I'm having an easier time

When I first started using FreeCAD (just over a year ago), I found it frustrating. Part of that was my workflow, having come from Solidworks, but part was the software as well.

I've recently started some more work after quite a few months of being idle, and I get the impression things are easier. I'm not getting as many crashes, I'm not having to change my workflow to get around issues as much, it seems like there's been quite a bit of improvement from a layperson's standpoint.

It doesn't really matter, I don't really have any other choice, but I thought I'd come and say thanks to the developers, your hard work is noticed and appreciated.

"Google has found your passwords online"

I got an email to this effect. I can't see the notification anymore, but it explicitly said it had detected some of my passwords on the internet.

Once I was satisfied it wasn't a scam, I followed the procedure, logged in and found it said the following:

No compromised passwords

Your passwords are unique

2 accounts using weak passwords (both are expired anyway).

I am really pissed off about this. Google explicitly lied to me, it hadn't found any of my passwords online. What a garbage company.

Disks doesn't seem to like my memory card

CachyOS w/Cinnamon

I have an SD card (128 GB) that wasn't being detected by files. I used disks to delete the existing partition, then created a new one and tried to format it. It keeps encountering an error (I can't reproduce it at the moment). I can quick format it, but when I enable erase, it fails. To me it sounds like damaged memory.

I used F3 to test the card, it shows 100% capacity, no corrupt data. I tried to format the card again after doing this, and it still failed.

I use the card in a dashcam, so I have to be able to trust it 100%. I'm currently of the mind to assume that it's no good and can't be used, but it would be nice to be able to fix it/show that's it hasn't failed.

Is it possible that disks is having problems, or is it more likely the card has failed? It's a SanDisk high-endurance card, but I have a feeling the temperature in the car just got too hot perhaps.

Would you say this is definitely a card issue, or could it be some problem with Linux? I'd hate to have to buy all new memory cards for the dashcam.

Driver own fail, CachyOS

Yesterday I noticed that my wireless connection dropped. This morning, I noticed that it still wasn't working. I decided to reboot, and received a couple of 'driver own fail' errors, which caused the shutdown to hang. I had to reset the machine.

Upon restart, the connection worked normally. After doing some reading, it seems that a there's a lot of issues of this sort with the mt7921 NIC from mediatek. I'm not sure which model I have, but it's definitely a mediatek product.

My assumption is that this might have something to do with Cachy being a rolling release, and perhaps some recent changes introducing issues with network drivers. From what I gather, the error itself has something to do with two different services trying to use the same driver.

I haven't made any configuration changes, especially to the network config, so I figure it's some change introduced with an update. Does that make sense?

How reliable is file copying?

I was just watching an old video I recorded. It was probably from 2010 or so. These files have been sitting on my hard drive since then, having been tranferred between various drives in the intervening years.

I noticed that they're now corrupt. Certain parts of them will have artifacts and will skip frames as if the data is missing/garbled.

I can only assume there was a problem when copying them. I most recently used FreeFileSync to copy them to a brand new drive, I suppose it could've happened then.

Sorry for the long preamble, my question is: when a file is copied, is verifying the integrity part of the process with Linux? Does it look at checksums of the copy and compare them to the original? Does it vary with file system (source and destination are both EXT4).

I'm wondering if this new drive may be faulty (it's a Toshiba if that means anything), or maybe there was a mistake when copying the files that didn't get corrected.

Update: I think I'm just being more of a moron than usual. The problem seems to be with the video player (Haruna). I played the same file with Celluloid, and I didn't see the artifacts. Maybe it's a codec/settings problem.

Be vigilant about dashcam power

I got a new dashcam a couple of years ago (Viofo A129), and found the power cord is just slightly too short for the route I want to run it. I don't have it wired in, I just use the power adapters.

In a couple of instances, I've noticed it powering off almost right away. I haven't yet found the precise location, but it's a loose connection.

The reason I'm mentioning this is because (like many others I'm sure), I no longer notice the notification when it starts up, the same way I don't notice how my house smells.

Today, I got on to the highway to head home from work, and saw someone three cars in front of me turn around and drive the wrong way on the highway shoulder, so they could get to the exit they missed. The two cars in front of me had to slow and swerve.

I got home and just found that I didn't record it. My camera recorded me leaving the parking lot at work, and then nothing else. It's set to overwrite old footage, so space couldn't have been the issue. I can only assume it lost power.

I know this seems very obvious: dashcam no record without power, but the trick here is that it can lose power without you knowing, assuming you've tuned it out the way I have.

Lucky for me, there was no real need for the footage, but some day there will be, I'll have to make sure I get this power issue sorted quickly and for good.

It's also worth noting that it's directly behind my mirror, so I can't see the display at all when driving.

