Hot take! Beast should not know how Cerebro works!

One of my biggest pet peeves when it comes to science in comic books is that no one is ever an expert in a specific field. They're just a "scientist" so the team can turn to them with any kind of scientific problem. Regardless of what that problem actually entails.

Which I think is boring and lame. It's way more fun when a character actually has an actually field of expertise. So for Beast that's biochemistry. His most well known scientific achievements are making himself blue and curing the legacy virus.

If you want an X-Man other than Xavier that knows how Cerebro works it should be someone like Kitty Pryde (who canonically was able to build a Cerebro that could work without a telepath as well as a miniaturised Cerebro) or a super engineer like Forge.

With X-Men United appearing to end at #10 and presumably another big relaunch coming for the X-Men around the same time what do you hope is next for Kitty afterwards?

Personally, I just hope we get to see her be a proper honest to god superhero again. It feels like it's been ages since she was just simply part of a normal X-team.

And hopefully a miniseries of some kind.

How do the people that liked Exceptional X-Men as it was coming out feel about it now?

One of the odd things about modern comics where people write with the trade in mind is that it can be really hard to formulate your opinion on a comic as it's coming out. I find that sometimes a comic might seem not all that good in the first few issues because you have so little of the story. But when reading it as a complete run where you can see the complete picture the whole thing seems much better. The reverse can also be true where you give a comic the benefit of the doubt in the first few issues because you assume the writer is going somewhere with something. But then when it finishes you're left disappointed.

With this in mind I wonder how people that initially liked Exceptional X-Men feel about it now. Since the series did initially show a lot of promise. I remember people saying it was one of their favourite titles from the From the Ashes lineup. I saw a lot of people that said they liked the new characters and praised the writing for Kitty as the best she had been written in years.

Personally, I liked the first few issues when they first came out. I like the new characters and what the comic initially appeared to be doing with Kitty. But in the end I think the series didn't really live up to all of that promise. The new characters aren't anywhere close to as developed or as compelling as the new kids in Uncanny. And it feels like what potential was there for Kittys storyline was squandered. I would now say the the writing for Kitty there was some of the worst she's had in years. There are also other complaints I have with that series like how it wrote Emma, her relationship with Kitty and her role in the series as a whole.

And all of the complaints I had against that series towards it's conclusion feels even more amplified in X-Men United with a number of strange writing choices and out of character writing. Despite the initial premise appearing to be a focus on the school it seems to exist largely for cameos. On top of the fact that though the Exceptional kids have hardly been developed they still to try and introduce yet another new character. And Kitty hasn't even been in the two latest issues.

So I'm curious if someone else feels a similar way? Where their opinion on Exceptional has done a full 180 since the series first started.

They aren't even bothering to list her anymore (X-Men United #5 spoilers)

Cyclops and Rogue are not only on their own series right now but they have also both gotten their own miniseries recently. But this is the only series Kitty is in right now. Ewing has just kept her on her own island for two years now but doesn't even bother doing anything worth while with her. Is it too much to ask that the comic where Kitty was seemingly supposed to be a core cast member does a single thing with her? For the two latest issues she's just gone.

For the other adults we get to see them try to escape. But with Kitty it's just nothing.

I thought this was supposed to be a school book that focuses on the school that Kitty and Emma start together. But instead it's just cameo city. And them saying that Kitty was in charge of the school in #1 is certainly not reflected in anything that's going on.

All of Kitty Pryde's appearances in X-Men United #4

I am officially sick of this. Ewing seems positively allergic to actually doing anything with Kitty what so ever. She didn't do anything substantial after #2 of Exceptional. Then, after the sudden and unsatisfying wrap up of everything Kitty was dealing with in Exceptional Kitty is now just hanging around United. They said in #1 that she is the school's headmaster. But that seems like it's an action that's only there to throw her a bone.

The only thing that Kitty still has going is her nothing of a relationship with Nina. But despite a hint of some progression with Kitty dodging her calls there is nothing about that in this latest issue. In fact, Kitty doesn't even appear in this issue at all!

With how little of a priority Kitty is in this series I'm just desperate for it to end. So that at least some other writer might take her on. And that's without even getting into all the other problems with how this series is written from characterisation to pacing. I wanted to give it a chance but it's just not good. Especially for Kitty. At this point I hope the rumor this series ends at #10 turns out to be true.

Also, the way that Palma draws Lourdes here looks more like what Kitty is supposed to look like then what she actually looks in this series.

You're tasked to give Kitty a Batman-style utility belt with tools for fighting crime, what do you give her?

The two best themes/aesthetics Kitty has gone with, Shadowcat and Shadowkat, both had her in a kind of ninja theme. And ninjas often have various gear, tools and equipment to do their ninja stuff like grappling hooks, throwing stars, and other infiltration tools. Kitty is also somewhat tech based with genius level knowledge in electronics and computer programming. With her building some of her own tech based tools like a portable cerebro.

So if you had to give Kitty tolls for fighting crime along those lines of ninja gear and tech tools what would you give her?

Thunderbolts* shows of some really cool ways intangibility can be used in fights, I hope we see more of this for Kitty in Jake Schreier's X-Men movie

What do you say when someone says "No, they're like brothers/sisters" about a queer ship?

This feels like one of those things that you hear all the time that just tries to shut down all discussion. Because what can you say other then "Ok...but they're not though. They're just really close." And that can be read one way or a different way. I don't understand why some people take that to the next level of treating those kinds of ships almost like actual incest. Just because they thing two characters might have a sibling-like bond.
