I sacrificed my job to save my manager who threw me under the bus

I sacrificed my job to save my manager who threw me under the bus

Scrambled tofu, impossible meat, and falafel in a flour tortilla

I served as a waiter at a really nice vegan restaurant in a big city 2–3 days/week. My main job is remote, and I'm on my computer all day, so it's a good way to improve my communication skills and get on my feet. I genuinely enjoy serving and try my best to be an honest, hard-working employee. I go out of my way to make everyone else's jobs easier, especially since I'm young and energetic, and a lot of my coworkers rely on this for their living, have kids, live stressful lives, etc.

My partner and I have decided to move away from the city to try someplace new, so this upcoming week was going to be my last (I gave my boss a very generous notice, of course).

This night, I seated a large party, and the bill was in the hundreds. They all loved me and gave generous tipper vibes. After they left, the check was nowhere to be found. Nobody knew where it went, and we even dug through the trash to make sure. Nothing. Keep in mind, it's only me and 1 other server, and the tips are pooled, so my poor coworker is also losing out on a lot of money.

When it's clear we can't find it, I go to the manager and say something like "I have to put the tip as 0% since the bill is missing, right?" To my surprise, they say "No, you can put whatever you think is right." At first, this sounded a bit unethical, but both my coworker and manager were essentially pressuring me not to put 0%, so I didn't. We decided on 20% since they were a large party, and I was supposed to add a mandatory gratuity in the first place but forgot. I realize now that this was irresponsible and immature of me. The pressure got to me, and it was very clear that these guests probably wouldn't even look at their bank statement, let alone fight the charges (assuming they even tipped less than 20% in the first place). Still not right, I know, but that was my thought process at the time.

A few days pass, and my boss, the owner of the restaurant, asks me what happened. I realize that if I tell her the true story, my manager and coworker may get in trouble. Meanwhile, I have like 2 or 3 days left to work before I leave. So, I decide to tell the story, but leave out the part where my manager and coworker actively tell me to leave a tip. I tell my boss that I informed the table of the automatic 20% large party charge when I handed them their bill (lie), but that they gave me their card without even looking at the bill (true). I essentially take full responsibility for the entire decision.

A day passes, and my boss responds, saying that this is a huge violation of their policies and that they refunded the table's tip, and I will not be receiving any of that money. They also say "[The Manager] explicitly told you not to add the 20% gratuity if the check was lost." Excuse me?? They, in fact, explicitly told me NOT to put 0% on the bill.

Despite my blood boiling, I decided to be the bigger man and still take the fall plus I apologize profusely. That manager was honestly a great person to work with. What they did here was super shitty, and I wake up in the middle of the night sometimes and consider revealing the truth to my boss. I'm not even sure if it would make a difference at this point.

Although I wasn't technically fired, I wasn't scheduled to work my last week, which I consider being fired. Every boss I've ever had has adored me, and I've never been fired before, so I feel horrible. I know at the end of the day, this was all still my fault, but the lie that my manager told makes it sound like I deliberately disobeyed an order which is not my character at all. I was the one who pulled the trigger and put in the tip, but I would never have done it if they told me not to. I know it's just a dumb serving job in a city that I'll probably never live in again, but I've always been considered a great server, and this was a huge blow to my ego and morale. I was planning to serve in the new city that I'm moving to, but now I don't think I will.

I'm already halfway over it, but I feel I needed to write it all out somewhere. Thanks for listening to my rant.

TLDR: My restaurant manager convinced me to add a tip to a lost check and then told my boss that they explicitly told me not to. I went along with it and took the fall since I was leaving soon anyway.

Unpopular opinion: Eating vegan at mostly non-vegan restaurants is important

The best thing that you can do is support fully vegan restaurants, but is it not also important to create a demand for vegan food at non-vegan restaurants?

Isn't that the whole point of veganism? Every individual can make a difference in the world, and if we all work together, we can make big changes?

I see a lot of posts here of people feeling bad about having to order a vegan meal at a restaurant with lots of meat, but in my eyes, that's good! If nobody orders the vegan options, they'll get rid of it. But if they have even one vegan option, someone who may have otherwise ordered meat may try it out. Am I crazy to think this?

Are there any schools of philosophy or philosophers who touched on Satisficing?

I've recently been doing deep research into the practice of satisficing (= satisfy + suffice), which is where you effectively live your life choosing the "good enough" option rather than trying to choose the optimal choice. Studies have shown that this technique leads to more happiness and satisfaction in the long run.

I'm curious if any philosophies touch on this same idea? The only ones I can think of are perhaps stoicism or hedonism. Maybe Epicurianism? I'd like to get a more traditional take on similar ideas if anyone has any resources/suggestions.

A website that tells you pricing for any service/app

Sometimes apps, websites, gyms, or digital products make it really, really hard to find out what their pricing is. Or they hide pricing options (such as a lifetime subscription) on a completely separate page from the main pricing page.

Is there a website where I can look up almost anything, and it will give me a comprehensive chart of all the pricing options?

Is there a way to better differentiate headings?

Is there a way to make different levels of headings stand out from one another? As it is by default, they all look nearly identical, and it's impossible to tell which heading is a main heading or a second, third, etc

How do famous CEOs maintain emails?

