Medieval vernacular construction book recommendations

I was just watching a video on how rammed earth floors were made in medieval houses, and I am very much fascinated by this technique, and by vernacular building techniques in general. I am especially interested in how the so cleverly manipulate the most basic materials that are just around. Can anyone recommend any books or papers that detail dwelling construction techniques for this time period? I would really like to get informed recommendation, as research in this area seems to be fairly new and still developing; I don't want to pick up anything with outdated or bad info. Thanks

What type of garment is Da Vinci wearing in Ever After?

It looks really comfortable.

Edit: I know it's a coif. I mean the body garment.

US based etching service.

For several years I have been searching for a photochemical etching service that meets the following criteria.

  1. Has a website where I can upload a cad file, get an instant quote, click purchase, and get my finished etching in the mail. I am not interested in starting a dialogue, or requesting a quote. I have no desire to "discuss my manufacturing needs". I am a guy, doing a hobby which should in no way necessitate any human intervention or return correspondence. Point and click.

  2. Is willing to do very small batch, one-off work. I have a hard time coming up with enough designs to fill up an 8-1/2 x 11 sheet. Most things I would need made would be business card size.

  3. Etches humble sheet brass. I am not actually trying to make PCBs, but I don't know where else to turn. I need sheet brass parts etched for scale model building. This kind of service seems very common in Europe, why can't I find it here.

  4. Does half cuts and through cuts. No inconceivably small elements, or space age tolerances. I am talking about projects that could have easily been done using 1970s technology.

So if anyone has the name of such a service, please comment below. I really want to stress that first point. We have had comparable services for laser cutting and 3d printing for over a decade now. Where is the Shapeways of photochemical etching?

Im not a lawyer, please explain something

So the Federal charges are illegal horseshit, and they have massively fucked up NY prosecution. Is there any angle here, where NY now effectively needs to defend Luigi at the federal level, in order to maintain the legitimacy of its state law? Not that I am expecting it to happen, but what happens if the federal conviction gets overturned down the road? Also, if that doesn’t happen, does all this mean that the new president in 2028 (not that anyone believe that would happen), could pardon Luigi of everything? Seems like freeing Luigi would be a powerful campaign message.

How did the rest of the Ricks get portal travel again?

When C-137 reset all portal travelers, all variants of the Smith family got pulled back to their dimension of origin. Then, Prime and C-137 had to repair/reconstruct/reinvent portal travel again. We saw it take C-137 the better part of a season to do that, and presumably Prime did it faster. But every other Rick across the multiverse never invented portal travel. They had to get it from C-137 or Prime. And by giving it to them, it doesn't seem like Prime taught them the science behind portal travel, so much as just give them the portal gun and the rudiments of how it works. Everything about Tales From the Citadel suggests that the supply of portal fluid is regulated, possibly even finite. Not every Rick can make it, but it isn't clear who can beside Prime and C-137. Come to think of it, where were all the other Ricks getting their portal fluid from to begin with? Was it from the Citadel? How did the Citadel know how to make it?

Getting back to the question at hand, with the Citadel gone and Prime dead, where are all the other Ricks getting their portal fluid/portal tech in general? At best, after they were forced back to their home dimensions, they would have had a working portal gun (or at least it would work again once C-137 fixed portal travel), and they would have a finite amount of portal fluid to travel with. That doesn't seem like the case though, given how free other Ricks seem to be with portal travel this past season. The supply of portal fluid has been reestablished.

How are brass trains made?

I was looking at some picture of brass HO heavyweight coaches and I got to wondering; what sort of techniques are employed by manufacturers to make brass models like that? I am not unfamiliar with working brass by hand and building etched brass kits, but when these small companies are doing small batch, high end, production runs of obscure prototypes, how are they doing it? In particular, I was looking at the coach bodies and wondering about the rivet detail, the window recesses, sills and the various depths of molding involved. I don't believe that kind of thing can be etched, and I assume that the brass it too thick to be embossing rivet detail from the back. Is there some kind of multilayered construction being employed? I can imagine being able to lost wax cast the car ends, but not the sides. They would be too long with too much detail. Does anybody have any insight into how this works? Alternatively, does anyone own any unpainted, limited production run, brass car models that they can share detail illuminating images of?

Feel like I am hurtling toward no contact with my dad, and I don’t know what to do.

M35. I can’t financially support myself. For my whole life, my parents, namely my dad have financially supported me. I am just throwing that out there in front to give you an honest setup for the following. It’s something that rubs a lot of people the wrong way, and I don’t blame them, but please try not hate me.

