Like let’s say someone is writing a fantasy series and the long-term goal isn’t just “publish a book,” but eventually build something that could grow into a major franchise (movies/TV/streaming/etc.). What are the actual steps today?

Do authors usually:

• self-publish first and build an audience online?

• try to get a literary agent?

• pitch directly to publishing houses?

• grow on TikTok/BookTok before the book even comes out?

• post chapters online somewhere first?

• need a completed manuscript before anyone takes you seriously?

And how realistic is it for a first-time author to land a real publishing deal with a company like Penguin Random House or similar if they don’t already have a name in the author world?

• entertainment/media

Not in the traditional huge retainer/client dynamic, but more of a “grow together” relationship where both sides genuinely believe in each other long-term as the person’s career/platform grows.
