actions - Like

Again prevents champs and leaders being the be all and end all of your gang and lowers the focus on them. I'd assume it's all still stats based and so you're still going to want to focus on your higher ranked guys anyway. Again, it's more options and I like more options.

Close combat is now initiative based and reaction attacks are limited - Like

Close combat needed changing and this prevents the meta being "have a really strong melee guy that no one can do anything about".

Removed firepower dice on majority of weaponry - Unsure

I enjoy the chaos of Necromunda and I dislike removal of that chaos. Sure your standard lasgun didn't really get impacted much by firepower dice considering you had an auto-reload anyway, but I'm not sure about this one. It could have basically no impact. It might make shooting less interesting.

Simplifying bottle checks - Like

Was always the most needlessly complicated part of the game and basing it on the leader means the gang is a bit more flavourful in terms of how brave it is.

Base saves on character profiles - Dislike

Unless every ganger has a base 6+ then this means that saves have a floor at creation which removes options. I'd always rather have the option to create a glass cannon with great shooting, a las cannon and no armour than not have that option. Yes these will be modifiable, but I'd rather not have any part of it fixed that isn't intrinsic to the unit as a living thing.

Campaign cards - Unsure

Honestly, I don't really care about official GW campaigns for anything. I'd be unlikely to use these but I won't complain that they exist.

I'm happy to be pretty happy with the majority of these changes, which is a pleasant surprise. We'll have to see what the full version brings.

What is it that people don't like about the production on the new Boundaries album?

As title.

Seen a lot people complain about production on various websites but I've had absolutely no issues with clarity or punch or it being too harsh.

Listening to Spotify on my phone with Sony XM5 Earbuds.

If this is bad production idk what some people would think of early Bleeding Through albums or the second The Contortionist album.

Genuinely confused. So please help me understand.

Edit: appreciate y'all who shared what they didn't like about it. I can't say I agree it's as bad as people make out but it's good to understand different points of view.

Those in here accusing me of being a "glazer" or "running defense" can get fucked though. Pathetic thing to do when discussing music. This sub would be better off without you.

Saves To Be Included On Datasheets?

So the recent Q&A said that one of the things they've streamlined is that they're included the save values on each character/ganger profile.

My question is how is that meant to work with equipment? As it stands no one gets a save without buying armour unless they're given armour at creation.

This absolutely feels like the "removing options" thing I was worried about. I don't necessarily want my gangers save to be fixed in any way shape or form. If I want to build a gang of glass cannons I should be able to do that.

Why does Warhammer YouTube have such a slop problem?

Is this just a Warhammer problem or is it just that I notice it more here because I consume a bunch of 40K content?

Even some otherwise quality hobby content is using very obvious AI for thumbnails and it cheapens the whole thing.

Finally started painting my Sentry Turrets

1 down (and a crate and console) 3 to go! Really hope these make it to the new edition because they're the kind of chaos that Necromunda thrives on.

Skitarii Vanguard - test model for Mars Ad Mech army

I recently completed this test model for my Ad Mech army.

There are definitely some things I struggled with.

The cloak looks super flat, but there's no super obvious places to add shadow. The sand coloured paints remain a nightmare to work with and I couldn't get them on smoothly no matter what I did.

Ended up adding too much wash and not wicking it away which created some big goopy messes.

Generally looking for feedback, I'm overall happy with the model (despite having to do some repairs before taking photos after dropping a tray of paint in it's head!) but I know I can do a better job - especially with the robes. And I'd like it to pop a bit more, they're such busy models it's hard to get that big hit of contrast.

I have also realised I missed some spots on top of details like the skull and some of the lenses.

My First Skitarii - Thoughts and Questions

So I've finished my test model (Skitarii Vanguard) for my Ad Mech army. I'm pretty happy with how it's turned up but there are some things I'm not happy with and I know could be better.

Some notes:

- My biggest tip to anyone making this is not to drop a tray full of paint on it just before you're planning to take photos of it meaning you have to spend time gluing fiddly bits back on and get him back in the base which is why he's more bent over than normal

(The actual biggest tip is don't glue the legs on before painting)

- This guy has a grenade because I completely melted his arm when building, that's why he's my test guy

- The base was made separately as part of a separate test for this army

- The green glow is from my hobby mat, it's not some subtle OSL

Things I think could be better and I struggled with:

- The robe, inside and out, it's super flat and doesn't pop, it feels like there should be more shadows and highlights but I don't know where you'd actually put them - I used a wash here and I think it was a mistake and layering might be the better call

-I also have no idea how people get the divider between the red and the lining so neat

- The inside of the robe was a pain because for the life of me I can't get a single sand colour to go on smooth, they're either dry and streaky or basically water and streaky, same issue with washes

- The power coil could pop more, this is mainly due to my poor precision skills, needs highlighting but I just ended up putting paint where it shouldn't be

- Felt like the painting order was hard to work out on this one

- I put too much wash on and didn't clean it up as I went, resulting in a few goopy messes in tight areas I couldn't get rid of

Any tips or insights on the above or anything else I could improve, would love to hear.

So is it a new edition or not?

The video referred to it as a "Edition Reset" and "New Edition" during the preview, but also all the old models still work.

