the guy asking for more settings immediately asked me what he should choose

I used to think “more control” in software was pretty much always a good thing.

if people know what they're doing, why not let them choose?

then I watched someone actually get the extra control he'd been asking for.

we were setting up a restaurant menu in menuforma, and he'd mentioned a few times that he didn't like some things being decided automatically.

fair enough.

so this time we went through the more detailed options instead of just leaving everything as-is.

he opened the first setting.

changed it.

looked at the result for a few seconds.

changed it back.

opened another one, read the explanation, went back to the first one again.

then maybe two minutes later he asked me,

“what would you pick here?”

I told him I wasn't sure.

ten seconds later:

“what do most people use?”

which made me laugh because this was basically the exact decision he'd wanted more control over.

we kept going and the same thing happened a couple more times.

he liked knowing the options existed.

he just didn't particularly want to make all of those decisions right NOW.

and I think that's the distinction I'd never really thought about.

“don't lock me into the default” is not necessarily the same request as “make me choose a default before I can continue.”

sometimes I want the advanced settings button to exist mostly so I know I can come back to it if I ever care.

I don't actually want to stop during setup and develop an opinion on twelve things I've never thought about before.

after watching that, I'm much more sympathetic to software that gives you a reasonable default and quietly leaves the escape hatch nearby.

for people who use stuff with a ridiculous number of settings, where's the line for you?

do more options actually make something feel more powerful, or does there come a point where “control” just turns into homework?

As a freelancer, how can I market myself?

I've been freelancing for a while now, and my clients are generally satisfied with my work. However, I'm unsure how to market myself to gain more clients. Currently, many of my projects come through referrals from previous clients, but these opportunities are relatively few.

I showcase my portfolio on Instagram and Facebook. However, I feel I also need to create a personal website to introduce my design philosophy, services, and past work so potential clients can better understand my capabilities. With a limited budget, I've attended a free webinar hosted by accio work to try and create my own website.

Besides these methods, what other ways can I appear more professional and trustworthy to clients? What channels or methods have helped you acquire more clients?

Claude Science looks cool, but what about chemistry?

I’m excited about Claude Science, but most of the examples seem pretty bio-heavy.

In materials and battery research, my problem usually isn’t finding papers. It’s remembering why I ran a calculation, what failed, and how six random results were supposed to connect.

A senior in my lab recently told me to check out sciclaw·mira since it’s more focused on project memory for materials and chemistry. Haven’t used it much yet, but honestly, that sounds closer to the actual problem.

Curious what people in chem or materials would actually find more useful here.

any budget friendly couch recs that actually last or don't sag immediately?

Been trying to find a decent spot for movie nights without dropping crazy money on a traditional loveseat. honestly the furniture market right now is super frustrating—cheap stuff turns into a pancake after like two weeks, and anything decent costs half a paycheck.

looked into some alternative options since standard couches are so pricey. lovesac is supposed to be great quality, but 800 to 1500 bucks is way out of budget and buying something like that blind without sitting in it feels risky. yogibo is around 470 dollars and uses microbeads so the durability is actually pretty solid, but from what people say online, it feels more like a giant floppy pillow rather than a seat with actual structure.

then I stumbled across this pamapic double bean bag online for roughly 140 dollars. specs look okay—it has actual back and arm rests instead of being a random round ball, and uses memory foam instead of cheap foam beads. since there arent many deep reviews out there yet, im a bit on the fence.

has anyone actually used this budget two person bean bag for daily use? does it hold its shape or does it sag super fast? if you guys have any other good sub 200 couch recs, let me know

Do you use social media to get to know someone before dating?

Before I decide to get serious with someone I meet on dating apps, I usually check their social media first. I just want to know more about them before getting too involved.

Recently, I also started using some AI tools that can help with background checking, like acciowork and similar ones. I basically put together some public information from their social media and let it help me organize things I might have missed. But honestly, the results always make me hesitate. I’ll notice some small things, some different opinions, or some patterns that make me question if we’re actually a good match. And sometimes I feel like I’m just finding reasons to walk away before even giving someone a real chance.

Now I’m wondering if this actually helps me avoid the wrong people, or if I’m just making it harder for myself to meet someone good. Do you guys do any kind of background check before dating someone online?

Wrote down every purchase for three months and ended up cutting $324 a month

I never cut the things I actually enjoy. I counted for three months first and then cut the stuff I couldn't remember buying.

  1. Food delivery. Was averaging $186 a month across the two of us. Now $60. We kept Friday and killed the rest, and I genuinely don't miss the Tuesday ones because I never remembered them the next day anyway.

  2. Subscriptions. $47 a month for four things, two of which I had not opened since March. Cancelled those two, $22 back.

  3. Coffee out. $71 a month. Not taking this to zero, that's a miserable life. Capped it at $40 and it stuck.

  4. Groceries. $610 down to $525, just from shopping once instead of three little top up trips. The top up trips were where all the snacks got in.

  5. Parking at work. $60. Started leaving the car on a side street a fifteen minute walk out. All of it.

The counting is the whole trick and it's also the bit I failed at twice before. Notes app died in a week, spreadsheet died in about nine days. What finally stuck was saying it out loud into Pockita at the till instead of promising myself I'd write it up later, and then it reads me back where I'm sitting each day, so I can't drift for three weeks and find out at the end of the month.

