Been looking for a relatively large desk mousepad for a while.

It’s mainly for work, I wouldn’t use it for gaming.

Priorities:

Material not being polyester/synthetic or glass

Durable / stitched edges

Large and rectangular shape at least 200mm x 600mm but ideally 300mm x 800mm

I don’t have a budget, if it fills these needs, I’ll spend the money regardless.

I can’t imagine there are many around that fill this niche. But if any Reddit community is going know, It’ll be you guys.

I recently bought some old drives, most of them at 15,000 to 30,000 power on hours.

I’ve got 17 HGST Ultrastar, Seagate Barracuda and WD Greens with a total of around 80tb.

Perfect smart data, no cautions or anything.

Should I use Raid5 for multiple of these or is there a much higher risk? I know they’re CMR drives so it should be fine.

Would it be wise to use these in my OWC Thunderbay 4 with Softraid / RAID5?

Or is there a significant risk because the drives have a lot of power on hours?

I’ve looked at dozens from TerraMaster, IcyBox, QNAP and even StarTech.

But I’m sold by the reliability of OWC, I absolutely love my Express 1M2 80G but I really need some sort of permanent desktop storage.

I’m not interested in a NAS.

So, I’m just curious, will the Thunderbay 4 ever get an upgrade? It’s been 12 years… and I don’t want to invest $500+ into some hardware that’s ancient by now.

If there’s no upgrade in sight, what would you guys recommend?

I’m very new to data storage/cold storage and only recently got my first DAS, but I’ve been offered all of these drives for just under 700 usd.

I only really needed the HGST drives but he offered all of them to me at a significant discount.

My questions are:

Would this be too much of a headache to manage?

Should I just buy all of them and instantly retire some of them?

Is there a risk with using drives that have a SMART Caution?

I’ve got an OWC Thunderbay 8, but other than that, not sure what I would do with the other drives.

I’m an editorial and press photographer by trade so these technically could be used as backups for catalogues that I’m no longer working on, an archive per se.

But honestly, completely out of my depth and any expertise would be massively appreciated.

All drives have been tested using CrystalDiskInfo and are fully detected.