So what is it?

iPod Gen 7 HDD has failed - what is the "best" option?

My beloved Classic 7 160gb currently has over 16K relocations, safe to say the HDD is dead.

I've been trying to work out what my next steps are. I have two options as far as I can see (3 technically):

  1. Repair the iPod with an SD mod and a new battery for good measure (~£100 with the SD cards thrown in) - I have never done anything like that before, though
  2. Have some else do it for me (I found a quote for £200)
  3. Just buy something else (£???)

I've had iPods since the Mini, with the Gen7 being my 3rd and I've not had a non-Apple audio player since that first Mini.

I do enjoy the device, but don't love it so much that I wouldn't move to something better if it was easier to just buy new and then not have to deal with all the DIY stuff. I had just moved to Rockbox on the iPod before it died, which was fun but I don't absolutely need that going forward. To be honest, it might have been the stress of installing Rockbox that finally finished it off

If I was to upgrade the iPod with an SD mod, I'd look to start at around 256GB with a quad board, so if I were buying new, I'd want around that much storage. Don't need bluetooth, don't care about apps or anything. I just want a good DAC, but a fun interface goes a long way too.

And obviously, if buying new I'd need it to make sense financially in comparison to repairing/having it repaired for me.

Anyone have any ideas or recommendations?

Flock vs Static Grass for Wargaming Bases?

I posted a thread the other week asking for feedback on my flocking. The feedback was positive, but I was struggling to get the effect I wanted. Which, summed up in one picture looks like this:

https://preview.redd.it/7ifjrrklkg4h1.png?width=900&format=png&auto=webp&s=5ae9fb0e30407de552c15087387295646f67eb8d

I'm using Javis flock and finding that both watered down PVA glue and matte varnish discolour and darken this flock. I've run a few tests and can see how each impacts the flock. I've since learned that Javis flock isn't colourfast.

This had led me to look at other options. I know things like Woodland Scenics flock is more foam based and more colourfast. Which should undo my problem - but it's also incredibly expensive and not super readily available near me. The same would go for the stuff from Geek Gaming Scenics, but I'm 99% sure that the company doesn't really exist any more as nothing ever seems to get restocked.

So in my hunting for flocks, it's become pretty clear that static grass has more-or-less replaced flock for grassland purposes. When I started wargaming as a kid in the late 90s, it was all flock all the time and so there's been a pretty big shift since then which isn't surprising.

My issue is, however, that I feel like static grass looks incredibly plasticy. I don't like how it looks at all, it seems too tall for most wargaming purposes. 4mm static grass is a whopping 22cm at 32mm wargaming scale, even larger at 28mm.

Am I wrong in this? What should I be using to achieve an effect that is similar to my reference image?

How to improve my flocking

I'm working on some base designs for an upcoming army project. I was inspired by areas of the Peak District, mainly Stanage Edge with it's mix of rocks, mud and scruby grass. And then I've thrown some rust metal in for good measure.

The issue I'm having, and why I'm posting here instead of a painting forum, is that my flock looks kinda bad. It's come out very flat and dull and I'd like it to pop a bit more (bare in mind it's slightly more dull in person!) There's a few things it could be:

- The flock simply isn't the right colour, I'm using most Javis Rough Pasture with a some bits of Javis Moorland Mixture in the darker areas

- I didn't use enough flock, there's a layer of Stirland Mud texture paint underneath that I thought would give it a realistic vibe if it showed through so I did more of a dusting application.

- I sealed it with PVA and water and maybe the sawdust flock didn't like the water

- Might be a general colour scheme issue as a lot of the elements are similar values

Anyway, those are my theories, would love some feedback from those more knowledgeable than I!

Is Oldhammer just aesthetics? Or is there something more than creates the Oldhammer feel?

I love Oldhammer, it's just everything I loved about Warhammer when I first got into it. I've been thinking recently about whether there were any books that captured the Oldhammer40K vibe.

The obvious ones are the Ian Watson books and maybe the first Space Wolves book. But that got me thinking about the things that make Oldhammer feel different, and not just look different. The visual differences are obvious, but what is it about the "lore" of older editions that makes them feel different? Does it feel different at all? Is it just nostalgia?

Edit: Obviously there's the rules too - but I think that goes without saying, but just thought I'd clarify!

Show me your Non-Mars bases

Playing around with the idea of basing my ad mech in some kind of forest scheme instead of the traditional Mars.

I'm a big fan of contrasting bases and the idea of a red model on an orange base goes very much against that - plus I'm a sucker for the verdant green bases of Oldhammer.

I'm sure there are plenty of people out there who have gone with something other than Mars for their basing schemes. I'd love to see them!

I have some Birthday cash left after buying an airbrush and have been thinking Of picking up the three vehicle box, as it's a pretty good deal from FLGSs in terms of cost per vehicle.

The thing that makes me pause, however, is the actual vehicles themselves. I already have a Dunecrawler (and while I love the model, idk if I need more than one), I'd like a Dunerider for shuttling around melee guys in 11th, and while I don't really like the laser chickens aesthetically, I understand they're useful - but people don't tend to run just one of them.

The value is great, but I'm not sure it's a particularly useful combination of stuff? Just me? What do people think?
