Pixel Art Tribute to Tenacious D in Wonder Boy Style

Pixel Art Tribute to Tenacious D in Wonder Boy Style

Hi everyone!

A while ago I made these two 16-bit style sprites inspired by an illustration created by Ben Fiquet found on his X profile. The original artwork featured the members of Tenacious D drawn in the same cartoonish visual style used in other artorks by the same artist.

Using only MS Paint, I transformed the artwork into small pixel-art sprites. I started by simplifying the original illustration into a sprite-friendly format and resizing everything. As for the colors, I honestly don’t remember the exact references I used back then, but after browsing some fan art recently, I realized I was probably inspired by other interpretations of the duo online.

I’d love to know what you think. Do the sprites capture the spirit of the original illustration and of Tenacious D themselves? 😄

As a little extra detail, I also gave Young Nastyman the legendary broadsword mentioned in the song, even though it wasn’t present in the original black-and-white artwork.

My experience into developing a game with RPGmaker (2003)

Hi,

I want to share with you my experience. Sub reddit rules do not permit to post about game based on licensed IP: since my game is a fan-game I believe this is a rule about my situation.

At least I want to share my experience with you and ask if you went through the same.

I started alone into developing my game in the early 2000. The tool I used was RPGMaker 2000 (and I beliebe it wasn't even an official release but a fan-translation - not sure).

I'm not even sure if telling the name of my project is legit here, so I avoid it for this only reason (I perfectly know who wants to learn about it can easily find info about).

The series of games I take inspiration on were platformer and action/rpg platformer: even if I had knowledge about programming and PC usage in general, I had not the skill to create my game from scratch. In the 90s I tried doing something with a software called "The Game Factory" and even managed to land some games, but nothing special and they were heavy "raw". Sadly they are now lost media.

So, finding about RPGMaker was a real discovery for me: the interface was very good and far more user friendly than the previous tool and it can show you immediately the results of your first test into gaming development.

Since I tried to port platformer into RPG I called my game "**** RPG" taking inspiration by the title Super Mario RPG ("original game name + RPG", quite simple, right?).

I managed to create a first demo of the game alone with mixed graphics (some ripped from original sources, some from stok graphics RTP of RPGMaker).

By the way the game lef its impression on someone since a guy named Fernando joined me into a team to continue programming the game after the demo.

Telling the truth, releasing the demo was my goodbye letter to programming since... at that point I had enough. By sharing the demo on fan gaming forums I gave my benediction to whom first would contact me to inherit the project and continue from were I left (in my original idea I would allow everyone who asked me to continue aiming to se how different people would have continued the story - but I receives a single call!).

So in the end, switching to RPGMaker2003, I continued to work along with Fernando with him mainly programming and me doing the storyboard and some sprites (sometimes roles switched between us, except programming which remained into Fernando duties).

We went through about 10-13 years of development. Fernando released new levels after our brainstorming and I tested them again and again.

To simplify my tests he gave me a cheat savefile in order to have characters with maxed out levels (in this way, "skipping" all battles, tests of the game went faster).

So, something of you did share a similar stori into "rpgmaking"? Were you able to release your full game? Did you take about 10 years too?

Tenacious D sprites 16 bit

Hi, starting from an artwork of Ben Fiwqet for Lizard Cube game The Dragon's Trap (Wonder Boy), I crated two sprites using only MS paint. Tha artwork was a special one depicting the Tenacios D duo in the graphic style use for the game artwork. The nod was that thei sing the song "Wonder Boy" and the game was "Wonder Boy". Pretty obsious, isn't it? I attach both my sprite and the original artowk for comparison. I started from the artwork reducing them in pixel and to 2D game sprite size. For the coloration I really don't remember since I created them something like years ago for my fan-game, but looking on google images in the last days made me believe I based my choiches on some other fan artwork of the duo. What do you think? Did I pay justice to the original artowork and to the Tenacious D? ;) PS: for Young Nastyman I even added his broad sword mentioned in the song which did not appeared in the B&W artwork.

What will be of the series? Do you still hope in a relaunch?

A news of this year is Capcome renewing right on his IPs and wanting to invest on them. What are your hopes for Volnutt's ant Bonne's family return?

My hopes/dream is a HD remastered collection for modern consoles featuring all games and extra materials:

- Megaman Legends (playable in both versions, PS1 and N64)

- Misadventures of Tronn Bonne

- Megaman Legends 2 USA Demo Disc;

- Megaman Legends 2 JAP Demo DISC (MMD2 Episode 1)

- Megaman Legends 2 (MMD2 Episode 2)

- The game for cellphones (5 island something)

- all the minigames for cellphones

- The demo released for 3DS regarding Megaman Legends 3)

- What else?

If a collection like this is done rights and hits the market, it would FINALLY be the time for a megaman legends 3 and I will say it should be done in Zelda BOTW and TOTK like.

A free roaming great map, half of it reprising all the zones from the previus titles in the collection, and the other half totally new. Navigation from an island to another will be done throght the flutter or other airships and you can also visits and land on other airships (bigger and small).

MML world has a Laputa vibes in its world building, so try to think how a world like this would shine in a BOTW like engine.

What are yout toughts about?

Monster World RPG (free complete PC Windows JRPG made with RPGMaker2003)

A retro turn-based JRPG made with RPG Maker 2003 by MAX TEAM & MOTA. It's a fan project inspired by Sega's Wonder Boy and Monster World series, but features a completely original story (not a sequel, remake or prequel).

The game has a classic old-school feel and comes ina a package with the full version, original soundtrack, art gallery, multiple old demos, and even a bonus game.

In line with the purpose of this subreddit, I just wanted to bring it to your attention if you're into classic-style JRPGs or the Monster World franchise.

The game is officially listed on itch io. Just search for “Monster World RPG”.

Has anyone already played it?

Looking for advice on promoting a fan game, especially on Reddit and social media

Hi everyone,

I'm currently in the promotion phase of my fan game and I’d love to hear some experienced advice from the community. What strategies have worked well for you when promoting your games, both on social media (X, Instagram, TikTok, Youtube, etc.) and here on Reddit?

I’m particularly struggling with Reddit. Every time I try to share something or ask for feedback, I run into different restrictions and rules: no showcasing, limited self-promotion, context-only links, etc. It feels like I’m walking through a minefield. On one hand Reddit seems like one of the best platforms to reach real game developers and players, get meaningful feedback, and connect with potential players. On the other hand, the rules often feel inconsistent and scary to navigate, which makes me hesitant to post at all. Does anyone else feel this same discomfort and anxiety when trying to promote or share their work on Reddit? Or is it just me overthinking it? I’d really appreciate any tips, successful approaches, or even cautionary tales about promotion. Whether it’s about building an audience organically, timing posts, using the right subreddits, or balancing visibility with rule compliance: I’m all ears.

Thanks in advance!

Practicing my post formatting. What’s one Reddit tip you wish you knew earlier?

Hi everyone! 👋

I'm still pretty new to Reddit and I'm practicing how to write a normal, engaging post with some basic formatting. I wanted to try bold, italics, lists, and how to ask a question that might actually help others too.

Here’s what I tried:

  • Using short paragraphs so it’s easy to read
  • Adding a little emoji (not too many)
  • Making a short list
  • Ending with a real question

My question for you:

What’s one small thing you wish you had known earlier when you first started using Reddit? It could be about formatting, subreddit rules, or just general etiquette.

I’d love to hear your tips. They really help new users like me!

Thanks for letting me practice here 😊
