Indian BF accidentally gets hammered meeting my Grandma

TL;DR: Indian dude meeting GF’s gramma, thinks her Seagram’s bevs are soda, and accidentally gets drunk. Ends with Grandma petting his hair.
———

Dated a sweet Indian dude and brought him to visit my fam. Sikh guy, non-practicing, an engineer.
Smoked a lot of cannabis, drank a lot of sugary/ energy bevs, but never drank alcohol.

My Scandinavian grandma (in her 80s) offers us Seagram's Bay Breezes; a fridge full from Thanksgiving, encourages us to "use them up."

Around the 1-hour mark, he is cracking #4, and I playfully call him "Drunkie". He immediately goes into panic mode and says, "This is a beer?! I felt so hot. I thought I was getting sick, but I'm just… so… happy!"

He is hammered, grinning and saying: "My frame-rate is decreased." We're cracking up.

Ends with him sitting on the floor in front of her recliner, talking about how much he loves the cows on the farm and the Mennonites’ horses. She's running her ancient hands through his thick wavy black hair and saying, “It's ridiculous! It's so thick! He should be a hair model!" and he was smiling like a happy cat in a sunbeam.

Talking about Balatro in my sleep

My boyfriend stepped in cat vomit in the night and let out a yelp. I said “babe are you OK?” and he said “I just stepped in cat vomit.”

I responded: “It’s OK, just discard five cards and you’ll get a full house,” and went back to sleep.

You die and go to heaven. At the gates, there are three recognizable figures waiting to welcome you, guide your transition, and take you on a tour of the place: Dolly Parton, Robin Williams, and __________. (at their peak ages) Who would you be happiest to see as the third part of this trio?

🔥 Yellow Garden Spider guards my yard in upstate NYS

Was heading to work and thought I saw a net cast over my garden; not a net, it was this beauty.

(May she have a bazillion babies and next year, I have a tiny yellow spider army.)

Beauty in my garden

Upstate NY -

Looking at my garden (squints): “I didn’t put a net on that…”

Approaches: “Oh hello, you! This is an awesome web you’ve made. Welcome to our home!”

There's a little part of me that wants to be the Cruella de Vil of spotted lanternflies.

When I found out those beautiful red-and-speckled spotted lanternflies were invasive and kill-on-sight, I had a passing thought that I wanted to make stuff out of them. Earrings of the wings in epoxy, some kinda keychain, maybe even a bigger framed thing.

We were gonna squish em anyway. The brightness of the red is so vibrant... Am I a sicko?

“You tell that boy to cut his nails!” - My grandparents’ first date

THE STORY - Their First Date:

So Grandpa (23) took Gramma (17) out for a ride in his hotrod.

Late that night, they got a flat tire. Gramma stood out with him in the freezing cold, holding the flare while Grandpa changed the tire.

She got home (past curfew), thanked her lucky stars that it was a good match, and fell right asleep.

She woke up the next morning to a noticeably quiet breakfast table, with her parents sitting there in uncomfortable silence.

Without a word, her mom places a single shredded stocking of Gramma’s from the prior night’s laundry (in literal ribbons from the sparks of the flare) next to Gramma’s breakfast plate.

Gramma goes into a panic. Before Gramma explain anything, my G-Grandpa hollers:

“You tell that boy to trim his nails; those nylons are expensive!”

——

This is Grandpa - He likes large machines (souped-up cars/tractors), building/fixing stuff, blowing up defunct barns/oil heaters, a decent tobacco pipe, onion sandwiches, Werther’s, but most of all he LOVES his cows, corn, and cabbages.

This is Grandma - She likes pickling and making danishes (>4000 trays in her lifetime), Lawrence Welk, Beefeater gin, Crispix, cheeses of all kinds, and she LOVES playing sports. Wishes she’d been a PE teacher but the farm needed her.

They were crazy about each other, investigating each other “covertly” through intermediaries, and the rumor mill was spinning. The whole community was buzzing about their first date; it was highly anticipated they’d wind up together.

Grandpa fervently pursued Gramma and she was more than happy to be pursued. He proposed a few months in, but she declined, saying 17 was too young to make such commitment.

They kept dating seriously, and he asked again 3 years later with a little more familiarity under their belts AND with a rock 3X as big as the first one, and this time, she accepted.

They celebrated 60 joyous years and a handful of kids together.

