Feb 2025 — Liberated Brands, which ran Quiksilver, DC Shoes, Billabong, Volcom, and RVCA, filed for bankruptcy. 1,000+ employees laid off, every retail store closed.

Backstory: Oaktree Capital bought Quiksilver/DC in a 2016 bankruptcy, renamed the company Boardriders Inc., then bought Billabong for $155M in 2018. Authentic Brands Group rolled it all into Liberated Brands in 2023. Liberated reportedly owed $83M secured debt and $143M unsecured — including $50M in unpaid royalties owed to riders.

DC didn't die because skaters stopped caring. It died because it kept getting flipped.
