Hope Mill in Scituate was originally a cotton textile factory. The first wooden mill was built in 1806. After it burned in 1844, Brown & Ives replaced it with the large stone mill. Later occupants manufactured lace and elastic fabrics; textile production continued until 2007.

The Great Barrington Fairgrounds in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, dates back to the 1850s and was home to one of New England’s longest-running agricultural fairs. Horse racing began there in 1859, and the grounds eventually became known for Thoroughbred and harness racing, livestock shows, carnival rides, concerts, and other events. The fairgrounds were especially popular from the 1940s through the 1970s, but attendance and racing declined in later decades. A 1995 tornado caused significant damage to the property, although racing briefly returned before ending for good in 1998. Today, the roughly 57-acre historic property remains a reminder of a time when county fairs and horse racing were major attractions throughout the Berkshires.
