Agkistrodon contortrix [Central Virginia, US]

We have lots of these on my little property, but usually not hanging out when I'm working (noisily) and the dogs are right with me, dropping balls for me to throw, but just now when I moved the ladder a few feet and had my hand right at the foot, checking that it was solid, I found this little guy, still as a stone. My hand was *right* there and my feet, both in flip-flops and barefoot to climb the ladder, had been walking right by for the past half hour. The dogs, who got ushered away immediately, never saw her. She was still "frozen" when I came back (dogs safely inside) to see if I could get a pic. What a cool little cucumber. I wonder how often she has been around without me knowing at all.

I'm going to give her a bit to move along; if she stays, I will spray her with a little water, for motivation.

She was patient with me, though. I can give her some time to head out now that the giant creatures are indoors.

Rec for RVA vets who do trachea collapse surgery?

Our vet (who we love) has said multiple times that there are no viable treatments for trachea collapse in dogs, but a search (out of desperation) says there are surgeries and bronchodilater meds that can help, so we are looking for a 2nd opinion. Given our vet's response, we are guessing it might be a procedure only some (maybe specialists?) are doing?

Snake entered into my Dad's police station.

Dad saw this dude crawling in from the door.

He immediately called the snake catcher.

He knew it was a rat snake but did not want to take any chance.

Bentonite wildlife ponds?

My pond site turns out to be on red clay for at least a foot and a half, once I dig down past about 8 - 10". I wonder if it would be a suitable site to use bentonite, but I have only seen bentonite used in larger, farm pond applications.

Has anyone used it for a smaller, wildlife type pond? 1500 - 2000 gal with a bog filter? What would be the potential benefits? Limitations? Thank you!

When she brags "I got spice!"

🎵🎶 When she brags, "I got spice!"

But you know she is nice,

It's a rat snake!

When she rattles her tail,

But you tell her, "threat fail!"

It's a rat snakesnake!🎵🎶

My doggos were telling me, "intruder, intruder" but it was just a resident derpster. I sent her on her way just outside the fence, trusting she will be back on rodent patrol later.

Pump location?

Planning my first little (~1600 g, including 2 pools, a bog filter, and waterfall) and I wonder if it matters if I position the main pump at the lowest point (in the lower pool), going up to the bog filter, or if the pump should be located up in the bog filter, drawing the water up from thr lower pool.

The total slope will be about 18" difference from outflow from the lower pool to the intake to the bog filter. The outflow from the bog filter is another 14" up, so the total "lift" for the water is 32".

The water will be flowing (gravity falling) from the bog filter, to the 1st pool, through a waterfall, then into the second pool, and back up to the bog filter (with the assistance of the pump.) Thank you!

Am I using it wrong?

I 💜 my dremel. I rarely go a week without using it from everything from plumbing repairs to craft projects. But why, regardless of how I hold it, do the sparks and/or chips fly right at me instead of away? I have sincerely wondered if I am somehow using it backwards because I can't figure out how to avoid it. Is there a dremel or dremel-like tool that rotates the other way? Is it just me?

What should I do to naturalize this?

The property i bought had this defunct hot tub that I want to make into a wild-as-possible little pond. I'm thinking maybe make some rock overhangs of the seats, maybe carve out holes and insert planters? Open to all ideas. It seems like a nice canvas to start with . . .

He got Colbert fired

But Trump will *never* be as beloved as Colbert is. He will never *matter* culturally as much as Colbert does. And he *knows that* because that is the only possible explanation for a *president* to go after a comedian.

Trump has been able to bully his way into changing many things, but like all bullies, he is weak, vulnerable and pathetic.

Colbert is beloved. And he is worth more than Trump and his whole following will ever be.

Are the bees thirsty?

Like many places in the US, we are having a drought here in Virginia. I have a decent amount of flowers (German chamomile just TOOK OFF) and some weeds that i haven't addeessed bc there is very little grass growing, but not many flowers (yet) that have nectar, like the honeysuckle that should bloom soon. I keep seeing increased bee activity after I water the flowers. Should I put out some sugar water, or are they happy drinking the water as is until the nectar is served?

Is this car totaled?

Left front quarter destroyed, airbag deployed, 40mph, rear ended a car that stopped dead in front.

So sad. I love my little pink car.

We had a great conversation about wasps last week, so I'm hoping this is allowed and of interest.

Yesterday, I was looking up at an oak tree and saw this weird, semi-tranlucent orb , about 4" wide, way up in the branches. I thought it might be an egg cluster but had never seen anything like it! It looks so alien, or like something that would be in the dark part of the sea!

I posted it in "What is It" and it turns out to be a Wool Sower Gall, caused by a cynipid gall wasp! They take like 2 years to form, and inside, baby wasps are pupating! How crazy is that? Sometimes I think Mother nature is truly tripping balls. Anyway, I just wanted to share. The baby waspies are safe in their alien looking nursery, and I now know more about wasps.

Edit: @RaineyKatz solved it! Wool Sower Gall! And apparently is is full of pupating wasps!

Looked up at my oak tree yesterday and there is a semi-translucent orb of some kind at the terminus of a small branch. It is about 4" across, creamy white with what look like divisions marked in very light pink with dark brown dots, leading me to think maybe an egg cluster of some kind?

▲ 13 r/Berries

This may seem like a silly question, but are mulberries tasty? Obviously, they are out of season now, or I would just go taste a few. I have seen several listings for trees, talking about their fruit, but the mulberries I remember growing up had hardly any taste at all. Are there good varieties that I just missed? They do seem to be very pretty. Thanks for your help!
