Regarding VLSI industry

I am about to join college and will most likely pursue a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering (not confirmed yet).I wanted to understand how the VLSI industry works today. I've heard many people say that VLSI has a promising future and offers excellent salaries.Considering the current situation in the software industry, where competition for CS jobs is very high and recent layoffs have been concerning, would choosing VLSI as a career be a better option? If my thinking is flawed or I'm looking at this the wrong way, I'd really appreciate your guidance. Your advice would help me make a more informed career decision