How do they make sure they don't get leaked? Do they just hire someone to sort through 1,000 emails a day on their behalf?

one-time skip undo send delay

I love the undo send delay, but if I close my macbook directly after sending an email, the email will not send. This leads to moments when I send an email and want to close my laptop to put in a bag, but I have to wait 30 seconds before I can do it.

Is there a way to skip this dealy just ONCE? To be clear, I do not want to change the send delay in the settings. I just want a button or keybind to bypass it on a case-by-case basis

Google Sites is the best free way to make a basic portfolio site

I know way too many people paying $20/month just to host a basic website with photos, gifs, and videos. Unless you have a shop or super complicated code on your site, this is completely unnecessary. Google Sites is 100% free, can be linked to a custom domain, can have embedded HTML code, embedded forums (contact forums), etc.

Adobe Portfolio is similar in terms of ease of use, but it's linked to your Adobe account, and I don't have a lot of faith in the future of that company.

Older versions of Adobe programs are not faster. Stop saying they are.

It is very popular to use older versions of Adobe software because they're "faster" yet I have never found this to be remotely true.

For context, I'm a motion and graphic designer, and I've been using Adobe's software for over 7 years. I haven't used their programs on Windows in 5+ years, so maybe it's a different story over there, but at least on Mac, newer versions are consistently faster and more optimized.

Don't get me wrong. Adobe's software in general is horribly buggy and unoptimized, but compared to previous versions of themselves, they've gotten way way better.

I once had a client who insisted I use older versions of Premiere and Audition for their projects because they're "better and faster" and my god it was awful. I want to say the Audition version was one of the first and the Premiere Pro version was from like 7 years ago. I could hardly work on them, they were so slow. Audition especially took multiple MINUTES to upload a 50 mb audio file, whereas my new version was instant.

Another time, I worked right next to one of these people who always used an older version of After Effects for "stability concerns." The amount of times their program crashed was daily, whereas I get maybe one or two a month while working on way more complex projects than them. I was once showing them how to do something, so I opened After Effects and started a new project within 5 seconds, and they said, "How did you open After Effects so fast!?"

I would love someone to do some actual speed tests because I am totally convinced it's all in everyone's heads.

Suspicious Boston housing

I recently requested a tour from a listing on apartments.com. It's around $1200/month for 800+ sq ft, which is incredible for Boston.

I quickly received a very long response from a man with a generic name. GPT Zero claims it's 100% human. He explained how he lives in Florida and had a few bad incidents in the past that cost a lot of money to fix, and he ended with "that is why i don't deal with a third party and even intend sending the keys to anyone.I prefer you deal with me personally.I hope you understand my situation."

Also, the lease was listed as long OR short term, which seems pretty generous for a guy who's gone through so much. He then asked for basic details plus my credit score for the application.

I informed him that I would like to have a tour first, and he said that there is a "registration fee" of $120 because he must hire a manager to give me a tour.

I reverse image searched the photos, and the images showed up on a few other listing sites from 2021, but they could be from previous listings mentioned.

I am extremely skeptical of this, but my partner claims that paying just to be able to tour the place isn't super uncommon here. Is there any proof that I can demand or anything else I can do to confirm the legitimacy of this?

Edit: Consensus: Scam. Thanks everyone

Switching to Safari

I know this sub is filled with people switching, and I'm actually one of the few people who is not freaking out. My main reason for leaving is to get away from Chromium and use a browser that is more lightweight.

I know that Zen exists and is great and Firefox-based, but I thought I'd give safari a shot since it's so minimal and lightweight.

To my surprise, I actually love it. It has vertical tabs, profiles, in-website searching via the url bar, and all the extensions I need (which isn't many, I'll admit). My only gripe is that tabs don't save when the browser is closed completely, but because of the low performance cost, it's not necessary to ever close it anyway.

After 3 years of Arc, I think I've outgrown it. If anyone else is looking for a browser and doesn't mind the niche features stripped away, I recommend trying it.

Why don't apps ever have an option for username AND email?

I use Bitwarden and Apple passwords and by far the most annoying issue is the fact that neither of them offer an option to add an email AND a separate username to an account, as far as I know.

Websites that don't accept emails in the username field are becoming more and more rare, but they're still out there. I use Hide My Email for almost everything, so whenever I can't use it as my username, I have to add it to the notes, which is a really annoying extra step. Anyone else have this problem?

What happened to the command+F ai tool?

The only actually useful ai tool I've ever used: you could hit command F to find something but actually talk to it and ask it questions about the page/article you're looking at. It could even be used in PDFs opened through the browser. I used to use this all the time. What the heck happened to it?

Manizales or Pereira Colombia?

Does anyone have any experience in either of these 2 cities? According to nomadlio stats, they’re very affordable, walkable, and safe cities in Colombia with good internet speeds and restaurant scenes.

Other recommendations for safe cities in SA with good public transit/walkability are welcome

Possible major security vulnerability here... I sometimes receive random emails in my inbox even though my email is not included in the recipients list. It always goes to my iCloud inbox so I assume it's a vulnerability with one of my addresses or with apple mail app itself.

For example, I just got one from the actual Instagram no-reply email that was meant to be sent privately to the owner of their account. I now have their username, email, and authentication code (albeit probably expired by now) to their account.

I haven't gotten anything crazy yet. Mostly just automatic emails and newsletters. Still, is there any way I can report this or something before I accidentally get sent the Area 51 floorplan?
