Does anybody know who designed the sapling mascot?

Does anybody know who designed the sapling mascot? The plushie merch for example says designed by Fauna but I'm not sure if that refers to the merch item itself or to the sapling design overall. I didn't discover Fauna until after quite a while so I'm not that knowledgeable

Looking to get into rings, plain and steel to start with - good places to look?

Pretty much as the post title says, I've never shopped for or worn rings before. So I'm looking to start with something affordable and simple, steel is my go-to for now, with a natural steel colour or possibly black and with a plain design.

Would you guys recommend any particular places to look? I could go to a Westfield jeweller's or perhaps department store but I'm not sure if that's really the best place given the sort of markups they can be capable of vs the quality. Maybe Etsy?

I already know my sizing and would be okay with buying without trying in person. Cheers

Does this ring look masculine, feminine, or quite unisex to you?

I'm quite new to rings so I was wondering whether it looks masculine, feminine, or quite unisex.

I'm not looking for reassurance and more so general knowledge or feel. I think I'd be more or less comfortable whatever the answer is since I've become a lot less self-conscious thankfully, but I'd like to know about what the heck I'm wearing first. My hope is that actually it's fairly unisex, I don't want something overly masculine or overly chunky, hopefully it counts as unisex or as versatile.

If particularly wanted I can share the name and brand but actually I know the brand itself definitely does lean one way, I just wanted to get an assessment of the ring itself without that factor being involved, hopefully that makes sense.

Does someone have a record or a memory of the names of Fauna's channel emotes?

We have Fauna's emotes saved here on the wiki: https://hololive.wiki/wiki/Category:Emotes_-_Ceres_Fauna

But is there a sapling out there who can help me with the names of what these emotes were called on her channel? Something like :FaunaFlushed: and so on. I would really really appreciate it, I don't want this to be lost forever, I can't find any record of it and I'm shocked that I can't remember much already :FaunaCry:

My successful experience getting Minecraft working with Intel HD 3000 GPU, Windows 10 64-bit

Hi, I'd like to share my experience and what I got to work. This thread was key:

https://github.com/LWJGL/lwjgl/issues/119

I would like to share my experience. I was trying to get the best Minecraft possible out of a Windows 10 64-bit Lenovo B580 with Intel HD 3000 GPU, hardware which is capable of only up to OpenGL 3.1. In the end, I got MC 1.21.4 with 30-ish FPS working, not too bad.

Of course, with the latest GPU driver that Microsoft released, it does not properly support OpenGL 3.1 with some applications including later Minecraft versions. I spent many hours troubleshooting this because Minecraft kept reporting a lack of OpenGL support. The only thing that worked was using an old version of Minecraft before they switched from OpenGL 2.x to OpenGL 3.2, but I didn't want to be stuck on that old version.

Things which did NOT work: custom drivers, nor the shim fix posted, nor relying on the Minecraft mod ForceGL2.0 without that being used in conjunction with the fix I describe below. I don't know why, the shim fix in particular is supposed to be tailor made for my situation but it just did not work. I tried so many combinations of these, different MC versions, Java versions, and so on. In the end, what worked was:

STEP 1 using the latest GPU driver that Microsoft released which was obtained via Windows Update.

You can also download from Microsoft, the one released in 2016 and for 64-bit systems, it is the 99MB one and not the other one. There is another download which has exactly the same description and release date and version etc, not sure what the difference is, but they are definitely different files. The 99MB download also contains a .cab within a .cab, two sets of driver files, each of which again have the same description etc, and each of those are different too, so in total there are 3 identically labelled but actually different versions from Microsoft. I don't know what's up with that. I stuck with the one obtained via Windows Update, which corresponds to the .cab that is nested within the other .cab from the 99MB download.

STEP 2 is download Marcinosoft's patcher program from github above, make sure to download the latest one and not the one posted earlier which has a bug and does not patch 64-bit OS drivers properly, don't be like me and get stuck with that problem. It is indeed flagged as virus-like, but I believe it is safe if you read the reasons above, that they are a few bytes' difference from official versions, et cetera.

