PSA - Maintain Your Ride!

PSA - Maintain Your Ride!

Ever found yourself stranded in the middle of Kentucky because your car won't start? Engine condition too low? Hood gone? All windows smashed in?

Do you often think to yourself; "Hmm. I don't have enough trunk space in my car."

Well my friends, there's only one reason behind your misfortunes. The manufacturer of your car made a shoddy product. But all those guys are dead now, so it's on YOU to keep those wheels turning.

So next time your hood flies off, or your windows collapse, or your trunk space gets reduced to mere atoms...

Pick up that welder. Pick up that wrench. Pick up the screwdriver.

And fix your whip. Finding a new one in better condition is not as easy as one may think.

You'll thank yourself in the long run. Those long drives between towns are much more preferable than walks that take multiple days just to find a can opener. A/C is a nice bonus too.

Strange idle behaviour - M111.940

Don’t know what could cause this. Wiring loom is replaced, the butterfly on the throttle body is closed.

Photos of my childhood home - Ft. My Gavril

Good morning everybody.

Today I have some photos I've recovered of my childhood home! These were taken by my father in June of 2001. You can see my mother and fathers cars in two of these photos, plus the Gavril Dynamo I'd posted recently. The Dynamo was my grandfathers project car for about 9 years, though he gave me the car in 2010 because he lost interest in working on it. He still comes by to drive it occasionally, though. If anyone has any questions about it, feel free to ask. :)

The LeGran and the Wendover, I do not know what happened to those. I moved out of my parents house in 2005 and I seldom visited them. They must've been scrapped at some point after I moved, as by 2010, they were definitely not around anymore.

Firwood History - RESTORED POLICE PHOTO FOUND

Good morning everyone. Today I have found a real treat for you all.

A month ago I had found a roll of film in the archives of the Firwood PD that I bought at an auction. Most of the photos on there were of evidence taken in back in the 1960s, but this photo was in there too. It seems to show Firwood PD after having caught a rowdy Barstow in 1968. Interestingly, you can see one of the Firwood Dynamos behind the Bluebucks in this photo. On the very left you can also see the personal police vehicle of then Sheriff Buford Tremblay. It's kind of eerie knowing all of the vehicles in this photo are now scrapped.

MAJOR UPDATE - Pursuing the Interceptors

Hi all.

I just came home from my visit with Gavril specialist Stephen Wells and have some major news about the Gavril Bluebuck interceptor cars!

After a lengthy conversation with Mr. Wells, I finally can share a fully comprehensive history behind these vehicles, their purposes, and their fates.

The History;

In late 1961, Gavril had introduced their latest iteration of the Bluebuck. It made headlines all over the nation, the Gavril Bluebuck takes over the road and does it by storm.

Naturally, major city police forces wanted in on the new Gavril Fullsize cars. Cities all over the US, Belasco for example, commissioned hundreds of police-spec Bluebucks. The car quickly caught on as a reliable, sturdy and all around versatile vehicle for all kinds of policework, whether it be patrolling the suburbs or pursuing criminals in the city.

But there was a problem. As soon as criminals went for the highway, the cars simply could not keep up. There were hundreds of reports about the 353 engines overheating and seizing, throwing rods, suspension components conking out, inability to keep up with modified vehicles and so on and so forth. This was a known issue among many PDs in the country.

In mid 1962, Gavril introduced the RoadSport Bluebuck. A highway demon equipped with a 423cuin V8 coupled to a 4spd manual gearbox. Built for performance and drag racing. Police departments all over the nation jumped at the opportunity to have a fleet of high speed pursuit vehicles at their disposal for immediate use. And Gavril delivered.

Through reallocation of taxpayer money, most cities in the US were now outfitted with 20-40 Interceptor spec Bluebucks. Belasco had 35 of these. But one city stood out in the roster. It was Firwood.

Firwood is not as much a city as it is a small town. There was no need, or money, for these Interceptors. But the police force demanded a set of them. There was a major scandal in September of 1962, wherein the mayor of Firwood was accused of illegally reallocating taxpayer funds towards the police departments new Bluebuck Interceptor fleet, leading to an impeachment. But the damage was done. Firwood had been granted 10 Interceptor Bluebucks.

Their usage was minimal. They mostly sat in the backlot of the PD gathering dust, but were infact occasionally used in high speed pursuits somewhere in the late '60s. A very famous pursuit among Firwood residents happened in 1968, when a Gavril Barstow famously caused a major pileup on the outskirts of Firwood and the department was forced to use the Interceptors to well, intercept the Barstow.

