Maureen always questions and doubts the illnesses of other people

Celine Dion, Lena Dunham, Jennifer Aniston's boyfriend.

All of these people have shared about their struggles with physical illness, and all have been accused of either malingering or being mentally ill by Maureen Callahan.

When it comes to Lena, let's be honest: She doesn't accept Dunham's obesity. It's as if a fat sick person is responsible for all their suffering, when in many cases, physical illness (EDS --> makes mobility difficult) causes obesity. In any case, I think Maureen doesn't like her own extra padding and directs her anger toward a fat person. (She also does not like her own aging, and directs that anger at Sarah Jessica Parker, a woman who dares to age without excessive surgical interventions).

One day, Maureen may fall very ill and learn something about chronic physical suffering.

Hopefully she can cultivate self-compassion and empathy before then. It is difficult to age without it. It results in self-hatred and despair. I am afraid she may be beyond help, though.

Believe the Anhedonic

Genetics are not all the same. That should be clear by now, but it doesn't seem to be around here. Just because something helps you, doesn't mean it does not hinder others. Ashwagandha is a great example, but there are others.

You people NEED to stop contesting the claims of those adversely effected by a wildly unregulated supplement industry.

I know it disrupts your belief in control over your body and the power of supplements to change your life.

I am just asking you to change the last part: supplements do change your life, but sometimes for the worse.

Anhedonia after taking NAC - Can MM help?

Hello,

Several years ago, I took NAC over a period of 2 months and became anhedonic. After quitting the supplement I regained some of my old self, but I am still struggling with apathy and lack of motivation. I believe NAC lowered glutamate in my brain too far, which messes with other things transmitters.

Could MM help me?

Can you have regular BMs but slow motility?

I have regular BMs, and therefore don't know if motility is an issue for me. If anyone can share their experiences or knowledge, I would be much obliged.

Aciclovir (valtrex): Helps immensely, but makes it hard to sleep

Hello,

Been having a strange experience with the anti viral medication, aciclovir. I feel a huge relief from my neuro symptoms, but it's causing insomnia. I am bummed out, because I really want to give this a go. Has anyone experienced the insomnia dissipating with more use?

This experience makes me want to try anti-viral herbs (but so far, nothing has worked this well!)

Influencer body language icks

I've seen people complain about the "influencer hands."

But have you also noticed that influencers shake their heads as if to say "no" regardless of what they're saying?

People in everyday life certainly use their head to emphasize words in communication, but there's something different going on in influencer land. Picture this: "Let's get ready to go to Cheesecake Factory," with the last word emphasized by a bobble head moving back and forth.

I hate this.

PEM Tip

I no longer shower/bathe every single day. I do it every other day. I could probably go even lower than that, what with how seldom and little I sweat.

This cuts down on energy expenditures.

Employees Invading Personal Space

Has anyone else experienced Sephora employees getting REALLY close when you are browsing, especially if you are trying on a product, like foundation or blush?

I get the sense that it's an intimidation tactic?

It's super weird and creepy.

Marissa is Insecure About Dating a Younger Man (That's Why She's Sabotaging the Relationship)

It's so obvious to me what's really going on here: Marissa is VERY uncomfortable with being the older partner in an age-gap relationship. At her core, she worries that Edward finds her undesirable and is going to eventually leave her. To preempt his rejection, Marissa is basically rejecting him first.

Marissa is not confident enough to be the older partner in a relationship. This won't end well.

Looking and Feeling Sexy With Long Covid or CFS: A Brief and Actionable Guide

Hello colleagues,

One of the parts about this illness that is not much discussed is what it does to your self esteem. I am referring to our sense of desirability. I have always cared about my appearance and fitness. Here are some "hacks" that make me feel better in a body that, at least for now, can't exercise.

I am going to break this down into lymphatics/circulation, posture, and aesthetics.

Lymphatics and circulation:

If you can't exercise and get fluids moving in your body, here are a few work-arounds. First, dry brushing. Every evening, I dry brush for 15 minutes, starting with each thigh and leg (5 minutes each), and then the upper part of my body (including arms). Not only will this help in your healing journey (moving toxins out), but it will help tighten up your skin and make it smooth. (Extra tip: Try dry brushing while listening to the album Simple Things by zero 7. Just try it). Some people also swear by rebounding on a mini-trampoline.