Anyway, my dad and I have been getting into a lot more disagreements lately than is normal. He’s in his 70s, infirm, and seems to be grappling with a number of thoughts and emotions that, prior to this point he has ignored and suppressed. Basically, I think he is behaving like a shitty person, becoming even more shitty as he refuses to confront his transition into retirement. He refuses to engaged in any self reflection or personal growth. He doesn’t consider the feelings or perspectives of the other people in his life. He is dismissive, defensive, self aggrandizing. He constantly begs for pity, plays the victim, and always prioritizes his pain and discomfort above anyone else’s. He essentially has the emotional needs and bandwidth of a child in a grown man’s body. And he denies all of that, insisting that any way he feels or any way his is to others is justifiable because he is a “good person” who is generous in taking care of other people. After 30 plus years, it really seems to me like he uses money to boost his ego and cocoon himself away from any possibility of self doubt or accountability to others. If I point any of this out, he says that I am wrong, doubles down on his victimhood and says that I am just being nasty for the sake of hurting him. Not the case, I want to help him, but I’m neurodivergent, and it’s asking a lot to deal with the incessant self pity. My struggle never seems to matter until it affects him, in which case, his go to is to throw money at the problem to get me to shut up and make the problem go away. He won’t cut me off, and I can’t bring myself to walk away from material security.

I feel like he has reduced our father son relationship to something base and transactional, and he resents me for it. Like he doesn’t see me as a person, but more like a possession that he is emotionally bound to and financially burdened with. I am something that has to be managed so that he doesn’t have to feel uncomfortable. I am not happy about it, but that’s where we are. I’m his emotional care taker for higher.

As I am struggling with all this, I keep wondering if I am building to a no contact situation here. I really don’t want to do that. He is old, sick, and scared. I get that and I don’t want to hurt him, but why can’t he get that? Increasingly, I can’t escape the thought that this is a toxic codependency; one which he won’t even admit to, much less work on with me. I don’t want to sound ungrateful and I am NOT looking for pity, but I am feeling less and less fortunate and more trapped by material security. I don’t know how or when, but I am worried that this is building to the point where I need to blow up my life, throw away my financial security, go no contact with my dad, and leave him to his fate. I don’t know how to do that, where to start or how to live with how much it would hurt him.

So, I don’t know, I guess I am looking for some outside perspective on the situation. Maybe advice on some sort of next step to take. If you have questions, I will try to answer openly and honestly. I am not a victim, nor am I innocent in all this, but, financial situation aside, the last thing I want is to not own my own shit emotionally.

So I am coming down from an edible.

I don't have a ton of experience with edibles. And by that I mean i ate a brownie once about a 14 years ago. But In this moment, I just want to say that I really appreciate Count the Rice as a game. Not ironically. I really appreciate the call backs and the thematic rhymes to older episodes of game changer. I appreciate that Sam has stumbled onto a new musical genre (which I could better articulate if I actually new anything about music theory). I appreciate the sincere enthusiasm the contestants are bringing to an otherwise menial activity, and that it is all punctuated with twists, turns, and subversion. Its just nice to get invested in something. Not trying to gush. Its just nice for a chance.

Ok, that's all. Out into the world you go.

Do people realize that Trump can’t fix this? (Iran)

By can’t I don’t mean that he hasn’t succeeded so far, I mean he literally lacks the capacity to get out of this war. He is too conceited, too stupid, too compromised, and he has zero credibility. Expecting him to resolve Iran in any capacity is like asking him to touch his toes. He can’t bend space-time like that.

Anxiety that is not fear based.

So, for 15 years now, I have experienced intense, debilitating driving anxiety, that has prevented me from ever getting a license. However, the anxiety I have, is not a product of any fear. I am not afraid of crashing, having and accident, or getting hurt. *I am afraid of being reprimanded by other drivers, and terrified of being pulled over by a cop, but that is besides the point. I have never gotten far enough with driving for that to be a contributing factor to my anxiety.*

Most of my anxiety come from sensory input and disorientation. Driving overwhelms me. All of the controls feel intuitive, the layout of the car feels like a sensory deprivation chamber, and every time I turn my head, turn the wheel, or carry out any sort of movement, I lose spacial orientation of my body, my limbs, and the car relative to the world around me. It is like I am starving for any kind of sensory inputs that I can actually use and understand, in order to form the mental models that I need to do the task at hand, but the situation and environment around me is giving me nothing to work with. Meanwhile, I am conscious of the fact that I am piloting a moving vehicle, I need that information, I need that understanding, but all I am getting is a bunch of useless sensations that I can't make any sense of. So I get overwhelmed and anxious and start to shut down. It honestly feel like cars were designed explicitly to be incompatible with my personal perception.

