Why we hate leaving our comfort zones (literally). A lesson I learned from a stubborn pigeon.

About eight pigeons grew up in my balcony, and one thing I noticed about them that was almost always common: once a pigeon grew big enough, it wouldn't want to leave the balcony. It would try its best to stay for as long as it could. Usually, there are two chicks, but one time, there was only a single egg that hatched. That particular pigeon didn't want to fly at all, even after it became mature enough. It's because just like those pigeons, our minds too try to find and stay in comfort whenever it can and however long it can. We gotta overcome this.

If you observe how the mind works, it functions almost entirely on repetition and memory. By default, it operates like software programmed to seek pleasure and avoid pain. It creates an internal map of what is "safe," and anything outside that map is flagged as a threat. The problem is that the mind tricks us into confusing familiarity with safety. The balcony isn't necessarily the best place for a pigeon to thrive, but it is known. We mistake the boundaries of our current comfort zone for the boundaries of our actual potential.

Deep down, there are two layers to our consciousness. There is the lower, impulsive mind that operates on likes, dislikes, and fear, constantly pulling us back to what is easy. But above that, we have a higher, observing power. This higher faculty is our true strength, it has the capacity to witness our fears without giving into them. True maturity isn't about destroying the fearful mind, but rather learning to step back from it, realizing that we are not our thoughtsWe are the ones observing them. When you realize that the fear is just a passing cloud in your awareness, the attachment of "balcony" loses its grip on you.

The Bhagwad Gita says the same,
BG 6.5: Elevate yourself through the power of your mind, and not degrade yourself, for the mind can be the friend and also the enemy of the self.

There was a chapter in our 10th grade titled, 'His First Flight' which is a famous story by Liam O'Flaherty. The young seagull thought his wings wouldn't support him. But ultimately, circumstances taught him that it was all just his mind limiting him he could indeed fly. You will find your wings too, just give yourself some time to adapt. I know it’s easier said than done, and I'm probably on the exact same page, but you know what? I think things always get figured out in the end.

Kindly keep posting updates from Rawalkot

I would request all Kashmiris and people of this subreddit to keep posting updates regarding Rawalkot violence. That sub (yk) won't cover it much, it's our responsibility to cover it as much as possible.
