I’m half Turkish half Hungarian I’ve attached my ancestry results as well. I don’t really understand illustrative DNA yet any insight would be helpful! These are my closest matches. I’ve attached my ancestry results as well!
When I was younger, I had a reproduction of this Crusader coin from the County of Tripoli. At the time I obviously wasn’t collecting anything remotely this seriously, but I loved that little repro and it ended up being one of the coins that got me interested in numismatics in the first place.
Fast forward more than 7 years of collecting, and today I finally got the real deal.
Over those years, I’ve been lucky enough to add coins to my collection that are much rarer and far more valuable than this one. But honestly, very few of them have the significance this coin has for me.
It feels pretty surreal holding an actual example of a coin I used to know only from a reproduction as a kid. It’s not about the price or rarity with this one it’s about finally owning the real version of a coin that played a part in starting this whole hobby for me.
Definitely one of those collecting goals that feels like coming full circle.
I've been researching one of my Hungarian lines in the Roman Catholic parish records of Egyek, Hungary, around 1800 and came across something interesting.
My ancestor Michael appears in his earlier records as Szakmarÿ. At his marriage to his second wife, Helena Urbany, he is still clearly recorded as Michael Szakmarÿ.
However, in later records the same family begins appearing as Szatmarÿ, and by the next generation the t is very clear. I have been able to establish that these are the same people through spouses, children and the surrounding records.
One of Michael's daughter's baptismal entries is ambiguous enough that I can't tell whether the priest wrote Szakmarÿ or Szatmarÿ, but later records are unmistakably Szatmarÿ.
Something else that caught my attention is the ending: the surname is repeatedly written with ÿ, both as Szakmarÿ and Szatmarÿ. Other surnames in the same records can end in an ordinary y (for example, Helena is written Urbany), so the ÿ seems to be deliberately written.
For people familiar with late 18th/early 19th-century Hungarian records:
I'll attach examples of the original records showing the different spellings.
I’m eagerly waiting for my AncestryDNA results and was wondering if there are any Hungarians here who have taken the test.
I’m half Turkish and half Hungarian. My Hungarian family is from Tiszaörvény, Tiszafüred, Egyek, and Boldva, and as far as I’ve been able to trace, my ancestors lived in those areas for generations.
For those of you who’ve tested, what ethnicity percentages did you receive?
I’ve attached the full record and closeups
I’ve been researching my family tree for quite a while, but I’ve started hitting dead ends and would really appreciate some guidance from people with more experience.
My background is half Turkish and half Hungarian. On my Hungarian side, I’ve traced branches to places including Tiszafüred, Egyek, and Boldva, but several lines stop in the 18th or 19th century because I can’t find earlier records or I’m unsure where to look next.
I’ve been using sources like FamilySearch, Ancestry, church records, and civil records where available, but I feel like I’m missing something.