And there is no getting over it, because legally, I can't practice driving without another driver in the car. It doesn't matter who I drive with, or what they do; having another person in the car, easily doubles my anxiety. I can't relax enough to actual teach myself and adapt which is the thing that I need to do in order to drive.

So here I am at 35. I gave up trying to get a license years ago. Consequentially, my life trajectory has been irrevocably, detrimentally altered. I have had years of my life stolen, because not being able to drive, in the US, is functionally a handicap. Time keeps moving forward and life keeps getting harder, but nothing is making a dent.

What is the cheapest available available bench work. Read before commenting!

I live in an apartment. I do not have a car. Yes going to Home Depot, getting some plywood and some 2X4s, is overwhelmingly the cheapest and most universally accessible option, just not for me. I can't logistically or economically procure lumber, and even if I could, running a bunch of power tools is not an option.

We live in an age of laser cut, flat pack everything. I know that there are a variety of pre cut bench work systems on the market. I am looking for feedback and recommendations on those. So far everything I've found is either comically expensive for what it is, or is only available in the UK.

I am also very interested if any one has a cheaper, mail order DIY solutions. Like is there a commercially available flat pack shelving system, that would make for a good frame work, but that is cheaper than buying something designed for that purpose?

Is anyone else still thinking about what life will be like when they “grow up. “?

Is anyone else still thinking about what life will be like when they “grow up. “?

Let me explain, you know how when you are a kid/teenager or even in college, you’d think about what your life would be like once you were actually out, at liberty, on your own? Pursuing your own goals, building a life and identity for yourself, having experiences, finally finding some kind of meaning and satisfaction in life?

Well, I am 35M, core millennial ; I live alone, my parents support me, I have no immediate friend group, I’ve never been in love, don’t date, have no career, and I can’t drive. On paper, I am exactly where I was when I graduated college 13 years ago. A decade passed me by and I have nothing to show for it. And what’s more, I still feel the waiting and the longing for the next stage of life, same as I did when I graduated. Objectively though, I am well into that next stage, and nothing is changing. It feels like a transitional period, but it been a decade, and this is it. I am still as lost as ever, just living through inertia and because someone else is providing for my material security. I see no way to change any of it, and even if I did, I feel like I am past my prime. I haven’t got it in me to build my life, even if I had the opportunity or understanding of how to do so.

EDIT: I didn't really want to put it in this post, but most people have been sniffing it out anyway. Yes, there is lots of neurodiversity at play here, and lots of mental illness, both on the part of myself and of my parents. I am diagnosed, therapized, and medicated to the nines, and I have been since childhood.

Edit 2: I doubt anyone will believe this, but I didn’t make this post looking for advice, help, or suggestions. I wanted to find out if others felt this way and I wanted to commiserate. Apparently this is not something the majority of people are experiencing.

Why is there still M8 stock running trains to Southeast? I was told months ago it was because some Harlem Line tainsets had failed in the snow and cold weather; so why are they still here in June? I just got 2 M8 sets in a row.

Lense orientation

I have a 0erscription pair of those circular lense, Harry Potter glasses. I recently sat on them and one of the lenses popped out. This has happened withmy normal glasses before, except this time, since the lense is circular, I can't tell how the lense should be oriented.

Does it matter if I put the lense in upside down? It's a single vision prescription for seeing distance. Is the lens perfectly symmetrical throughout like a magnifying glass?

Why is my wall wet?

I recently notice some paint bubbleling on my bathroom wall. Upon picking it, the paint pulled away, revealing water stains where the tile nosing meets the paint. Ok, so the wall it wet, but now I need to figure out why. For context, I am on the 5th floor of an 8 floor, prewar, brick apartment building. My bathroom is quite small, and the walls in question are the exterior wall and the wall immediately adjoining it. The wall finish is latex paint on top of a plaster repair system, which was applied to the original, cracked lathe plaster, long before my time.

Here's what I hope it happening. I am in the habit of taking two hour long, hot showers. I've seen steam condense on the walls, and there is no vent in my bathroom. I think that steam is condensing on the walls and running down the latex paint, until it hits the tile nosing, where it's collecting and getting wicked into the plaster. Does that sound likley? Has anyone encountered something similar?

What I am far more afraid of is that the water is coming from somewhere else inside the wall. Either from the apartment above me, or the exterior some how.

Please tell me it's just a matter of drying the wall, getting a window fan.