$324 a month total and none of it hurt.

What's one thing you cut that you genuinely don't miss, and what was the monthly number on it?

My startup workflow changed a lot

I've built a few online projects over the past few years. Some worked, some didn't. The biggest change for me was stopping the search for a "perfect idea." Now I focus on finding problems first. I spend time on Reddit, Google Trends, Product Hunt, and Indie Hackers. If I keep seeing people talk about the same problem, that is usually a better signal than a random idea.

When I build something new, I try to get a basic version out as soon as possible. ChatGPT helps me organize ideas and write copy, Claude helps with research, and tools like Lovable, Bolt, and Framer are enough for testing early concepts. After that, I focus on getting feedback from real users. Reddit, X, and LinkedIn are still my main channels for this. A few conversations with users often teach me more than spending weeks guessing what people want.

For managing multiple accounts, I set things up properly from the start. I use AdsPower with residential proxies to keep different accounts separated. It takes some extra work at the beginning, but it saves a lot of trouble later. I also automate repetitive tasks with tools like n8n, Make, and Zapier. For analytics, I use Google Analytics and Microsoft Clarity to see where users come from and how they interact with the product.

One thing I learned late is to charge earlier. I used to think a product needed more features before asking people to pay. In reality, one paying user can teach you more than another month of building. Most projects end up different from the original idea anyway. Users shape the product, not the first version of your plan. So now I spend less time looking for ideas and more time building, testing, and improving.

Help me cope with BPD wife

Hello

My wife (32F) and I(35M) have been married for three years. When she is emotionally stable, I feel she is the best partner in the world. She is kind, always caring, creative, and very empathetic. She notices small details that others overlook and is always there to help when others need it.

But when she has an emotional breakdown, we both suffer greatly. Her emotions become very intense, and I try to explain things to her or communicate with her rationally, hoping she will understand my thoughts. She seems unable to listen to my explanations and instead feels that I don't understand her, which makes her even angrier.

Most of the time, she is very sensitive to changes in my mood, tone of voice, and behavior. If I come home tired from getting off work and talk less than usual, she might wonder if something has happened. Even if I just tell her, "I'm just too tired today," it might turn into a long conversation about "Are you unhappy?" and "Do you still love me?"

I feel I have to be very careful in expressing my thoughts because a small misunderstanding can trigger a very strong emotional reaction. For example, if I forget something she told me before, or forget something I promised to do for her, she might feel it's not just simple forgetting, but that I don't love her enough and therefore don't take her words to heart. Now, I write down what she mentions, and even use accio work to schedule reminders to avoid forgetting. I hope that through these methods, she knows that what she says is important to me.

Normally, she feels that I am the most supportive person in the world, and I can feel her love for me. But when conflicts arise, the situation can suddenly change. She might feel that I am the one who hurt her the most, and even say, "You don't care about me at all." After the argument, she feels guilty and apologizes to me. I know she didn't mean to hurt me, and I know she couldn't control her emotions at that time.

But what exhausts me most is that I find myself becoming overly focused on her emotions. I constantly observe her tone of voice, facial expressions, and reactions, trying to anticipate when she'll be unhappy. I spend too much energy maintaining a calm relationship and avoiding conflict, neglecting my own feelings.

I love my wife and want to support her. She is undergoing BPD therapy and is trying to adjust. For those whose partners have BPD, how do you support each other while also protecting your own mental health? Are there any ways to have a healthier relationship for both of you?

How did you find out your partner was cheating?

I’ll go first.

After we became official, we were in a long distance relationship. He works as an ER nurse, so his schedule was always crazy. At the beginning, whenever he was busy, he would tell me, and after his shift he would still text me about his day and what he was doing. But then one day, things just started feeling different. He stopped telling me anything, and even when he was off work, he barely wanted to talk. He always said he was tired. At first, I didn’t think too much about it. I kept telling myself that he was just exhausted from work and didn’t have enough energy for the relationship.

But I’m also someone who overthinks a lot, and I couldn’t ignore that feeling. I started looking back at our conversations and some things he posted online. I didn’t want to accuse him without proof, so I tried using an AI tool I had been using called ac ci o wo r k to organize some of the information. I put some public posts and conversations that confused me into it, and it helped me summarize the changes over time. It pointed out some things I didn’t notice before, like how he suddenly mentioned one coworker more often, how their interactions became more frequent, and how his attitude toward me changed around the same time.

I honestly thought maybe I was just being paranoid, but then I checked his social media more carefully and found out he and that coworker were actually really close. A few days later, I couldn’t shake the feeling, so I went to his workplace without telling him. And yeah… I saw him with that same coworker. They were laughing together during a break, standing way too close, and the way they looked at each other just felt wrong. I walked over and called his name. The look on his face basically told me everything before he even explained.

He kept saying nothing happened and that they were just friends, but the worst part wasn’t even the other person. It was realizing he had slowly stopped putting effort into us while I was still trying to save the relationship. I ended things that day. Looking back, the signs were there the whole time. I just kept making excuses because I wanted to believe him.

So how did you guys find out your partner was cheating?