After I dry brush, I make sure to give attention to my scalp and face. I will do a 3 minute scalp massage. This also helps with hair growth. I like this video as a guide: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I-I9qyLNhzg

When it comes to my face, I do a very simple face massage with an oil-based product (I like "Egyptian Magic Cream" for this.) Some people prefer to use tools like a jade roller or guasha stone. There are many videos on youtube demonstrating this process. I focus on each side of my face, moving from bottom to top, and finishing with a neck massage to move everything down to the clavicles. As you start to learn more about lymphatic drainage, this will all become easy and intuitive.

I also do the Perrin Technique before bed. This is a protocol for healing from CFS or long Covid, but I include it in this guide because it is another way to improve lymphatic drainage and circulation.

Of course, as you probably know, sauna and soaking in hot water are also great for your circulation. Because I can't access a sauna currently, I try and take a very hot bath with 2 cups of epsom salts every other day. It is best to do this in the evening, but everyone is different!

I devote about 1 hour each evening to the above self-care routine. Not only does it help me look better and boost my self esteem, but this is all a science-backed protocol for healing from long covid or CFS. I like to do it close to bedtime, because this is when the body is detoxing all the stuff I moved around in my body, face, and head. Read the Perrin Technique book for more info.

Posture:

I am FAR from even an amateur expert on posture, but I have found from experience that improving posture helps both health and appearance. If you can go to a specialist and have them analyze your posture, you really should. There are simple exercises that can be applied to many issues (like forward neck posture). I have issues with my neck losing its natural curve, and I also have a "dowager's hump." I find that doing Stanley Rosenberg's vagus nerve exercises truly make a difference in the functionality and appearance of my neck area (these are explained in his book, Accessing The Healing Power of the Vagus Nerve). I also will slip a rolled-up towel underneath my neck for 10 minutes. There are also a few Youtube videos which are super help specifically on the topic of loss of lordosis in the neck (one of them involves standing with your back against and wall and raising your arms up into a T shape above your head and resting them against the wall...)

But it is important to address these things with a physical therapist or chiropractor (regarding the latter: I don't let anyone "adjust" my neck, but there are many other things chiropractors can do to help with structural issues).

Aesthetics:

I have lost my ass! And I miss it! I found that due to my inability to exercise, my clothing - particularly jeans - does not flatter my derriere. My solution? I can't believe I am about to write this, but I started wearing padded underwear. It is a huge confidence boost and makes my clothing look really nice. Depending on the type you try, padded underwear can also look totally natural. I recommend the Skims "Butt Enhancing Padded Short." But there are many options out there to try. (PS: When it comes to padded bras, you can't go wrong with the wireless options from Victoria's Secret; I love the Wear Everywhere Wireless Push-Up). You can buy these used on Depop and then triple wash them to get everything super clean (ammonia, borax, epsom salts... respectively, in 3 separate washes).

Hypermobile Hips, Shoulders, and Elbows (but nothing else on the Beighton scale!)

A doctor told me I didn't have hEDS because I didn't score 5/9 on the Beighton scale, but the scale doesn't take into account my extremely flexible hips and shoulders.

Is anyone else in the same situation? Does this mean we don't have hEDS, and are instead just flexible?

I should note, for what it's worth, that I also have scoliosis, abnormal scarring, MCAS, and SIBO.

Impressions of Catie

Catie is like a character from the script of a 90s teen movie. She is messy, blunt, funny, and clearly on the spectrum. Her inherent "off-ness," manifest in her stilted speech and odd body language, is enough to set her apart as a social deviant, and colors the moral judgements her actions receive. Thus has long been the fate of many an Aspie. But I also think the hatred toward this girl is a sign of a larger turn against anything out of the cookie-cutter norm. I've always enjoyed characters. They keep life surprising and interesting. I think Catie deserves a bit more tolerance from the audience.

Also, I'm bored of Josh being portrayed as a saint simply for "putting up with her." I sense he has a bit of an edge, a bit of passive aggressiveness and a hint of malice, regardless of his association with Catie. The vibes are a bit menacing overall. She is not the only one at fault in this difficult relationship.

I can't help but wonder: Is Catie reflecting back some characteristics in viewers that the latter cannot accept in themselves? That which bothers us about others is often that which we hate about ourselves.

I am a Third Culture Kid. She is NOT one of us.

Hilaria very clearly has issues with her identity because she has a cluster B personality disorder. But she frames this as being a third culture kid (TCK), someone that grew up between at least two different countries. Going on summer vacation abroad does not a TCK make. Going to school in the second culture is a big part of where the difficulties of growing up internationally originate.

Sometimes I do pronounce SOME words SLIGHTLY different, but people rarely pick up on this. But I certainly don't have a foreign accent despite spending the majority of my childhood abroad - and I never attended international schools, meaning I was totally immersed in my second language.

Stop appropriating my third culture! :p
