During the Soviet period, this was a heavily controlled international frontier between the USSR and Türkiye. Access to the nearby border settlements was restricted, with entry generally allowed only to local residents registered there. The modern Sarpi–Sarp border crossing opened in 1988, shortly before the collapse of the Soviet Union.
Today it is one of the main land crossings between Georgia and Türkiye.