Their usage was still minimal in the grand scheme of things. By 1969, the cars had fallen into major disrepair. Years worth of salt, snow, rain and mud had taken their toll on the cars frames and chassis. The engines were more comparable to boat anchors now, constantly backfiring and having all sorts of mechanical setbacks which costed the PD thousands in repairs. They were not feasible purchases, nor justifiable ones.

By 1975, the Interceptors were all quietly retired in favour of using Bruckell Moonhawks. All 10 cars were written off and quietly towed to a junkyard to be parted out. Three examples were bought by Firwood residents, one being the car that is now in private hands. The second, was a car that was seemingly written off in 1998. I have also posted a photo of this car before. The third car, as of writing this, is still missing without a trace.

Mr. Wells has no idea where the car could be or who could own it. His RoadSport Bluebuck (pictured above) does however have parts out of a retired Interceptor. The 423 in the car was taken from an Interceptor in 1979 as a backup motor.

The other Interceptors from other cities have been largely preserved, leaving the Firwood unit cars to be the most mysterious and most confusing vehicles in the entire history of Firwood PD's vehicle lineup. The Gavril Dynamo Sheriffs cars were arguably less expensive and more reliable than the Interceptors.

I will continue hunting for "the missing interceptor" and will post any updates I find here on Beambook. Stay tuned, folks.

In pursue of the Interceptors...

I'm taking the old Dynamo out on a small 200 mile round trip to meet a Bluebuck specialist in Maine. He might be able to help me track down more info on the Interceptor cars. Perhaps even find a car.

Following up a lead...

I was told that there is an abandoned Bluebuck out in the fields near Firwood that could potentially have been a former interceptor. I was warned the engine was removed, but I was not told that the entire car was basically a rolling chassis with little to no parts left to inspect.

The car very clearly lacks the police livery on the side and due to the absent front fascia, I can't confidently say that this was infact an interceptor. It does have a sport cluster, but everything else is missing. The VIN was also stolen and is not recoverable. The damage and rust seem to imply this car has been in this field for several decades, so I can't fully place the timeframe where it was abandoned either. I don't think this was an interceptor. The only things hinting at it being one are the blue paint and the sport cluster.

I tried drilling out the trunk lock to get in but to no avail, it seems like its rusted itself shut completely. Going in through the backseat was also not possible.

I think the Interceptors are all just goners, except for the one preserved example that is in private hands. Truly a shame.

Smell that, boys? It’s the smell of shit in the air.

u/NotA-Spy — 14 days ago

Hi all,

I've managed to dig up some further info on the old Firwood intereceptor units, specifically the ones from the early 1960s.

As it turns out, Firwood had a fleet of about 15 of these cars. They were equipped with the Gavril 423 Big Block and had subsequent RS-Spec chassis upgrades to handle the higher power output. Most of these cars were sold for scrap in the mid 1970s and only three have been purchased privately. One, being the one from the previous post I'd made about these cars.

After some research through old Firwood archives and DMV records, I managed to find these two photos of another old unit that was last seen in the late '90s. I have no further info on what happened to it after 1998, but the second photo seems to imply the car was damaged heavily as the rear windows are broken, the bumper is hanging loose and there seems to be a deformation on the cars chassis. I have tried contacting the last known owner, but to no avail. I have left a message on their answering machine but I don't count on getting a response.

Be careful when scouting for these, if you go to a junkyard and find one of these and it does NOT have a 423 in the VIN, OR, it has a smaller engine but with the same livery, you are looking at a replica car or a Sheriffs car that was sold for scrap.

u/NotA-Spy — 14 days ago

I've been perusing online about the history of Firwood and their public service vehicles, and I noticed a good portion of Sheriffs vehicles were preserved or bought out privately. But, there is a distinct lack of mention for any of the interceptor vehicles. The tuned up Bluebucks, for example, that were used for high speed pursuits.

This picture is of one of the only known preserved examples I could find. It's in private hands from my understanding and does not get driven at all.

Does anyone have any info?

Will this 1968 Dodge Charger crank hawg after sitting in a barn for 15 years?

No. But it looks cool!

I think it’d help hone in our driving skill. Making friends with fear makes us better drivers.

And there’s nothing more frightening than driving with a live cougar in the car.

In todays episode of Scrapyard Dale, we tackle an old abandoned Imponte Dukes which has been sitting for well over 20 years. Will it run and drive around the block so we can get some P's & Q's? Stay tuned to find out.
