Thoughts about John's return

This is not gonna be another "oh the show has aged so badly" post. We've all heard and we all know. I'm just me dissecting a storyline and explaining how it could have been better. Obviously, spoilers ahead so click away if you haven't seen season 6.

In season six, Gaby's ex lover/former victim John returns and hires her 17 year old niece Ana at his restaurant. Noticing Ana's moon eyes, Gaby is suspicious about John's intentions with her niece.

So Gaby basically accuses John of trying to do to Ana what she did to him at the start of the series. The irony of the situation is never acknowledged aside from a passing quip about Gaby helping John with his homework.

Gaby never has a moment of realization or self-awareness that she's very close to the position John's mother was in during season one. She doesn't look at Ana, a lovestruck 17 year old wanting to have sex with a man in his late 20s, and see John and relate her immaturity to the immaturity he had when they were together. In fact, she accuses John of trying to seduce Ana using the same charms he allegedly used on Gaby. The whole situation is presented as a "will she or won't she" drama to test whether Gaby is truly over John Rowland.

Eventually, John reveals that he has no interest in Ana and is merely using her to make Gaby jealous because he's still in love with her and wants to rescue her from her apparently boring, unglamorous life. Let's put this in perspective: John's first intimate relationship was with a grown woman starting from age 16 through to 18 and ten years and one failed marriage later (which was most likely partially caused by his unresolved feelings for his abuser) he still wants to be with her.

While it is wrong for him to play with a teenager's feelings in order to destroy a marriage and a family, John is still a victim of the long lasting impact Gaby's grooming had on him.

Yet again, this isn't about John. It's about Gaby putting the final nail in the coffin of her affair.

If the show is ever revived, I hope they revisit John's character again and actually respectfully portray him as a victim while having Gaby face full remorse for her actions, not as an adulterer but as a predator. The fact that she ended the series as the host of her own television show would make for an interesting scandal if her past relationship were made public.

Respect the Third Doctor (Doctor Who)

#Respect the Doctor 🎵 ##"Courage isn't just a matter of not being frightened, you know... it's being afraid and doing what you have to do anyway."

The Doctor's third incarnation found himself stranded on 20th century Earth after being exiled by the Time Lords as punishment for violating their policy of non-interference. Despite his TARDIS being disabled and his knowledge of time travel suppressed, the newly regenerated Doctor continued to thwart extraterrestrial menace as the chief scientific advisor to the Unified Intelligence Taskforce (UNIT for short). This was an uneven alliance due to the Doctor's pacifist philosophy coming into conflict with UNIT's bureaucracy and militaristic approach. In fact, the Doctor regularly found himself dealing with human adversaries in addition to alien invaders.

This incarnation was a dapper man with a fondness for Venusian culture, delta particles and reversing polarities of a neutron variety. He got up to many Bond-like shenanigans involving tons of fight scenes, car chases, intelligence operations and even had his own moustache-twirling archenemy in a Nehru jacket.

The implications of this scene

This one scene in the pilot really sets in motion a lot of Georgie's development for the rest of the series. In this moment, Georgie expresses his frustration at having his younger, more intelligent, socially incompetent brother upgrade to the same school as him. And how does George react? He tells him to just get over it. He speaks firstly as his coach and second as his father.

When you think of the consequences of living with Sheldon, you'd often think of Missy and the neglect she suffered. However, I reckon it had a more subtle impact on Georgie.

Most of Georgie's storylines involve him growing up too early. Favoring working over playing football, developing his business skills selling snowglobes or test answers, moving into his own self-bought van, dropping out of high school, helping Meemaw run her illegal gambling enterprise and eventually having a child with a much older woman.

Georgie's pursuit of independence is the result of him not really having a normal childhood. While his parents were fixated on Sheldon's development, Georgie's needs remained unmet. Sure, he and his father were a "team" as Missy described, but it was more in the line of coach and player over father and son.

Instead of internalizing his feelings as resentment like Missy did, Georgie learned how to rely on himself and his own instincts. Of course, his instincts weren't always right. He was still an immature teenager stumbling into adulthood.

Sheldon and Dr. Sturgis

Anybody else kinda disappointed at how Sheldon and Dr. Sturgis' relationship disminished over the course of the show?

Dr. Sturgis was introduced as the one person who truly *got* Sheldon. Like Sheldon, he was a socially awkward genius but unlike him, was actually very amicable and kind-hearted. He was a good mentor figure. Then when Sheldon got into East Texas Texh, Dr. Strugis was sidelined which was (understandly) done to make Sheldon's transistion into college harder, leaving the hapless Dr. Linkletter to take Sturgis' place. While Sheldon and Linkletter's dynamic was undoubtably entertaining and necessary, they didn't have the same meaningful bond.

Towards the end of the show, Sturgis became less of an individual character as his role was merged with Linkletter's into double act of stuffy old professors compared the now-teenage Sheldon.

The very last interaction Sturgis has with Sheldon is him giving his condolences over George's death and Sheldon ignoring him. I get that Sheldon is closing himself off due to grief, but I wish the two had more of meaningful final interaction before Sheldon went off to Caltech since Sturgis was such an important part of his personal and academic development.

Season 7's Switched at Birth storyline

I've seen alot of complaints about this particular storyline. I'd say the main problem with it is that it focuses almost exclusively on Gaby and her attachment to her biological daughter, but barely on anybody else.

This kind of storyline is something you could frame an entire show on. It's very multi-faceted with tons of players involved. Here it makes up one half of a season on a show with four main leads and numerous supporting characters. There just isn't enough time given to flesh out the experiences of everyone involved, the most eregious example being Juanita's.

She learns her parents aren't really her parents and it's never dwelled on. She has her initial reaction and some offscreen therapy sessions. We never really see her pain. They're just used as a means to force Gaby to let go of Grace. Gaby's feelings are the only thing of matter here.

People critcize Carlos for pushing Gaby's to abandon Grace's memory and being insensitive. The thing is he's acting on his protectiveness for Juanita. Because her plight isn't the focus, it's harder to see things from Carlos' POV. He's not unsympathesizable. His feelings are just not focused on.

Gaby's pseudo-grieving period for Grace eventually becomes a segway for her dealing with her rape at the hands of her step-father which leads up to season 8's ongoing storyline.

At this point, the swapped at birth storyline becomes a total non-factor. In one episode Gaby and Juanita are casually watching a horror movie together and it struck how weird it is to see these two are chilling together. There's no reconcilliation scene between them. They're just up to their usual shennanigans like it never happened.

Really my biggest disappointment with this story is how inconsequential it is. It's a huge complex issue that ends up only setting up another unrelated storyline. They could have done so much more with it.
