Decided to grab a case for my glasses since I was getting nervous that I might sit on a pair in the dark or something.

On the right side we have the Sony 500s and 400s (which are basically identical, the only difference is one was included with their 3D TVs and one was sold separately) and then on the left side we have the Heaven series of RF glasses from HiShock, which is a German company. There is the Scarlet Heaven, Deep Heaven, and Black Heaven.

The stinky kid in school is the Xpand Lite RF glasses (not pictured) which are a bit too robust to fit in the slot. So they'll be put on upstairs loft duty along with another pair of Sonys.

The very top right is some cheapo brand I ordered off Ebay as backups to the backup glasses. I'll come back and update this space with the brand if I can dig it up.

I'm a mid GenX'er born in '72. Ive been handling aging pretty well for the most part, physically and mentally. But a few mins ago that all changed thanks to friggin Mark Slaughter.

Slaughter was basically a one-song band for me - never really a fan, but admit I liked "Fly to the Angels". Anyway Im on break from work a few min ago and out of the blue here comes ol' Mark - the 2026 version - on stage with the boys at Whiskey-a-go-go trying to get through that song. As Im listening to some younger fella in the band pretending to sing harmony but actually singing mostly over the top of Mark to run a bit of cover, I decide to cut this one short and pull up a live performance from years past. In the words of Julia Roberts circa 1990, "big mistake...huge!"

First vid I see - Arsenio Hall show, live performance from 1991. I fire it up, and as soon as he starts in with the chorus of that song, the nostalgia trip hits me harder than a Mike Tyson right hook and I realize that all of a sudden 1991 was a really...really...really long time ago. And Im...getting old.

Of all the people/places/things that could have triggered this realization, why the hell did it have to be Mark Slaughter. Knowing myself, Ill both remember and look back on this event tonight as a significant event in my life.

I am older than most of you (GenX) and I had not watched a single minute of anime until I saw Perfect Blue on a whim in Summer of 2025. Since that time, there have been anime that AMAZED me but lost me in the final episodes/season (AoT)...some that I expected to thoroughly love but ended up just liking (Stein's Gate)...and some that looked goofy on paper that I thoroughly LOVED every minute of (Elfen Lied). But there hasnt been that one anime to rule them all...the one that I wanted to love, expected to love, and ACTUALLY loved, until...Monster?

Ok so I dont know if I can say that yet, but I have had my eye on this one for months. I was going to start watching it on Netflix but then I heard Discotek was releasing the bluray with the English dub (I consider dubbing for live action a mortal sin but with anime I see it as an alternate vocal performance, not turning the actors into ventriloquist dummies.) so I patiently waited with my preorder in place. A week ago it finally arrived. I am only 7 eps in but I cannot even tell you how much I am loving this.

I get it...7eps is nothing...not even 10% completed yet. But this appears to be the fully adult, highly engaging, skillfully crafted and patiently told story that I have been anticipating. To already feel like a series is meeting my very high expectations- especially considering many have told me that the back half is even better than the first - has me so fired up. And now that Ive read reports that sales for the bluray release have exceeded projections, Discotek needs to get part 2 finished up in short order so I can send them a few more bucks.

All that being said, since Im still basically a newb and most of you know this stuff far better than I do, are there any other anime series or films that have a medical theme to them that you can suggest? Ive been an RN for over 20 years and that is at least partly why Im so engaged with Monster. I'd love to hear about other stuff you've all seen and enjoyed even if the ties to medical themes are loose.

**Def lean heavily into the Seinen side of things but any and all recommendations welcome and appreciated.

TL;DR Loving the early stretch of my long-awaited dive into Monster! Who's got other medical-themed anime to recommend to me?

Over the last several years Ive enjoyed exploring a director's filmography when I happen to connect with a film of theirs. I came across After-Life (1998) a couple years ago, and then followed that up with viewings of The Third Murder (2017) and Broker (2022). Late last year I saw Monster (2023), and then within the last couple months I caught Shoplifters (2018) and Maborosi (1995).

My personal ranking of these films is below, but I just finished what I now consider his best film - Nobody Knows (2004). I actually had to recover after watching this. It was quietly stressful and it takes quite a toll emotionally. When I found out the film was (loosely) based on an actual real-life event, it hit even harder.

I have yet to watch Still Walking, Like Father Like Son, Our Little Sister, etc, but he got me good with Nobody Knows.

Corinne Bohrer - She had a supporting role in the film Vice Versa (1988), a film I loved as a kid.

Grabbed Another Lonely Hitman (1995) on a whim off Ebay and geeked out over it. Had never heard of Rokuro Mochizuki but since it seemed like his stuff didnt have much presence on blu or streaming, I decided to put my completionist hat on and grab the other three in the series.

My list of favorite Japanese directors is pretty deep, so it's hard to say where he'll rank among his cohorts, but really looking forward to giving these a watch.

Ok fine, so I know some of you big shots do quads from time to time, but this would be a first for me so just let me have my fun!

