So like… is Nessarose supposed to be… (TW: Nazis)

so I finally watched part two on Netflix, and something struck me hard. the animal and munchkin travel ban than Nessarose enacted as Madam Governor. it specifically reminded of the early parts of Schindlers List, when the Nazis were rounding Jews into the ghettos, forcing them to carry certain papers (and obviously this happened irl as well, Schindler’s List is just kinda recent memory for me due to watching it in class at the end of last school year). Is this intentional at all or am i over analyzin?

Something is living in Michigans U.P

My name's Jon, and I’m a game warden up in the upper peninsula. I know, I know, rotten work, but someone has to do it, and it’s only vaguely relevant here as I was taking my PTO before they reset at the start of the year. I am honestly a bit nervous to post this here, but here goes nothing. I’m about an hour and a half from the nearest town without snow. With it? Good luck, you aren’t getting to me till it melts. That’s typically why I like it. Being in my line of work, you’ll see some weird stuff. Moonshiners, weird hiding spots, abandoned boats on sunny days. Some of it even seems unexplainable the first time ya see it, stuff like deer standing on hind legs ans not responding to noise, I've even heard of deer being completely stunned towards the tree line, a whole herd. But that’s all explainable by some form of CWD or predators in the trees or something. But nothing can explain what happened to me 2 winters ago.

I live alone. Not necessarily because I like it, it’s just hard to maintain relationships with long hours like I work, and it’s not exactly like the area where I live is booming with people. And besides, it is rather peaceful, late nights, out on the porch with some coffee, just watching the snow. At least, it should be, and typically is. But it wasn’t, not this night. From the tree line, I heard something. A whistle. Not like a plastic one, but the sort that one does with just their mouth. It was a tune I knew from childhood; “a hunting we will go, a hunting we will go…” I’m sure you all know the rest. But then, right when the melody should have concluded, where the words would’ve been “and then we’ll let him go”… it stopped.

In the beginning, before it stopped, I had simply thought it was poachers coming onto my land. Not unheard of, and it was deer season, even if it was both illegal to hunt this late and on private property without permission. But when it stopped, I felt my blood run cold. I decided to go to bed for the night, hoping maybe I’d just imagined things, and that in the morning I’d realize I’m being silly. I threw some wood in the wood stove, put my rifle next to my bed, locked my doors and windows, and curled up in my bed for the night. It was not a particularly restful sleep, but better than none at all. The next morning, with my rifle slung over my shoulder, I decided to check out the rough area of the woods that I thought I’d heard the whistling from. While I didn’t find any person or monster or even footprints, I did find a deer. And I… kept finding the deer. The first part I found was a foreleg, laid irreverently in the snow. Then, what looked like a good chunk of its innards in the trees, so on and so forth. I think by the end of it, I’d found all of it, including its head bashed against a tree, blood and brains frozen onto it. I almost threw up. That has never happened to me, in all my years working in the field I do. Whatever had done that was too brutal to be human. But if it were an animal, it wouldn’t have left it to rot. After seeing this, I’d decided that I didn’t like how any of this looked or felt, and to go back to my cabin.

That night, I sat out on my porch again, drinking my coffee again. But this time, I had my hunting rifle on my lap, on edge, watching the tree line. Then I saw it. The slightest bit of movement. It was so thin and dangly that, if it hadn’t moved, I would’ve thought it simply to be a couple of younger trees. But it did move. It moved through the tree line, never leaving, never quite showing itself fully. But I could make some details out. Its limbs were long and thin, its rib cage sunken, and under the moon I could see red down its chest, its skin an ashy white. It was fast, too fast for something that tall and lanky.

And then I heard it sing.

This was not a whistle, it was singing. But the singing was not soft or beautiful. It sounded like something trying and failing to do an impression of a human. It was low, scratchy, gravelly , and almost sounded painful.

“A hunting we will go, a hunting we will go…”

And yet again, it cut off right before “and then we’ll let him go”.

I raised up my rifle, slowly brought the scope to my eye, my whole body shivering as I did. I aimed at where its heart should have been, wrapped my finger around the trigger, and took the shot. First the bang, and then the wail. That awful, awful wail. I still hear it when I try to sleep most nights. But what I saw next made me feel an even greater terror: it did not bleed. Despite the wailing, despite the fact that that shot should have killed that thing, it did not die, and it did not bleed. Instead, it looked right at me, and I finally got a look at its face.

