Ok here's a random one. State your generation and find a watch you'd buy if money were no object. Let's see if there are any generational similarities!

Horology is a neat field!

I started building watches as a hobby recently and I'm curious if there are preference trends across generations. I just built my fantasy watch (pic 1), and my wife's fantasy watch (pic 3), as well as a practice attempt (pic 2).

When yapping about this hobby, I notice my Gen Z friends gravitate towards more avante garde designs, my boomer friends gravitate towards more classic designs, my Gen X friends are all over the place, and my millennial friends tend to gravitate towards either minimalist designs or smart watches.

I'm curious if there's a wider trend here! If you have a fantasy watch, let's see it. If you don't have a fantasy watch, see if you can find a design that jumps out at you on the ole Google images and share it below. If enough people contribute, we can see what trends appear!

Not a Pilot watch, but a Pilot's watch.

Built an NH72 centered around my lifelong love of Aviation. It's pretty darn legible despite being a skeleton build. Got to take it on its maiden flight this morning.

I will carefully comb through your profile (comments too) and tell you what kind of arthropod you'd be.

Do you exude the strength of an elephant stag beetle? Perhaps the curiosity of a Bold Jumping spider? The clumsiness of a Western Black widow? I will try to deduce who you are from your reddit profile, and then tell you what arthropod you seem most similar to.

How this hobby feels sometimes:

We have been completely spoiled by 3 day shipping, ordering from ali feels like a time machine to the early 2000s shipping speeds.

Songs where the instruments are fighting...and one side is VASTLY outmatched by the other.

This should be a fun one! I want to hear instrumental families being absolutely DOMINATED by other instrumental families.

Here's an example, Consequence of Power by Jose Pavli: https://youtu.be/24s\_\_TuWmS0?is=kceTqVTxaYZ\_HFTt

In this piece, and its accompanying media, there are leitmotifs for two sides of a conflict. One side is the strings, and the opposing side is the brass, percussion, etc. The string section is this tiny WHIMPER against a relentless onslaught from the opposing side, and I LOVE IT.

I NEED MORE! MORE!!!!

For a well known example, the imperial march: https://youtu.be/-bzWSJG93P8?is=5ks4YIOd36CarP3u

The empire gets the heavy brass, low woodwinds, and percussion, while the rebels get the strings, lyrical woodwinds, and softer brass.

In the imperial march, the rebel's instruments are completely dominated by the empire's. But this one doesn't fit quite as well since they don't sound like they're in active conflict, the rebel instruments sound more like they're slinking around out of sight.

I want to hear the musical equivalent of a hero fighting against all odds and just getting curb stomped.

Any genre or subgenre I love everything RAHHH

I haven't seen a watch saddle build on here before! Stardust dial VH31 movement.

My wife took an interest in the VK63 build I made, but wanted something to wear in a belt loop instead of on her wrist. So I helped her pick out the parts she liked and here we are! Just need to flip it 180 degrees so it reads right side up from the waist.

The VH31 spacer I bought didn't fit the case quite right so I had to cut it closer to size, turned out fairly well I reckon. The stardust dial is AWESOME

New noise when shifting into reverse and I can't find any related forum posts. 2018

Anyone have any ideas?

First ever attempt was a great success!

Rodico made it easy as pie to get all the tiny hands into place, thanks for suggesting the magical putty to me y'all!

First ever attempt! Apart from tools, am I missing anything here?

I'm excited to try this hobby! I could never decide on a premade watch, so I figure I'll just make my own!

How does this look so far? Am I missing anything? Should I order the movement from a particular seller?

Hey folks. I'm interested in watchmaking and I'm a total beginner. Figured I'd pick a good movement and go from there!

I'm looking for something very inexpensive, since this will be a first attempt:

Preferably Quartz (willing to go higher budget for better accuracy)
Chronograph
31 day ring for the date.
Bonus points: Solar

OR

An inexpensive automatic that would look very nice in a skeleton watch. OR OR one that could be skeletonized.

Then the rest'll be fun! I was thinking of machining a custom case and such while I learn the assembly process.

But I have to start by picking a movement, so any help would be much appreciated!
