Stanford drops Flock cameras amid national backlash

Stanford is wrong to abandon Flock rather than fix how the technology is governed.

License plate readers are legitimate public-safety tools, and Stanford acknowledges that its cameras helped identify and arrest repeat thieves. The problem described here is not that the technology cannot be useful; it is that data-sharing rules, access controls, retention policies, and oversight were not strong enough.

Stanford could have required strict limits on data retention, disabled external searches, conducted regular audits, documented every search, and imposed penalties for misuse. Replacing the system may address one architectural concern, but it does not eliminate the broader privacy risks associated with license plate surveillance. Any camera network can be misused without transparent policies and independent oversight.

The better response would have been to preserve a proven investigative tool while establishing enforceable safeguards. Stanford’s decision appears driven more by public backlash than by a balanced assessment of safety, privacy, and accountability.

Massive apartment fire in Foster City continues to burn Monday (KRON 4 News)

Once the fire is extinguished (it's still not extinguished as of 9:08 AM!), there are going to be two questions that need to be answered:

• How did this start? (Obviously)

• How did this fire become so difficult to contain and extinguish?

There have been some reporting and rumors that the fire started on the first floor from a BBQ, but that does remain unconfirmed and we won't see an announcement anytime soon on that. But with multiple other buildings in that complex, one has to ask about how the fire grew and burned to keep the tenants in those buildings safe, and all of their belongings safe, for the future.

Scamming Recruiters

Went back and forth with a recruiter who was set on upselling me on resume enhancement services. After saying thanks but no thanks, they next claimed I needed to provide my LinkedIn profile and password because “as part of our internal profile review process, I would kindly ask that you share your LinkedIn login details at your earliest convenience. This enables our team to complete a comprehensive review of your professional profile alongside your resume before we proceed to the next stage of the selection process.”

Next they’ll ask for my mother’s maiden name and my first pet.

Recruiter Red Flag: Upselling on Resume Writing Services

I recently had an experience with a recruiter that started with what appeared to be a legitimate outreach about a senior role. After multiple rounds of communication and resume revisions, the conversation repeatedly shifted away from the actual opportunity and toward recommendations that I pay for a third-party resume-writing service.

There was little meaningful follow-up about the role itself, the client company, or actual next steps in the hiring process. The emphasis remained on purchasing outside resume support.

I’m curious whether others have had similar experiences.
