So, I’m currently enrolled in CHEM 351 but I recently received an email saying that 341 may be more suitable for my major.

I’m trying to get into medical school following my degree so obviously I want the highest grades I can. But, I’ve heard that 351 opens more options to courses that I want to take in the upper years.

So should I switch to 341 or stay in 351? Honestly, I just want one where I can achieve the highest grade possible. I know there’s not much info yet since 341 is a new course, but do we speculate that it’ll be a lot easier than 351? Because I’ve heard straight horror stories about 351…

I’m also not sure if taking 341 poses any issues for the pre-reqs that some medical schools in Canada has… since it’s not “actual” OChem…

Long story short, a circumstance arose where my now ex blocked me out of the blue after disappearing for two weeks and a half and I accused her of ignoring me because she was supposed to be gone 3 days for a work trip to a rural off-grid area (she is currently visiting a foreign country that is halfway across the globe from me).

She didn’t provide any explanation and simply texted me that if I thought she was lying that MAYBE we should break up. I have now heard from a mutual that she has since told her friend group that she considered this as a break up when I thought that she just blocked me randomly as she was angry.

Now, she usually does the immature BS of removing all the relationship posts and reposting I hate my boyfriend and I’m happy to break up shit and she has also posted like borderline thirst traps. Those are bad BUT she has since added her guy best friend from before the relationship to both her main and private accounts (where her private account is otherwise only girls) and he has also commented on her recent posts. When I found about this yesterday I tried messaging her but she did not even open them and now I am blocked everywhere. She actually decided to end the friendship with him when the relationship started on her own accord too.

This hurts so bad and I feel like throwing up and light headed and I can’t eat at all since this. I fear they may be having something more than a friendship. She’s broken up with me before and done this ignoring and blocking shit before.

So far after finishing first year, looking back, I’ve done extremely minimal extracurriculars. All my effort for the past year of uni was poured into maintaining my grades. While I have done that, I know grades aren’t everything, especially if I want to get out of an OOP school (I’m in province for Alberta).

Ever since school ended in April, I’ve done very little in terms of any extracurriculars other than a minor role in a recently started student backed non profit and very very little hours of sports coaching volunteering and part time work (like <20 hours each). I feel so disappointed in myself because I see all my peers have found great research or volunteer opportunities while I spend my days bed rotting.

I know a break is good, especially considering this may be the last time before things start to get intense for me but I’m just wondering if anyone else is feeling the same?

I’ve been trying to find volunteer roles and have since found some but the process to obtain a police check will be way too long and by the time it goes through I will likely be on vacation (planned by my parents) for a month, taking more time away from building experiences.

TL;DR Is anyone else feeling like they are wasting the summer after first year by not doing any extracurriculars?

seriously, it mainly happens when people are waiting for the elevator and its usually people who don't even seem like students of the school. are you really discussing matters THAT important that you can't keep quiet for the 1-2 minutes it takes for the elevator to come? i mean i know it's spring but come on, that doesn't give you a right to not respect the rules of the library.

I understand it varies based on personal factors but what is a general number/time amount to allot to ECs per week? Per month?

I’ve also been signing up for a large number of ECs this summer because I have nothing else to do so I’m wondering what is the ideal number of ECs / the ideal breadth to participate in when uni starts up again so I can have the ideal balance between not falling behind on school while balancing ECs?

I’m not taking spring classes so I’m free all spring and summer. It seems possible trying to find a job rn so I’m not rlly sure what to do.

It’s such a night and day contrast of a couple weeks before constantly studying and being busy to now, doing nothing and waking up at like 1 PM.

I recently finished When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi and it was very interesting to say the least (I finished it in a day).

Are there any book recommendations for a premed you guys have? It doesn’t even need to be medical or even science related. Just anything that could broaden my worldview and allow me to learn something that could be useful for med over the summer as uni has ended for the year.

I was particularly interested in Paul’s account of why someone should pursue medicine and his personal experiences through residency and medical school.