See the 'smoke' for what it is.

I'm assuming most of you have seen the news about the u.s. politician asking Canada to stop our wildfire smoke from entering their airspace (again).

I want to make it clear to everyone: this isn't a literal request. It's a tactic. He's attempting to put Canada on the back foot and make Canadians look bad among his followers so they can use it as leverage in any negotiations (CUSMA, the Gordie Howe bridge etc).

Even he's not stupid enough to think what he's asking is in any way feasible. These are grifters, they're not geniuses, but even they aren't quite that stupid.

▲ 32 r/Metric

I am so sick and tired of struggling to find metric items.

I live in Canada, and we're still a slave to american products. That means anything we produce will be manufactured with imperial dimensions. I'm sick of it.

I've been trying to find perforated aluminium sheet, and it's all imperial. I've been able to find several suppliers in Canada (and overseas), but none of them make a metric product. It makes my design work much more difficult. I have to spend tons of time calculating offsets and doing conversions, it's a huge waste.

Metric perforated plate

I need to buy some perforated aluminum sheet/plate, but everything I see is imperial. I've found a couple of Canadian companies that sell it, but nobody seems to make it in metric dimensions.

Is there anyone here in the metals industry that can suggest a Canadian (or at least non-american) source for metric perf plate? I'd even consider stainless steel at this point.

Consider sending something like this to your MP

I just sent an email to my MP (I'm in Canada). I'd like to suggest you do the same. Here's what I said:

"I'd like to ask you to propose some changes in the way we distribute resources.

Currently, Canada (I assume the decision comes from the federal government) sends assistance to the united states to help them fight wildfires. I'd like to see this stopped.

John James, a congressman from michigan, has repeatedly called on Canada to stop our wildfire smoke from drifting over his country. There are a few facts I'd like to point out here:

  1. The u.s. has repeatedly attacked Canadian commerce with tariffs, which are almost certainly the reason we're now in a recession.
  2. They have also been complaining for years about our defense spending, which we are now increasing by a very large amount.
  3. They are the single largest contributor to greenhouse gas emissions (about 25% of all emissions throughout history).

Since there are finite resources available, which come from a smaller pool now, if we're to improve our firefighting capability, the only option is to better allocate the resources we do have. That means keeping them all to ourselves. If they can implement 'america first' policies, surely we can do the same.

I think it's time to spend Canadian dollars on Canadian problems and give Mr. James what he's asking for. Let's use 100% of our resources within Canada and send none of them south of the border going forward."

Could a binary system explain the erratic seasons in Game of Thrones?

I've seen a few potential explanations for why the seasons in this show have variable and unpredictable lengths. They all address variability, but not unpredictability.

I'm wondering if it could be explained by the planet orbiting in a binary system, perhaps it switches from one star to another at times?

Of course, there's never any mention of more than one star, I'm just wondering if you could potentially get unusual seasons and still keep the planet habitable over long periods?

My gut tells me it would be exceptionally rare for something like this to avoid wild temperature swings that render it uninhabitable for periods.

Yet more maple washing

Looking at the Canadian Tire website for biodegradeable garbage bags and I noticed yet more maple washing. They're showing Glad brand with a maple leaf. They may be packaged here, but the profits still end up in the u.s. economy. Shame on you Canadian Tire. I can't say I'm surprised, but I'm still disgusted.

Remember, the worse the u.s. economy does, the sooner we'll be rid of the orange toddler. Every cent counts.

Number balloons

This is something that particularly bothers me. There's this trend of people taking birthday pictures, and they place these balloons behind them (shaped as numbers).

I'm assuming these are thrown out and that they're not some long-lasting set of balloons that are repeatedly used over decades. Even if they are, they're still things that have to be manufactured and simply aren't needed.

To me it's a glaring example of our unrestricted and wasteful consumption.

Some apps no longer use dark mode?

I've noticed recently (within the past couple of weeks perhaps) that a couple of my apps have turned white, when I have dark mode turned on. Specifically: keeppass and the terminal.

I'm using Cinnamon, and I update often. I'm wondering if this has to do with an update perhaps?

It's not a huge deal, but it is a curiosity. I can always restore from my saved image if necessary.

I've checked, as far as I can see, they're both still set to use the system default.

Note: I opened them both a couple of minutes ago, they were both white. I just opened them both again, they're now dark. I didn't do anything in between except open Vivaldi and come here to post. I'm going to assume it's some sort of bug, but it's definitely interesting.

A method of fastening weight to wrists?

I'm wondering if there's a product out there, perhaps a velcro strap, that's intended to let me fasten weights to my wrists so I don't have to hold them with my hands.

I'm asking because I've injured both my hands at various points, and thought they improve, they never seem to fully heal (I believe they're strained tendons).

