I live near Fargo and I’ve been wanting to take a trip on the western half of the Empire Builder. Seattle sounds fun, but I don’t want to take air travel right now, so I’d want something where the trip back on the train is shorter than that. Somewhere where it would be fun/interesting to spend 2-4 days.

Hard mode: I don’t drive (long story) so it should be a city/town with some rideshare access. Bonus points if it has public transit, even if the transit is shitty.

34 year old trans guy here; almost two years on T, 6 months post top surgery, still have a fuckass high voice but I seem to mostly pass or people at least seem satisfied with the explanation that I am a guy with a high voice. I live in Minnesota, but a smallish town in the western part of the state.

I’m a special ed para and if I may brag a little - I’m damn good at it. I started as a long-term sub mid last school year, and got hired as a permanent para at the same school this coming school year. Apparently they loved me and thought I was excellent at it. I’ve been wanting to become a special ed teacher and everyone I’ve talked to is genuinely excited when I tell them that. I plan to go back for my M.Ed in special ed in fall 2027, though I might sooner.

I mentioned this to the HR person in my district, when I was at head office getting my stuff updated from my name change, and I mentioned getting a sub teaching license soon and planning to go back for my M.Ed. She mentioned Minnesota also has something called a tier 1 license you can get with a job offer and a bachelor’s degree in anything. I mentioned seeing some teaching job postings, and despite her knowing 100% of my gender business (lol) she encouraged me to apply.

So, I applied for an ASD teacher job (that along with SLD is kind of my wheelhouse) at the school my son will be at in the fall.

I got an email back asking for an interview within TWO HOURS of applying.

My interview is on Monday. I don’t expect to get it, but I’m thrilled.

However most of the other trans people I’ve talked to said they’ve never known any trans people who were able to become teachers and able to stay in that field without constant harassment. 😬

Are there any success stories here or are they right? The idea of teaching gets me pumped and the people who I work for seem to think I have serious potential, but what other people have said about being a trans teacher gives me slight pause.

I’m an elementary school special ed para (hoping to eventually be a special ed teacher.) I normally work with neurodivergent kids who are verbal but have some learning needs, but I have a summer job at extended school year, so it tends to be mostly higher-needs kids who will regress without the additional school. One of the kids I’m working with is a 6-year-old who has really high needs, I think it’s an IDD/autism combo. Totally nonverbal, no AAC use yet, knows maybe 2-3 signs, hard to get her to sit and complete or pay attention to anything, hard to decipher what she actually likes or is interested in, hits and bites when she’s mad.

So far our routine has been, we try to get her to do little puzzles or similar tasks, then we have a motor break - typically using this platform swing in the sensory room, then she jumps on the little trampoline, then we go for a walk around the school with her on this adaptive trike thing.

Long story short, somewhere in there I was shuffling through my Spotify to see if there was any music she vibed with, and she was neutral on a few things… but she IMMEDIATELY loved “I Love You, I’m Sorry”.

And then she loved a bunch of the other Gracie songs I showed her.

I’m not exaggerating when I say: the only times I’ve seen her smile or laugh so far (instead of looking neutral or annoyed) is when Gracie’s music is on.

If I play “I Love You, I’m Sorry”, she stays on the swing for the whole song. (If that song isn’t on, she’s done in 15 seconds, haha.)

I actually showed her how to hit the plus sign on Spotify on my phone if she likes a song and she did 🥹 for a few songs now.

It’s also so charming because like, that feels so on brand for a 6 year old girl in 2026? Like of course, girl. Of course you love Gracie Abrams.

A friend of mine recently died after a 6 year battle with cancer. She was someone who always truly lived life to the fullest, like even long before her diagnosis she was always doing all the fun and interesting things that it seemed like everyone talked about but few people did. We went to arts camp together as teens and kept in touch for nearly 20 years. Because she was one of my original theater kid friends, the song “Long Live” really reminds me of her.

Do you know of any songs with a similar message and feeling? Maybe a bit bittersweet but not sad, something that says “you lived life to the fullest, we had a great time together, we made amazing memories, something is coming to a close but we made the most of the time we had.”

Any genre works, but I especially like country, folk/americana type stuff, pop, rock (especially classic rock type stuff), indie, some pop punk.
