Can can anyone recommend a good pair of electric shears from my ESS? (not too expensive!)

I've been struggling to find a groomer in my area who will come to my house (my dog would be too anxious to be left alone at a strange place with new dogs). She is a bit of a mess and I want to try finding ways to tidy her up. I can brush her, but she gets impatient with my trying to cut our her treasures and twigs. I'm hoping (!) to getting her used to a pair of shears that would allow me to do more quicker.

Are different travel ambitions a compatibility issue for you?

Me (36f) and my boyfriend (37m) have been together for a year and a half, and things are going pretty well. We haven't travelled together yet because of work and other priorities, but we've talked about it. It's been on my mind that the places we want to go are different. We have a few shared locations, but those are mostly secondary. Given that travel is expensive, whose travel do your put first, is it a compatibility issue?

He suggested I can always go with my friend who has similar interests as I do. We were planning on going before I met him anyways, but it still made me feel a little let down that he couldn't just say "Yes I'd go with you" when I said that to him. Would it be weird if i went with a friend and not him? Would this be a big deal for you? I suppose I'm making it into a big deal because we don't have enough money to travel yearly like some people do, so if we do go it'll probably be once every 5 years or so.

Am I blowing this out of proportion?

Do you think sugar contributes to your eczema?

I know this has been asked a lot, but I keep seeing scientific papers stating that sugar is not a cause of eczema. I recognize it's not the only factor, but I keep feeling my bad breakouts are related to stress, too much sweat, fragrance or reactive products, and sugar. Like out of no where, I had good skin, ate (foolishly) too much candy and bam, patches on my face.

What do you think?

Leaving academia as a research manager?

I don't have a PhD, just an MA, but I have worked in academic for about 10 years as a research manager and coordinator. I like my job(s) because they offer a lot of freedom, but I struggle with a lot of disconnect between managing the research and ultimately no outcomes beyond an academic publications. We get a lot of grant money, but it is only ever used to support my job, sometimes students, the PIs travel, and some research. None of these things are bad, but the outcome is always the same - we publish and move on.

I'm struggling with two things. First, as I mentioned above, the research goes nowhere. My PI is tenured, and while his motivation to get grants to keep me there is strong (which I appreciate), his motivation to do anything different (that could also give me new experiences and/or skills) has pretty much fizzled out. At one point he outlined his long term aim - getting a big grant that would allow me to manage that and even give me a bigger wage ( i get a little extra a year but I am below 60k). He changed his mind because he didn't enjoy the last time we did that.

Second, I don't know what my alternative is. I appreciate my freedom, I work remotely and can manage my hours as needed. But is the private sector better? Am I just in the wrong department? Should I be more grateful and appreciate what I have?

Curious if anyone else in a similar role has felt this way? What did you do?

If you are a single person, do you regret buying a home?

I ended up with the house after a separation and now bare the burden of the home, property taxes, and home insurance on my own. My day job pays 55k, my second job around 20k, and I rent a room for $550 a month. The mortgage is about 200k at a rate of 4.8...for the next 35 years. I've done what I can, but I still feel trapped, I often wonder if equity makes a difference when you have high property taxes, or if unexpected home repairs will ruin me.

Some days I really love my house, but often i feel a lot of regret and I think maybe I would feel lighter without the responsibility of the house, but everyone advises me to keep it. The only people who suggest otherwise have never been homeowners.

Have you ever felt similarly? What decision did you make in the end?

[Product Question] Anthelios Ultra-Fluid SPF 50 Facial Sunscreen tinted vs original?

I was wondering if anyone had different experiences between the Anthelios Ultra-Fluid SPF 50 Facial Sunscreen tinted and the clear version?

I keep reading it's one of the top sunscreens out there, but the tinted is possibly irritating my skin. I'm hesitant to try the clear version but at the same time... I really want to like this sunscreen!

Are European sunscreens considered better than North American?

I've heard this before, and i'm not sure if it's true. By better I mean better filters that aren't approved in the USA. Is this generally true?

Owning a Springer Spaniel in or near a big city (e.g. London)

I live in a semi rural suburbia area in Canada, and lately I've had some opportunities to move abroad.... but, I have a springer, and I'm not ever giving her up!

As you all know, she's very high energy, loves to run, and in a bit all over the place in new places. In Canada we don't have as many 'off leash' places as elsewhere, but she does have a big back yard. I feel like she'd love off leash areas, but at the same time, my big back yard is so helpful

Curious to hear other peoples experience of owning a springer in med to large cities - did you manage or was it a bad choice?