Its neck was thick, unusually so, its gaping maw wide and dripping with red. Its eyes were wide and round like dinner plates. And it just stared at me, chest heaving, not moving. And I stared back. We just stared at each other for a long time. Until, the first bit of the sun began to creep over the tree line. In almost an instant, it dropped onto all fours, and disappeared back into the trees.

After that, I’d decided that whatever this is, it was worth a call to my local sheriffs department. I don’t know what I expected them to be able to do if this thing shrugged off 2 rounds of 45-70 like it was nothing. Unfortunately, as it turns out, this plan would be impossible to carry out. The harsh snows had knocked out my power. This normally wouldn’t be an issue, I have a back up generator and plenty of fuel. At least, I had a back up generator. But when I went to go check on it, see what the issue was… it was ripped to pieces, gashes through the metal, pieces thrown all over. Whatever this thing was, I’d pissed it off, and it didn’t want me to leave.  And, based on the fact that the snow keeps coming all winter long, and doesn’t really melt till spring, it was gonna get its wish for some time.

So instead, I prepared. I put bear traps out by the tree line, hoping to at least make it harder for this thing to move. Although, I’m 95% sure it knew exactly where I was, what I was doing, and was watching me at that moment. I couldn’t see it, but I could feel it, watching me.

After I set up the traps, I decided to take some inspiration from all those horror movies, and put salt at every entrance of the house, and grabbed my lighter, along with some old hair spray I had laying around under my bathroom sink, along with my 45-70, and waited. I knew it wouldn’t be out till nightfall.

As night fell, I heard it again. But this time, it was clearer, less strained, almost beautiful if not so disturbing.

“A hunting we will go, a hunting we will go…”

And yet again, it stopped before the line “and then we’ll let him go.”

Suddenly, for some stupid reason, I yelled out: “THEN COME AT ME YOU BASTARD! STOP PUSSYFOOTING AROUND AND TRYING TO SCARE ME AND COME FUCKING GET ME!”

Needless to say, that was incredibly stupid. It moved so, so fast. There was 200 yards between me and it, and yet, it was on me in less than 10 seconds. I’d managed to get a couple rounds into its head, but it wasn’t enough. I retreated inside, but it was breaking through the door, pulling itself through. I truly felt like I was going to die in that cabin. But I was not going to die to this thing. I refused to due to it.

With quivering hands, I lifted up my lighter and the spray, and began to spray, sending fire at it and at my door and wall. It recoiled with a shriek, and through the hole in the door I could see it convulse as it caught like dry brush.

My house was mostly fine, but it definitely needed some repairs. The next morning, when I emerged, it was gone. I don’t know if it was dead, but it wasn’t at my house anymore, and I haven’t heard that god damn singing since. Maybe it died in the woods somewhere, maybe it moved on. Either way, I don’t like going out at night anymore, at least not past where the light of my house can reach.

Why are people so against the culling of feral horses?

America has had feral horses for a long time because of the same reason as many invasive species: irresponsible owners. while yes Equus evolved from North America, they went extinct thousands of years ago, and their niche was filled by other large herbivores (deer, elk, bison, moose, etc). There simply isn’t a feasible reality it seems where feral horses like mustangs get to continue to roam freely without human intervention, and it doesn’t impact other large herbivores that fulfill the same niche. They are beautiful animals, but they are invasive, destructive animals as well. They chase native animals away from water, compete with native species for food, and destabilize soil. So why are so many self proclaimed nature lovers so against the culling of wild horses?

Why is it some large cities don’t have chapters, while smaller cities do?

hi all, I’m 17, soon to be 18, and thinking of joining the IWW due to a mixture of very bad experiences with managers and my personal politics. But while looking at the chapters, I noticed that there is not a single chapter in my closest city. In fact, there isn’t one in my state at all, with the closest one being 200 miles away in bloomington. Now, Saint Louis isn’t a huge city, but it is bigger than pittsburgh or Bloomington. So why do some larger cities not have chapters? Is there any way we can help fix this and improve membership in these areas?

