I was just talking to one of the few people I’m actually really close to. They have a problem I had come up with a few ideas to help with. I shared my ideas and, from my point of view, they responded with potential problems with my suggestions. I responded with why I didn’t think those potential problems were applicable

They said I was being defensive

I tried to explain I wasn’t and was trying to be helpful.

Note: I truthfully had no attachment to my suggestions being used or being right, but I don’t want her to disregard a solution that would work and unnecessarily continue to have a problem

They seemed to think I was either feigning helpfulness at that point or something else I didn’t understand so I apologized and reiterated I wanted to help so if it doesn’t help, just disregard

They said they feel like they respond to what I’m saying but end up feeling like they can’t say anything right and should just shut up because they make me feel bad about myself - then they circled back to me being defensive

I didn’t know where to go from here and didn’t want it to get worse so I tried to just end the conversation as smoothly and pleasantly as possible

But now, instead of helping someone I care about find a solution to their problem, I lead them into a conversation that made them walk away feeling bad, still with no clear solution. This type of thing happens to me more often than it should

I just even re-read the sequence of events and can’t see where the trouble is. I am genuinely trying to be helpful and don’t ever want to make anyone feel bad. The overall effect of my speaking is not helpful and makes others feel bad though

The best solution I see is to not care about the outcome of conversations (as in, information relayed, solutions reached, conclusions settled upon, accuracy etc.) and just go with the flow of the conversation for the sake of both of us hearing ourselves talk. But this seems like such a waste of a chance to be genuine and to potentially make real life situations better. Admitting though, currently that’s not what I’m doing either, but I hate to just quit trying

If you smack your food, slurp, basically do anything so that I can hear what’s going on in your mouth… just know, I’m actually demonstrating heroic self control by not punching you

I get unreasonably, irrationally irate the second I hear people eating. I mean like I want to blow up the entire building you’re occupying type furious

A girl I know was on an ego trip and threatening me. To try and drive her point home, she was trying to prove she was really going to do all the stuff the was raging about and said “do you see fear in my eyes?”

I said “no” and paused, just long enough for her to start really feeling good about herself

The second she did, I hit her with, “you actually just look completely insane”

I’m trying to help an elderly woman who has hearing loss, here’s what I know:

•she purchased Widex hearing aids twice, she has warranty card for one set that expired 2019 and one set that expired 2023

•both sets of hearing aids stopped working, I don’t know why the first was replaced instead of being repaired

•the second set of hearing aids stopped working before the warranty expired in 2023 but after the local business where they were purchased ceased operation. I don’t have exact dates for either

•the woman thought she was just “out of luck” since the local business was no longer there to repair the hearing aids and honor the warranty

•my research indicates I can ask another authorized dealer to file with Widex for a warranty exception due to the circumstances, but that would require the cost of an office visit at minimum, possibly more, and that’s if the exception was approved by Widex

•Widex says they do not approve exceptions directly for customers, it must be done through an authorized dealer

•I do not know the exact level of hearing loss, I do know she misses almost all conversation and struggles to hear even if you raise you voice to just under a yell (assume by “yell” I mean how loudly you’d speak if you were trying to talk to someone 2-3 rooms away)

•she is on a fixed income and has very little income, but does have some savings, I’m not sure how much. I suspect her monthly expenses exceed income by probably $200-$400

•I wonder how reliable Widex hearing aids are if we get hers repaired (this is her 2nd pair that’s broken)

•I wonder how effective AirPod pros are as hearing aids

•does anyone have any similar experiences or input or advice you can share?

•she has been unable to hear for years and resolving this would increase her quality of life greatly

•this is EVERYTHING I know, so please, anything I don’t know- tell me!

When you commit to a relationship, you’re not just committing to not date other people. You’re committing to maintaining that relationship

That means you can assume the relationship exists, unless you’re TOLD it doesn’t

If ghosting and blocking is acceptable, any time the person leaves your presence or hangs up the phone, you may get ghosted and blocked

Except in cases of manipulation where you have had that breakup conversation and were manipulated into changing your mind or in cases of abuse where you could be physically hurt for saying you want to end the relationship, it is not ok to ghost and/or block

You are breaking the commitment you made when you started the relationship just as certainly as if you cheated