STEP 3 run the patcher, it should replace both ig4icd32.dll and ig4icd64.dll, and in your system32 and syswow64 directories you should see the DLLs and each should be have a modified date of just now as opposed to years ago, if all worked smoothly.

STEP 4 install Minecraft, install Fabric for Minecraft 1.21.4, install the mod ForceGL2.0 using a version compatible with MC 1.21.4 and Fabric (I used the latest 1.21.4-compatible version which is from Github which is 3.0.0-beta2 but you probably can also use 2.x versions from Github/Curseforge/Modrinth), install ForceGL2.0 dependencies (Fabric API, Yet Another Config Lib)

Now you will be able to play! Please note I tested with things like Forge, it did not work. The ForceGL mod does not work with Minecraft versions past 1.21.4 despite mod downloads being nominally available for them, those ones might work on a select few systems as per the mod author's words, certainly didn't work for me.

For performance I also ended up using the mods Lithium, More Culling, FerriteCore, Entity Culling, Enhanced Block Entities, C2ME, Bad Optimizations, and one of those required Cloth Config as a dependency so that too. Sodium caused crashing upon loading a world so I left that out. Settings-wise, I turned ForceGL2.0's preferred OpenGL version to 3.0 (minor version control to allow moving to 3.1 does not exist in any ForceGL version for 1.21.4), render distance to 6 chunks, simulation distance to 5 chunks (minimum), and every other setting to minimum/fast. RAM allocation remained at 2GB default, this computer has only 4GB RAM. Perhaps I could get a higher frame rate by running MC in a small resolution and using Magpie to upscale, not sure.

In terms of other weird program behaviour, I also have a problem where Steam flashes black and some elements are invisible. Oddly that was not fixed even once the driver was patched and even after applying the shim fix, I just had to disable hardware accelerated web views in Settings -> Interface. I had a problem where Realtech VR OpenGL Extensions Viewer's OpenGL performance test just crashed the program, this continued even after driver patching and even when set to test just OpenGL 3.0, I think it's just the program being weird. I had a problem where AIDA64Extreme reported an HD 3000 on the first page, but under OpenGL information it reported only the Microsoft GDI default driver which supports only OpenGL 1.0, this was fixed after driver patching following which the OpenGL information reported the HD 3000 and OpenGL support to 3.1.

I spent a ridiculous amount of time but I call this victory.

There are other possible methods which could work which I did not pursue: using Mesa3D to use CPU to do all OpenGL stuff, so no need for GPU or driver which supports high versions of OpenGL, downside is GPU is not used at all so I thought it'd be laggy. But I've seen others report success this way. Or, using Linux which has working drivers for HD 3000 which go up to OpenGL 3.3.

Does any other strategy game use maps with textures included in the map file itself, rather than loading textures from what's contained in the core game files?

My understanding is that with BAR, each map contains its own texture file, which means that a mapmaker has an incredible amount of freedom with how they would like the map to look. There's no need to rely on the set of assets already in the core game files.

Unfortunately it also contributes to the file size, which still is insignificant for each individual map but the whole BAR map pack is a sizable download.

This is not the case with other strategy game map making that I know of, eg Command & Conquer games, WarCraft III (I think), and so forth. In those, you just use whatever textures the game files already contain, you're basically including instructions on what textures to load rather than including the textures themselves. So a C&C Generals map is 400 KB only, for example.

Does anyone know of other games which use BAR's style? I'm not sure how other Spring/Recoil engine games do it.

Jonathan Ferguson of the Royal Armouries Museum is reminded of C&C minigunners, saying this weapon from Trepang2 fits the bill quite well - and I agree, having this sort of thing in Renegade would have been sweet indeed

For context, Jonathan Ferguson is a well-known firearms expert and is the Keeper of Firearms & Artillery at the Royal Armouries Museum in the UK, he's been featured in many YouTube videos too, not your average guntuber. The concept of a handheld minigun, especially one you can hold from the shoulder like in Tiberian Dawn, has always been a bit odd but perhaps is a semi-viable and cool example of one.