Since we’re sharing bad experiences with punk rockers, I wanna hear some good ones too

honestly, I just wanna hear some fun stories from people who had great experiences with punk rockers. I’ll go first. it was my first ever punk show, period. more specifically, folk punk. it was a little over a year ago now, maybe a year and a half ago. specifically, it was Apes of the State, opened by Sister Wife Sex Strike and Little Foot. now, I didn’t get to meet April or any other members of Apes of the state, and while I did manage to get my CD signed by Moss and Pigeon, they didn’t have time to talk. Little Foot, however, is an absolutely great dude. we talked for a few minutes between sets, talked about music and school, he signed my shirt, and i still occasionally talk to him on insta. so now, I wanna hear your awesome stories

To those of you who chose this life, wether it be to escape abuse, be free from work, or whatever, was it worth it?

I’m going to be honest, I’ve been considering going down to the union station in St. Louis and hopping trains west till I end up somewhere in the coast like some of the folk punks I’ve met at shows and such (of course, they didn’t end up at the west coast at that time, they were in Saint Louis). I’m tired of working a job I hate, I’m tired of my bigoted transphobic parents, I’m tired of the small town with nothing but corn and suburbs. I just wanna escape. But I also know that, considering my luck and lack of skill talent or street smarts, I’d probably die within 2 weeks. So, to those who chose this life rather than were forced into it by bad circumstances or born into it, is it worth it? Do you ever regret choosing to do this? Sorry if this falls under oogle shit I’m gonna be honest idk what even defines an oogle at this point beyond “pretends to be homeless or to have lived through difficulty but hasnt”. Please remove if it does fall under such

What is the most bullshit sounding “fact” you’ve heard: I’ll go first

I wanna start by saying, I’m a believer. but you gotta admit, some of the stuff people say is kinda crazy. for example, in watching Bigfoot, Matt moneymaker tried to claim that they can make their eyes glow.

edit: guess that’s apparently a common thing? Tbh I’m surprised. I just disregarded it as BS because it doesn’t occur in any other known mammal species

Finding a place to stay as a prospective student?

hi all! I’m considering moving to california to go to Cal.Poly. Humboldt for forestry. Issue is, I wanna get in state tuition, so I’d have to move there for a year to get the cheaper in state tuition. any ideas on finding housing when you’re both very young (so less appealing to slightly older renters) but also not a student? thanks!

Is there much of an LGBTQ, especially lesbian and/or trans people/presence in the city?

hi all! I’m a trans sapphic woman who is currently 17 and entering her senior year, and considering Missouri for college to get a degree in natural resource management. I know Columbia is a safe haven city, but idk A. how well that translates when it sits in the middle of one of the single most transphobic states in the country, and B. how well it translates to actual peopl and presence. so I’m curious, is there a large lgbtqia+ scene and , or no? Ive only ever been for a few hours at a time ( both times for concerts), and most of the people from said concerts were traveling from St Louis based on the cheers when that question came up, so I don’t really know. Thank you in advance

Rural gothic horror novels, ideally (but not a deal breaker if not) set in the Midwest?

hey all! I’m currently reading The Bog Wife by Kay Chronister, and I’m enjoying it. It has a sense of unease which I tend to like in my horror. I also generally like rural/folk gothic horror. But I’ve noticed that a lot of it is set in the south ans Appalachia (which does of course make sense, considering the regions history of extreme religious zealotry, slavery, and brutal repression of labor unions), and while I do love that, I want something that hits a bit closer to home, aka, the Midwest fir me. I feel like there’s a lot of potential here. the rows and rows of crops, especially corn, soybeans, and wheat; the large swathes of forested areas; the large hunting culture; the similar religious zealotry to the south. I just feel like it’s a perfect back drop for gothic horror novels, so I gotta know if any of y’all’s have any recommendations?

