For context, the archeological evidence points to the Lënape having been the first people to have been sustained by the lands from modern day NYC to Delaware for at least 13k years. Today, the Lënape are a diasporic community living north and west of their homelands in what has effectively been a centuries long exile. This exile was facilitated by disease, colonial coercion, genocidal violence, and forced removal that was initiated by the Dutch, English, and US governments. Manahàhtaàn and many other place names around NYC are remnants of their language that has developed in relationship with the land over millennia. Do we have a responsibility to support their return to their homelands?