——
Some context:

Grandpa’s family was straight from Scandinavia in the 1900-10s so he had “international hottie in a small homogenous town” mystique going for him; he was known for an insane work ethic and his rakish good looks. A man of few words and all action.

Grandma’s family had been in MA/CT/NJ/NY since 1500s, and had hundreds of acres, plentiful heads of dairy cattle, and significant social status. She maintained relationships a bazillion friends, could “keep house”, and,to reference Kingpin, nice wide childbearing hips. Unofficial queen of her county.

G-Grandpa was aging out and needed menfolk to run the farm. Gramma’s new suitor fit the bill, and was embraced as an apt candidate for the job of getting hitched and working Gramma’s portion of the farm.

How lucky it was the Grandpa was not just farm-literate and motivated, but also madly smitten by her! And that she felt the same about him.

Do you want a big bowl of ice cream with all the fixin’s … right now? Toad’s Too

Spanish sundae, banana split, or in my case, The Squirrel with “all the nuts”.

This is the most wonderful ice cream.

That bowl that I showed was $8. The nuts are crunchy. Holy god, the bowl is lined in hot fudge or something.

Found My Dad's Internet History

When I was about 11 and my sister was 9 (in the 90s), I found Dad's porn search history in Internet Explorer.

I had heard about this porn stuff ("like Playboy magazine, right?") but never expected my dad to be doing such a thing.

It was garden variety search terms, but I was grossed out and really glad I had found it before my mom did because they fought like cats and dogs.

I took a step back and thought, "Teachable moment." I taught him to clear history. I brought him aside and said, "I saw what you were looking at on the computer." He immediately said, "That wasn't me. It must be a virus." I said, "Well, whatever it was... Let me show you how to clear it so nobody happens to find something like that again." And I showed him how to clear his browsing history.

He finally, in a moment of owning it, looked sheepishly at me and said, "Did you tell your mom?" and I said, "Of course not! She'd actually kill you!" "Does your sister know?" "Yeah, she was there."

He immediately loaded us in the car, took us to the fancy farmers market with all the little booths of classy local stuff, and said, "Thanks for not saying anything and being really mature about this. You two girls, have a great time, get whatever you want." We got two high-end artisanal Amish lemonades with molasses, a big hunk of cheese, and a bag of kettlecorn.

We were paid for our silence and we never told a soul...

Til now.

Doomsinger Radagast: What if the Panama Canal fell wildly low as a result of El Niño? 95% confidence for massive transport disruptions.

I ran projections:

1). It's already hotter than ever, leading to Pacific Surface Temperature anomalies and drier/hotter than normal climes in Panama this year.

2). When the thermocline is whack like this, there is way less deep ocean current mixing and therefore, El Niños with wild gradients are typically prolonged.

3). Every 11y, the solar cycle maxes out; just like how pandemics do 100-120y cycles, solar cycles do too. The last 7y El Niño sync-up with the 11y Solar Cycle was 97. Insert "Mafia!" reference here. We get an extra Watt per sq. meter. This year will not just be "climate change"-hot, it will also be "solar max"-hot.

4). Over the Holocene era, fossil beds are showing more and more frequent multi-year events. It's possible this could last a long time, not just 12-14 months.

I am shit at investments and stuff. But I need to be the canary in the coal mine for you guys. Like, I looked at the levels. You can compare it to 23-24's freshwater reservoir levels and refill rates. It's about to get ugly.

Just... Assume what I said is true and invest that way. I don't know puts and calls and whatnot. But if I had one piece of advice...

Capitalize on the upcoming Panama Canal shutdown.

CP, CSX, UNP, MATX

Qualifications: I am a Molecular Genetics major undergrad, 15y HS chem teacher in the Bronx, two Masters, taught AP Environmental Science for years; I am pretty sure no one has noticed this yet. Left the field for medical, but still watch trends. I got about 100 slides of stuff (vetted reputable 'ya-gotta-pay-for-em" journals' worth of research) and I am bugging. US won't be too fucked, but Europe/Asia got potential to feel this bad.

Do your own HW, but soon, all the Liquefied Natural Gas moving through the PC will need to go overland via train. No other way.

Ending lines of The Birdcage (1996) - "Meet me in 20 minutes at the corner of El Dorado and Palm." "Lady, not for a million dollars."

In my top 10.