This is from a recent video titled "Firearms Expert Reacts to Trepang² Guns | EXP": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-SfRR0Yvs7c

(Trepang² is a great game too which I'd recommend, especially if you loved games like FEAR or Black for the PS2 or Wolfenstein The New Colossus)

Dokibird and concert appreciation thread from a non-Dragoon

It was so good! I have always liked Dokibird and am subscribed to her channel but don't have time to tune in often at all. But I tuned into the concert because it featured so many vtubers I'm a fan of!

I really appreciate her cheerfulness, giggles, how she really cares for her friends and especially the sweet relationship her and Shachi have, and the way she says "oh mah gahd".

As a millenial and a fan of rock, the song selection is like it was tailored for me. The nostalgia! And it was amazing seeing her outfits, the white crop top with loose red tie in particular was just perfect.

Happy birthday Dokibird! Yay!!

[CK2] How much does disease spread between characters, outside of provinces being infected?

In CK 2, is it possible and to what extent do infectious diseases spread between characters when there's no province epidemic going on?

I used to think that having a character with consumption (tuberculosis) would spread it throughout the court, STDs like lover's pox and Aztec Plague (syphilis) would spread between lovers, and so on. That makes sense.

But to be honest, I've never noticed it happening. This is especially apparent with the Flu which is common of course but I haven't noticed it breaking out in court-wide episodes.

I know if you're in seclusion and don't kick out a diseased courtier, the disease probably spreads in that case, but that might well be a specially coded case and I'm curious about examples other than that situation.

Is somebody able to shed more light on this?

I've checked in the file 00_diseases.txt and there's nothing in there which clearly points to transmission between characters, I believe the "contagiousness" denotes how much it spreads between provinces. And for example the has_tuberculosis trait doesn't point to anything like that either.

Nimi has always been pretty worldly especially for a vtuber. Chibi Nimi on the other hand... bless her!

So many great moments from this very unique game, really enjoyed this stream! (I'm a VOD watcher okay, I'm trying to catch up :nimiCry:)

Your most loved units/structures

What are your most loved units/structures in BAR? They don't have to be good or even that useful, though of course that helps. It doesn't necessarily have to be that T1 unit you spam heaps of because it's useful, it could be something you build just for fun. What matters is that you like them a lot!

For me a lot of the Core T3s are just amazing. The Catapult's rocket spam and Mad Cat style design is super fun, the Juggernaut is of course really cool and its laser screech sounds amazing, and I also love the flamethrower units Fiend and Demon. Fire is cooler than lightning, sorry Arm.

Arm does have the Liche bomber though which is really fun and devastating, they also have the nicer looking of the T3 rapid fire artillery (Ragnarok) which is always nice when it gets going.

I wish we had voiced unit responses to give units more personality, that would be great

Waxing nostalgic about Total Annihilation

I do love Beyond All Reason and it captures much of the gameplay of Total Annihilation, it's a great game for sure and I play it a lot. I want to talk about a few of the things I still miss from Total Annihilation.

The idea of patterning, with humanity opting to upload everyone's consciousness into machines, and the resistance (Arm) splitting from the Core in rebellion against that idea. OTA's lore is not super fleshed out, but the idea of patterning and the rebellion is still interesting to me.

So is the idea of a truly, truly forever war. Not even 40K's idea of "there is only war" reaches that level, because in 40K some individual relationships might still change between war to truce, maybe rarely alliances/temporary partnerships, or simply to non-interaction for a while, even if there is always war going on in general. OTA had a simple, compelling premise of a war that has just two sides, no complications or third parties, no diplomacy, no quarter, and no current motivation to fight other than to simply win - a combination of complacency, hatred and vindictiveness, the innate human desire (or posthuman) desire for triumph, and the desire to address mortal fear through achieving a permanent and absolute guarantee of security from a threat - through its annihilation.