Im a GenX'er, and while my earliest movie memory overall was Star Wars (1977) when I was turning 5yo, one of my earliest memories involving both my parents (my Dad mostly hated movies) was seeing Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981). In fact, the scene about 1/2 way in where a tanker tower explodes caused the whole theater to go dark for about 20 minutes while they reset the breaker, which has always made for a funny memory. It was also the first time my mom found out that you cant take your own snacks. We all showed up with brown bags full of home-popped popcorn, but ended up seeing all of them confiscated at the usher stand as we presented our tickets. We were poor af so my mom was really upset about that lol. But being able to see it again on the big screen over four decades later would be pretty cool.

Anyway, I wasnt planning on seeing Toy Story 5 but the showtimes worked out just right for the triple. But then when I saw Raiders listed in the afternoon the hamster wheel in my head started turning. So in three days I'll find out just what I'm made of when I try to pull off the impossible!

For context, Im a grown ass GenX dude, built like an NFL lineman. Last summer I saw Perfect Blue on a whim since I was already at the theater and I have one of those unlimited passes. It was the first anime Id ever seen. I was expecting a bunch of goofy furries and little kids running around and figured the chances of making it more than like 20 min were basically nil.

Long story short, I was absolutely shocked at what was going on in that film. I subsequently learned about the different categories of anime, made a watchlist of mostly seinen titles, and over the last 10mo or so have been enjoying myself.

This past weekend I had another bad flare-up of a permanent disability and felt depression taking hold at a more intense level than Ive experienced in a very long time. I took a sick day on Monday of this week and as I was trying to decide on a movie to watch, for whatever reason I tossed on The Garden of Words (2013). Ive been watching stuff like Attack on Titan, Black Lagoon, Cyberpunk, Wicked City, Golgo 13, etc, etc, so 'Garden' is not my style.

Anyway, by the time it was over I noticed my mood had lightened. I looked up the director and then did something REALLY crazy - I watched 5 Centimeters Per Second (2007) and Weathering with You (2019) back-to-back about an hour after finishing Garden. Now its Wednesday and Im feeling almost back to my baseline.

Im definitely not the target market for these, and Id probably feel a little embarrassed admitting I spent a good chunk of my Monday watching three shonen anime movies anywhere other than this sub (for the reason I stated in my first sentence), but yet again this amazing art form catches me off guard and surprises me in the most unexpected way.

TL;DR Im an old af GenX'r who watched three shonen anime movies on a whim this week and feel it helped rescue me from the stormy waters of a bout of depression.

So I'm not sure if Zavvi made a pricing error - especially since the current price is $47.99 like other outlets - but I saw this thing sitting there across the pond for $29.99 last month so I pounced on it.

Chances are something else will come available in the future at Turbine or EyePop-3D that I'll grab, but this one makes #437 3D Blurays in my collection. Theres at least a chance this will be it! 🎻

I didnt think I had any pics of this room but came across an old gallery of mine on another site and there it was. This was my first attempt at a dedicated room and I cant even begin to tell you how much fun I had in there.

Those Devore Fidelity Super8 speakers with the Devore LCR center was a seriously good front end. I listened to a lot of music back then, which was the primary basis for that purchase, but they sounded great with movies too. The amp was the Butler Audio 5150, which lasted over 15 years until, ironically, Butler Audio murdered it during a "long life tube upgrade". The projector was the Sanyo Z2, which was a solid budget offering and immediately converted me to a pj guy. My main source was the Denon 2900 Universal player...great piece of gear. Cant recall the dac I had at the time, probably the legendary TA-DAC from Tube Audio Design. The sub was the SVS PB-12 Ultra. Corner traps and that column bass trap that the pj is sitting on were GIK. But the SCREEN...the screen is what I was most proud of.

I actually used a product called Screen Goo to paint that 135" beauty. I had my doubts about it at the time but it came out so well that I bragged about it to anyone who would listen. I had no real frame of reference for a projector rig at that point, but I was impressed with the end result. Ill never forget firing it up for the first time. I chose the film Open Range (2003) to christen the pj and screen, and if youve seen it then you know that this was a solid decision.

Even though what I have now crushes it in every way other than the main speakers, this will always be a special room, rig, and time in my life. I had just gone through a painful divorce in 2005, followed by news of my mom's breat cancer a month after the divorce was final. She would pass away in July of 2007, but I got to enjoy this theater room with her during the final year of her life. She loved movies, and although she endured her treatments and battled her illness like an absolute boss all on her own, I like to think this room gave her a little extra boost in the form of a fun distraction as she fought the good fight.

I saw this back when it first came out but barely remembered it. In recent years, whenever I see it mentioned on Reddit or other social media, its usually cited as being a great film. I grabbed it on Blu a month or so ago for $7 and I have to say, if I ever needed a reminder of why most of what I buy these days is still the bluray format, this was a it.

Dont get me wrong, I grab 4k UHD and boutique discs as well - and even the occasional DVD - and love all of it, but this was such a great cinematic experience that it left me wanting for nothing. In fact, the scene toward the end where the battle with the resistance kicks off had some of the most amazing surround and low end effects that Ive ever heard.

Bluray still rocks! 🤘

I always get excited when I see early morning showtimes since I'm a day sleeper and it allows me to get a double or triple feature in instead of a single. I had a nice triple all lined up for Friday when all of a sudden I get an email notification about a refund that I never requested.

I went on the app to see what was going on and this (screenshot) is what I saw. Ive had unlimited for just under a year and never had this happen. Is this a common occurrence? Did a manager just decide they didnt like the idea of getting up early?
