When reproductive choice becomes a family’s burden—and a woman’s sacrifice

I often wonder why, in some economically disadvantaged families in India, people continue having children even after a doctor has warned them that there is a significant risk of passing on a serious genetic condition.

This isn't about blaming people for being poor or suggesting that disabled people shouldn't be born. Every person, regardless of disability or economic status, deserves dignity and a life free from discrimination.

What concerns me is what happens when a family knowingly keeps having children despite medical advice without having the resources to provide adequate care for the children they already have.

And there is often a gendered dimension to this. In many families, the woman is expected to keep getting pregnant until they have the "right" number of sons or until a healthy child is born. Her body becomes the mechanism through which the family keeps trying again and again.

Where is her choice in all of this?

People talk about reproductive rights primarily in terms of a woman's right not to have children. But reproductive autonomy also means having access to contraception, genetic counselling, accurate medical information, and the genuine ability to decide whether and when to have another child.

At the same time, we need to be careful about the language we use. Saying "these people shouldn't have children" easily slips into classism or eugenics. The better question is:

Why are women being denied the education, healthcare, contraception, counselling, and autonomy necessary to make informed reproductive decisions?

If a doctor advises a couple about a serious hereditary risk, they should have access to counselling and reproductive choices—not social pressure to keep "trying" until they get the outcome their family wants.

Reproductive freedom means the freedom to choose, not the expectation to reproduce indefinitely.

Does anyone else feel that women are often portrayed in a degrading way in manga and anime?

I've read manga and watched anime for quite a long time, and I've noticed a recurring pattern: female characters are often sexualized, objectified, stripped of agency, or treated primarily as accessories to male characters.

I'm not saying manga or anime shouldn't contain sexual characters or problematic women. Fiction doesn't have to make every character admirable. What bothers me is the disproportionate way female characters are often treated, particularly when compared with male characters in the same story.

Sometimes, even serious or otherwise well-written stories seem to rely on fanservice, unnecessary sexualization, humiliation, or female characters existing mainly to support the male protagonist's development.

I'm curious whether other manga/anime fans have noticed this, too, and what you think the reasons are. Is it related to target demographics, industry practices, cultural attitudes, genre conventions, or something else?

And if you disagree, I'd genuinely like to hear your perspective.

These scammer brothers inserted the idea of misogyny into so many young boys and men 😔😒

My feed was filled with these 2 idiot scammers shorts during and post covid. So many young minds were brainwashed by them. Cases of misogyny and gender based violence were spiking in schools, colleges, and other public places. Mothers were being harassed by their kids and young girls were being slut shamed.

Witnessed a Happy Relationship Get Ruined By Parents 😔☹️

So there is a guy (26 M) named X who lives in the same society as me. I have known him for quite some time as we used to play cricket together before he went to college. He now works in the I.T industry. Last week he got married to a girl (25 F) named Y who he had been dating for 3 years. Almost half of the society was invited to his wedding. I was very happy for him cuz he was the cool and easy-going bhaiya who always looked after me like a little brother.

Today, he and his wife visited us with their parents(both of their parents) to seek blessings from my parents. While the older adults were talking in the hall, X and Y were with me in my room. We were talking about how things have been going and them reminiscing about their dating days. I was pretty excited to hear all the info. During the conversation Y asked X to make time to go to the movie's together next Wednesday. To this X told Y that he has an important presentation on Wednesday and to give him some time so that he can complete all pending office work he missed bcz of the wedding.

This conversation then turned into a lovers quarrel and banter with Y teasing X and saying how his time has decreased for her just after their marriage and X saying u know... no no nothing like that and such. I was quietly enjoying them having this lovely banter which was quite amusing. Now X started playfully teasing her with his remarks and stuff to which Y was smirking. The conversation was loud but not enough to disturb others.

Suddenly Y's father barged into the room, held X by his collar and started shouting at him to speak to his daughter in a lower tone and not to question or insult her.

It took us completely by surprise. He was extremely angry and was shouting insults at X. The situation was so ridiculous that even I (an introvert who doesn't interfere in others' matter) had to intervene and tell the uncle that it's just a misunderstanding and that X wasn't being rude but that fk*** man pushed me on the ground and started screaming more intensely.

He then held Y's hand and started pulling her out of the room. Y's mother asked what was happening and that uncle told her that X was shouting and insulting Y. Then both of Y's parents started hurling slurs and insults towards X and his parents. X was constantly trying to explain that it was nothing but a sweet moment they were sharing with each other but to no avail. My parents were also shocked at what was happening.

But do u know the crazy part- Y stayed silent throughout the incident. She then left with her parents leaving all of us utterly stunned. Her father was also saying that he will file a domestic violence and dowry case against X. X only took Rs 101 as shagun with no dowry and no conditions on their marriage.

X and his parents had to endure such humiliation for absolutely nothing and Y who apparently loved X spoke nothing and didn't even take a stand for X. He is crying in my house now and Y isn't even answering his calls. I am saddened to see his state and don't know how to console him.
