For people studying in English, how important has German actually been?

I'm planning to study in an English-taught programme, and I keep seeing mixed opinions about how much German you really need. Some people say you can get by with English, while others say not knowing German makes life much harder.

For those who are already studying in Germany, what has your experience been like? Has not speaking much German affected things like finding a part-time job, getting internships, dealing with paperwork, making friends, or just everyday life?

I'm not expecting to live entirely in English, but I'd like to know how much German has actually mattered in practice for you.