Tell me if there's stories out there which are comparable! I'm sure they're not that rare, but I just haven't found any personally with the totality and longevity of OTA's war.

Personally, I don't mind moderately bright colours as seen in OTA, Red Alert 2, Age of Empires, and so on. But units and structures being too "shiny" I think I dislike, as seen in Red Alert 3 and to a lesser extent Beyond All Reason. I like worn, battle-scarred stuff and OTA scratched more of that itch for me.

I miss OTA's sound effects. The thunder of a fully powered and fully spun up Vulcan is one of my fondest RTS memories.

And the main menu. It still lives rent-free, the heavy and cold feeling of OTA's menus and how the sound and feel of every menu press felt like slamming a portcullis shut, this deep metallic boom. So good!

Nimi announced as a special guest for the Doki Doki Rewind Time concert!

https://x.com/FRproductions/status/2065592784820777434

Dokibird is also joined by many other special guests: Dooby, Chibidoki, Shachi, Amalee, the Sloppy Sisters!

Streaming tickets I was wondering about, but as per a follow-up tweet: "Nimi will be part of our free streaming preview which will include the first 3 songs of the concert! More details about our PPV coming soon!" :naplingcheer:

Doki Doki Rewind Time is the third day of a three-day festival held by Fantastic Reality, the other two days are very interesting too, featuring big names like Matara Kan, kson, and Lilypichu on day 1, and day 2 is music-focused with even a special guest performance by Demondice! (Wow!)

A problem with aiming charged attacks (PC, M+keyboard)

When I am using charged power fist attacks or charged shield rushes, the game likes to snap my attack towards a particular and often nearest enemy. Often I don't want this to happen as you can see in the images above.

I'm on PC with mouse and keyboard, and not using the target lock features. The way I play is I hold my attack button to start charging, look in exactly the direction I wish my attack to be launched, hold W to "go there", and then release my attack button once ready. But I often end up attacking something quite to the side or sometimes even a minoris enemy which just feels terrible.

Is there any way around this, some different method of control or way to disable the auto targeting? Thanks.

Question re Remastered Edition music CDs vs in-game

I have got the collectors edition music CDs. Will I get alternate versions by extracting the songs from in-game or are they the same?

Back in the 90s, the TD and RA1 soundtrack CDs offered higher quality but sometimes different versions to what was contained in game. Also the track listings were sometimes different too.

Panorama of Red Alert by Qiang Zhou [attached thumbnail only, full interactive panorama is linked]

An interactive panorama by the Chinese artist Qiang Zhou, full view here. I've attached a tiny preview only to get people to see the quality of the art but the panorama itself contains way, way more than just that. I recommend fullscreen!

I wanted to share this incredible art, it's eight years old but I don't think that many people have seen it. Sadly I checked the artist's profile and there's no more C&C stuff that I saw.

China's love for Red Alert is quite special, a lot of amazing stuff has come from Chinese fans including the MCV deploy cinematics which are just jaw dropping.

Examples of three-wheeled technicals? (Aside from motorcycle+sidecar or scooters)

Visiting China in the 2010s and I think before that, I noticed a lot of three-wheeled trucks on the roads. I'm not talking scooters or anything where you can call the operator a rider, I mean small trucks with enclosed cab and a rear cargo area that can for example lift up to dump cargo on the ground. They are less common there nowadays.

Here's a photo of what I'm talking about: https://www.alamy.com/three-wheeler-truck-from-waw-on-streets-of-xian-china-image224997120.html

I saw some art recently of a post-apocalyptic three-wheeled truck technical, the artist is Chinese.

Has anyone ever seen a real technical based on this type of truck or any other three-wheeled designs that aren't scooter/motorbike types?