Advice for walking 3 miles in 45 minutes with 45lbs strapped to me?

hi all, I’m currently taking the online courses to become S130, L180, and S190 certified, but there is a real life portion you have to take. And part of that is taking the pack test. essentially, it’s split up into 3 parts, being 16 minute mile with no weight, 30 minute mile with 25lbs, and 45 minutes 3 miles with 45lbs. now, I am capable of walking at roughly 4 miles an hour. I’d say my average walking speed is between 3 and 3.5 miles, so while a bit uncomfortable, it’s doable. Adding the weight is what I’m worried about. I am currently training to lose fat and gain muscle, but I’m still not confident in my ability to even hold that weight for 45 minutes let alone walk at a consistent pace with it. During the fall I plan on practicing at my schools track, but do you have any advice?

edit in case if yalls are wondering what those certifications are: they are wildfire fighting certifications, s130 is firefighter training, l180 is human factors in wild land fire service, and s190 is intro to wildfire behavior

Ways to convince my parents to not hate the idea of me going into forestry?

hey all! I’m hoping to go into forestry, and am considering schools like Mizzou, SIUC, MTU, Oregon State, Cal Poly Humboldt, U of Maine, etc. i have decent grades (3.1 GPA with hopefully a chance to raise it my senior year), can skip most if not all of us history and government thanks to AP exams, I got an above average ACT score of 29, overall I’m doin pretty decent for myself and the future career I want. and I *know* I want it. three things that I love are feeling like I’m making a difference, hiking, and the woods, and this is a job that combines all three. Issue is that my parents don’t think it’s a good idea to major in forestry. My dad is trying to push me towards trades because that’s what he does and it’s relatively AI proof, and my step mom things I should major in wildlife ecology, that I’m not built to work outside (due to not typically doing well with heat), and that a forestry major won’t get you any jobs besides those you wouldn’t need a degree for like tree trimmer. but here’s the thing: I dont want to go into trades for reasons I won’t discuss (largely as I can’t safely discuss them with my dad, lord knows I’ve tried, so it doesn’t really matter), and quite frankly I feel like a lot of environmental science or ecology and evolutionary biology jobs would lead to too much desk and lab work, which I don’t want, and environmental ecology jobs ive heard get paid in “sunrises and granola bars”. I want to be outside, I want to be in the sun even if I’m hot (plus thanks to working in a kitchen ive gotten quite used to it), and I just like, know it’s not true that a forestry degree is useless and that there are jobs that require it, but she just doesn’t believe me on that. now, I don’t plan to rely on them for financial help, instead planning on getting a mixture of scholarships, federal aid, private loans, and work (I’m hoping to get a seasonal job with the USFS or NPS next summer, lord willing the river don’t rise, and currently have a job as a fry cook where I make 15$ an hour). but I’d like to at least have them be tolerant of the idea so I don’t have to deal with the nagging constantly. So, do You have any advice for getting them behind the idea? Did any of you go through similar stuff? If so, how, if at all, did you get them behind your idea?

What’s the minimum you’d feel comfortable spending on a used car or truck?

Hey all, I’m currently an incoming senior in high school and work on weekends. I make 15 an hour and work 14 hours a week most weeks. Currently I have 1400 saved up and no car. I had an old beat up 1997 Chevy Cavalier, but accidentally wrecked it, and now I don’t get a new car unless I buy it myself. Looking on marketplace, every car or truck I see in My area with my current savings either seems to good to be true or needs to have almost everything replaced. so what is the minimum you’d be willing to spend on a used car? I’m willing to put some work into it as long as the repairs aren’t too costly or difficult, but would prefer it at least be drivable so I can stop carpooling

Any folk punks in Saint Louis ever wanna jam?

honestly, I’m just looking for jam mates near me, and I live too far from the actual city itself (I’m in Ofallon) for it to be easy to go to open mic nights regularly and pray. so, anyone in here around/in Saint Louis and wanna jam? I’m a banjo player and can “sing”, and I’m cool to jam with anyone as long as you aren’t too much of a dick lol (aka just don’t be a bigot or mean for no reason)

Things to get for an easy to hide/put away/ set up quickly altar?

Hey all, I’m a pagan who primarily follows Freya and Freyr. I have been for a very, very long time (especially Freya). As such, I HAD an altar for quite a while. Unfortunately, my mom’s boyfriend threw it all away just to spite me, leaving me with essentially a big chunk If rose quartz, a drum, and some runes. I used to have a large wooden box that worked as the altar itself, 2 7 day prayer candles, some herbs, etc. I’d like to start over, but make something easy to hide and put away, especially as I will be going to college as well. Any ideas?
