Passed F26 UBE on my 3rd try (287 score), I kind of want to take the CA Bar Exam J27... You think its a bad idea while balancing a full time job?

For what its worth, my job is strictly 40 hours a week with no overtime, weekends, or billable hour requirement. My attorney job is also fully remote.

It's been a dream of mine to live in CA since I was a kid. And while my current attorney job is remote, I still want to take the CA bar exam so I can be fully licensed in CA.

I want to start studying sooner than later just so that I don't have to cram as the J27 exam gets closer.

Some lawyer friends around me have been suggesting i should wait till J28 in hopes that CA adopts the NextGen bar exam, but I would rather take the exam sooner when the knowledge is still fresh in my mind.

Any insight or tips are appreciated.

Is it normal to feel like you have no idea what you're doing and no idea what's going on as a first year associate?

Just started my first lawyer job a few weeks ago... Is it normal to feel like I have no clue what I'm doing and no clue how to do anything, and no clue what's going on at my firm?

Everyone is very nice and supportive, so no one has yelled or reprimanded me in any way. Everyone seems very supportive and helpful and willing to offer a helping hand to each other, even among senior attorneys in relation to one another... Just wanted to make sure that this feeling I am feeling is normal and not a cause for concern lol

If it helps to provide context, I work in tax law with zero prior tax law experience. My job is also fully remote with no billable requirement.

At what age does keeping up with current fashion trends suggest you’re dressing “too young” for your age?

For example if you saw an 80 year old wearing skinny jeans, your first thought would be that they’re dressing too young for their age… what age does that transition occur?

What can I wear with this polo? Could I wear black chinos with it? I have worn khaki shorts with it before, but I want to try wearing it with pants (not khaki colored). I was hesitant to wear black pants with it because the shirt appears to have some navy blue in it

How many years into the practice of law until you are "pigeonholed" into that practice area? First year tax law associate and wondering how long I can stay in this role while still having the freedom to transfer to another practice area

To those who took the CA bar exam while working full time after taking the UBE, what did you do to pass the CA Bar? Any tips or advice?

Passed the UBE this year as a retaker and hoping to take the CA bar exam in the next year or two. What do you recommend to pass the CA Bar exam after taking the UBE?

Passed UBE on 3rd try in F26. Hoping to take J27 CA Bar Exam. Any general tips/tricks/advice?

I still have my Barbri books from the F26 UBE. Currently working a standard 9-5 attorney position, generally not too stressful. No overtime/weekend work for the most part.

Any recommendations or advice on best books to use? Tips? Tricks? When the week of the exam comes in July 2027, I am also planning to take the full week off for the exam.

Have a gluten sensitivity (bad headaches) and have avoided gluten for almost 2 years now… thinking of eating it occasionally. Thoughts?

Has anyone gone back to eating gluten after avoiding it for awhile? How did it go?

How many years after law school do you remove law school extracurriculars/achievements from your resume, even just to make space?

Baby lawyer here, in my first year of practice at a firm... I have quite a few extracurriculars and such listed on my resume from both law school and college... Should I remove them from my resume now that I am working?

I can't imagine future employers will care what I was involved in in law school, and will mostly care about my work experience, but I could be wrong!

Is there anything you learned in law school that you didn't learn was wrong/incorrect until you did bar prep or practiced as an attorney?

I'll go first! I remember in Evidence in law school, I was taught that hearsay was, "A statement made by someone other than the declarant, that is used to prove the truth of the matter asserted." I still remember it verbatim!

It wasn't until bar prep that i learned that hearsay does NOT have to be a statement made by "someone other than the declarant" and the declarant's own statement can be hearsay as well.

And the craziest thing is that the professor who taught this course was literally a JUDGE on the state Supreme Court!

Should I miss my brothers graduation tomorrow (Sunday) in order to be home to accept a package with my work laptop (package needs signature to be accepted) if I'm starting a new job on Monday?

I start a new (remote) attorney job on Monday that I accepted a few weeks ago, they are sending me my work laptop via mail and the package needs a signature to be accepted. They tried to deliver it today, Saturday, but I wasn't home when it was delivered.

It says online that FedEx is going to try to deliver it tomorrow, so that means I would have to sit at home all day waiting for the work laptop to be delivered so that I can sign for it, which is fine, but that also means I would have to miss my brothers graduation from grad school on Sunday tomorrow so that i can be home to accept the package in the event that it gets delivered during his ceremony.

Should I still go to my brothers graduation tomorrow and potentially show up to my new remote job on Monday without the work laptop they sent me? Again, the package can't be delivered unless someone signs for it, so FedEx won't just leave it at the door. And I obviously don't want to look like the guy who shows up to work unprepared on his first day...

Mind you, I accepted this job like 3+ weeks ago, and they aren't delivering my work supplies to me until like 1-2 days before I start...

Does anyone else feel like straight people are weirdly comfortable asking gay people questions about their sex lives? (E.g. “who’s the pitcher/catcher”)? Why do they feel entitled to know that sort of information?

Even from people who mean well, it’s so bizarre. And if gay people were to ask straight friends/family about their sex lives it would be considered bizarre or inappropriate…

If you work a FULLY remote attorney job, do you think it's okay to take a "working vacation" for 2-3 weeks where you still work 8 hours/day, business as usual, just in a different location while you're out of town?

Sometime next year I was thinking of taking like a 2+ week long vacation to California, get an AirBNB and all that, while still working my usual 9-5 remote job that I do. I would not be using any PTO days on this trip since I'll still be working full time.

You think that would raise any red flags at my firm? Should I even tell my superiors that I am planning to take the trip since I will still be working my usual hours? Or should I not say anything.

How much vacation is allowed in a job with unlimited PTO?

I’m a first year associate if that makes a difference

EDIT: sorry, I mean how much *consecutive* vacation? 1 week trip? 2 week trip?

Is it true that, to get hired on Capitol Hill, you typically need someone already working in the office to "flag" your resume when you apply? When I would apply for hill jobs in the past, I was always told that.

Title says it all.

Is it okay to have years-long employment gaps on your resume if the goal is to highlight more relevant experience you had a long long time ago? Since a resume can only be 1 page

Re-drafting my resume and I want to include some older positions I had many years ago, but in order to include them chronologically, along with every job I’ve had since then, I have to make the font REALLY tiny, since resume’s can only be 1 page…is it permissible to cut out some of the jobs in the middle if they’re not particularly relevant for the future role(s) I’m applying for, and I wanna keep the old jobs on my resume for the sake of relevance and highlighting expertise in a particular field?

I ask because, doing so would result in multiple years-long employment gaps on my resume which I know doesn’t look great either…

People who started their careers in tax law, where are you at 5-10+ years into your career? (Preferably non-biglaw respondents)

Starting my first attorney job working in tax law soon. It seems like a good fit from what I can tell, but just curious where other people who started off in tax law ended up. Did you stay in tax law long term or pivot to something else?

What, if anything else, can you pivot to from tax law?

For a first year associate, how much PTO should you take at a job with an unlimited PTO policy?

Got my first attorney position recently and they don’t have a strict number of PTO days, they have a sort of “use it don’t abuse it” policy when it comes to PTO

How much PTO, If any, is it permissible for me to take my first year?

EDIT: if it makes a difference, the job in question does not have a billable hour requirement