[Product Question] Has anyone ever tried La Roche Posay Anthelios Soothing After-Sun? has it helped?

I'm curious about trying the Anthelios Soothing After-Sun because the sun has been so bad, but i'm wondering what experiences other people have had with it, particularly on the face? Also, is it any different from the cicaplast gel?

I'm looking for a grass alternative that's suitable for a dog that likes to run and attack bees!

The title says it all. In my back yard, half the yard is dead dry patchy grass that barely grows. The ground is quite dry. The yard is for my dog, she likes to run and make pathways that would destroy some alternatives like clover. In addition, she likes to chase (and get stung by) bees, so i can't have something that attracts too many bees, and of course, a type of alternative that isn't toxic to dogs....

I know it's a lot of criteria, but any thoughts? I wanted moss, but there isn't enough moisture. Bushes would work, but i need to leave it open for her to run and play.

What little habits does your husband/partner have that annoy you, but you accept them as they are?

For a long time I was in a bad relationship (too long to explain), but I finally got out of it a year and a half ago and I have started dating. Because of that relationship, I've noticed several of my friends seem to view my judgement as skewed (as if i'll accept anything). For example, any little thing about a man, like he's not great at hanging laundry, or absent minded, not enough of a 'handy man' as their husband is, any little thing they see as possible 'red flags' or just negatives. It's almost as if any flaw or perceived downside is a red flag and I should expect perfection.... even though their own partners seem to have similar 'red flags'....

Anyways, curious what types of habits your partners have that might be annoying, but you've accepted these things are unlikely to change, so you take them as they are.

Single women: How many jobs do you have an how much do you save each year?

I'm curious how other single women are managing financially, mainly those in the lower middle class range. I'm recently single (about a year ago), and have taken on more expenses that used to be split, and it is becoming harder and harder as new expenses pop up (for example, need to lease a car now). I have 2 jobs, might take on a 3rd. I wonder how other women are managing? The others I know seem to be managing so much better than me, or at least present themselves that way.

Any tips for using red light masks? [Misc]

Looking for some basic guidelines of what to do and not to do. For example, is it best after a shower? No moisturizer? Morning or night? Does it cause any issues for people?

Thanks!

Am I the only one who hates the idea of a public proposals?

My now ex did it while on vacation in a very public way. It obviously didn't work out, for many reasons, but i've thought about it a lot since then... was it him, the 'surprise' aspect, or the public display? I'm not sure. I like the idea of it being more private, or maybe discussed beforehand, without the jazz and people watching. Same with the wedding, i'd rather elope. Curious what other people prefer? Is it about the proposal or the man?

(just for clarity - I'm not bashing anyone who wants something big, but curious if other people out there feel similarly to me)

For women dating more conventionally attractive men... how do you learn to be more confident?

My partner of 6 months is conventionally more attractive than me, it's just a fact. I'm 38, so I know all the basics... beauty is in the eye of the beholder etc., he picked you etc.... but lately i've been feeling insecure when we go out in public. I know he's attracted to me, so this shouldn't matter, but I feel like we are constantly surrounded by absolutely beautiful women now that it's summertime. They are stunning and dress so much better and more flattering than me. They have perfect hair and delicate little faces that I will never have. I'm on the slender side, but not someone who attracts attention, so I end up feeling very out of place. I know he's trying hard not to look, which I appreciate, but I'm still swamped with feelings of insecurity.

I know these feelings come from me, not him, but I'm not sure how to manage them. I can't afford therapy right now, and I know these thoughts and feelings are silly, immature and self destructive, but despite knowing that they keep surfacing.

Are there any other women who struggle with this? Have you found a way to manage these feelings?

How do you teach inductive qualitative analysis?

I conduct qualitative data analysis on focus groups. My process is a bit messy. I find programs can be helpful in organizing data, but that's it. Sometimes I simply print it if it's a smaller sample. It really depends what i'm working with.

I've been asked to teach this process to a student, but I am struggling to do it in a meaningful way. For example, telling the student to identify patterns after reading the documents a few times, and then to do multiple rounds of code revision is useful, but also an obvious step (in my view). I'm struggling to help the student understand how to identify patterns beyond simplistic 'positive' vs 'negative' viewpoints and to code for both process vs patterns.

Maybe this speaks to problems with my messy approach, but i've been doing this for so long, teaching it feels difficult for me. I'm not sure how to proceed.

Any advice? Resources?