I'm wondering if I can get away with continuing to do my arm exercises without needing to grip with my hands, thereby allowing them to heal? I thought there might be some sort of velcro strap I could use (I could probably make my own if necessary).

A question about python environments

CachyOS

In order to run my 3D printer from a USB port, I use an application called Printrun/Pronterface. It requires Python.

I'm not terribly familiar with Python, as far as I know it's a programming language, but seems to have tools associated with it.

Part of the process for connecting to my printer is running the following commands:

python -m venv venv

source venv/bin/activate

My understanding is that this creates a virtual environment that prevents conflicts (it's highly recommended by the developers). I then run Pronterface from within that.

My question is about permissions in and out of the virtual environment with regards to my USB port. I have to use chmod in order to allow the application to access the USB port, but it seems like I have to do it every time. When I was using Mint, I didn't.

I'm wondering: do I have to use chmod before activating the virtual environment, after, or does it even matter? Also, should the chmod change not be permanent if I do it before turning on the virtual environment?

The command I'm using is

sudo chmod 777 /dev/ttyACM0

Yet again Telus rewards decades of loyalty with abuse.

I've been getting phone calls from Telus for a few years now. They're always when I'm at work or when I'm driving home, so I can't answer them. They never leave a voicemail, and I'm not spending my time calling them back.

A few weeks ago I had a day off and was finally able to answer the call. Of course, they were trying to sell me a new plan. I asked them to put me on the no-call list. The agent said they would, but it would only last for four months (this was no more than a month ago).

I just received another call (I happened to be on the phone with the police after some meathead in an obnoxious pickup truck threw something at my car). I decided I'd had enough and called back to find out what they wanted. I'll give you three guesses.

I told him more forcefully this time that I don't want sales calls. This time he said I would be on the no-call list for three years and thirteen days. I don't believe a word of it, but we'll see.

I've been a customer for over twenty years, since the clearnet PCS days. You'd think that might earn me a little basic compliance.

I am so sick and tired of garbage, exploitative corporations imposing their will on the very people who make their existence possible. The worst part is, there's nothing I can do except switch providers. I'm sure it won't help because I bet everyone else behaves the same way.

Still, I'm not going to reward Telus with my continued business, au revoir, I'm off to give my money to someone else. I'm not one of the lemmings, pestering me is only going to make me dig my heels in.

Some questions from a novice regarding the recent AUR problems.

I read the post about the infected AUR packages and I'm going to try investigating. I'm hoping some folks with some Linux kung fu might answer a few questions for me (and perhaps help others at the same time).

  1. There was a script posted that's supposed to show if I've downloaded any of the suspect packages recently. If I can't trust the packages, how can I trust the script is safe? I assume the answer is that I can't necessarily.

  2. I did attempt to install an AUR package a few days ago via Shelly (I can't remember what it was), but it failed due to an error (404 I think). If a package fails to install in this way, is there still a risk of infection?

  3. Are there logs for Shelly/AUR that I can peruse to help me investigate? If so, where are they stored?

  4. When I do the Cachy updates, I always choose to remove orphan packages. Is there any chance that's protected me from infection?

A couple of examples of things we see here regularly.

I was just driving home from work on the highway, it wasn't busy, just normal late-morning traffic. Plenty of space, no slow-downs. I ran into a couple of examples of things we see on this sub, so I though I'd share them.

  1. Tailgating: As usual, I'm in the right lane doing the speed limit and everyone else is passing me. About ten kilometers up the road, three of the vehicles that passed me earlier are stopped in the passing lane, they've rear-ended each other. There's usually a little slow-down at this spot due to traffic merging from another highway, but still not that significant at this time of day. Zero reason for this.

  2. Being courteous: Then, I get off the highway and am waiting in the center turning lane to turn left into a side street from a main city street. A large box truck is approaching me heading in the opposite direction. He decided to stop and flash his lights, telling me I could go. I did not go, I simply shook my head until he proceeded. He has the right of way, he should be taking the right of way.

People simply aren't getting the concepts drilled into their heads well enough when learning. We need to be repeating them ad nauseum I guess.

Why do package targets return 404 errors so often?

I will often (30% of the time) run into a 404 error when installing a package via the package manager (I've used Debian and Arch repositories so far). The process will start, but the manager can't find the package at the destination. Here's an example:

error: failed retrieving file 'nlopt-2.10.1-1.1-x86_64_v4.pkg.tar.zst.sig' from mirror5.krfoss.org : The requested URL returned error: 404

I can only think of two reasons this would happen: someone has forgotten to update the name of the destination when a package is changed (so the client is requesting something that doesn't actually exist), or whatever server the package resides on is not online.

Is it usually that simple?
