When should you stop contributing to investments?

Say you are 30yo and have 2mm invested in some ETF (VFV, XEQT, etc). But you make a very average income at like 70k. The compounding your nest-egg will do will overshadow any contributions you’ll make. At that point are you better off spending that income on other things?

What qualifies as a coast job?

Is it a part-time job? A job that cannot earn more than x a year? A job which you have to think 0 about after work?

For monthly millionaires if they send an email to winners, why check the app to check if you won?

Feels unnecessary? Like if I don't get an email by x time Thursday, I know I lost?

Is it time to jump ship?

28yo software engineer. 580k invested.

From 22-25yo I worked for the government making 80k. Contributed 3 years to a pension indexed to inflation. Its rule is after 30 years of work + being 60yo you can receive the pension without penalty.

At 26yo I took a job offer in private for 140k and 5k retirement matching (its on NYSE). I knew in my second year salary would drop to 120k since I had a sign-on bonus, but I figured I’d still be making more than my old job and assumed in my third year I’d be promoted to senior and earning around 170k (what the average senior here makes).

Fast forward 2.5 years I'm not senior, still making 120k, and the company has slashed salaries for new hires and is stalling promotions for myself and coworkers.

I now have a job offer at my old federal job for 115k. While the salary is less than my current job, it’s got a pension. I’ve had candid talks with my manager who explains the earliest I’d see a promo (meaning raise) is Q1 2027 and even that is unlikely. Frankly, morale is low. Everyone knows the company is shrinking each year and its best days are behind it. The only upside I see is brand name and experience with modern technology for my resume.

My plan has always been to grind and earn in private while younger then return to federal work for family life (e.g. 33-35yo) but that plan assumed private paid much more than federal which currently isn’t the case. Every year in private is also 1 less pensionable year. The ideal scenario is finding a higher paying job in private but nobody is hiring right now. I also feel like if I go back to government I'd stay at least a year which loses a prime year where I have energy to grind. What should I do?

Is SpaceX going to be included in VEQT?

I don't know anything about the company, but is it somehow going to be included in VEQT? I don't like the speculative stuff and it seems overvalued.

Are you bullet-proof with a paid off house and government job pension?

It seems like a very achievable goal and in Canada we don't have the same concerns about healthcare as the United States.

How much of high-risk investing is a reaction to stagnant wages?

There is a feeling of being behind and needing to catch up. Especially when Reddit is filled with high income earners sharing their salary. Investing in some tech company seems like a great way to make a quick buck, especially when those posters usually work in tech.

At what age is it detrimental for a man to live with his parents?

Assume they have a good enough job and savings to rent a decent apartment and invest each month. So, they have the financial side mostly figured out. With that angle covered, at what age is it detrimental for a man to live with his parents?

Adding a stand-up shower + toilet in basement… how long should this take?

Please, tell me if this is a TERRIBLE idea.

We have a family wedding in 5 weeks and expect guests to be here in 4 weeks. More than a couple in the basement.

We were hoping to add a stand-up shower + toilet in the basement before the guests arrive, so 4 weeks. We'd like tiles, walls, door, etc. We have a single family home with a totally unfinished basement (we plan to do the rest later) but think another washroom in the basement would be nice for the guests.

Is it feasible for the average contractor to complete this for a reasonable price on time?

The only way young people can get ahead nowadays is delaying moving out

28M and everyone my age I know in real life with savings this sub would call good did the same thing: prolong living at home.

I’m ignoring the special cases of high income earners or those who got inheritances in their 20s. You can still get ahead with basic knowledge on that setup.

I’m talking about the average person who graduates at 22/23 and squeezes a 60k job out of this economy. If you leave home after a year or two how much your saving shrinks immensely. If you stay home 5+ years however you can get the start on the downpayment or retirement most people want.

What would happen to the economy if the first $100k everyone earned each year was INCOME tax-free?

CPP, EI and any other taxes is still there. But income tax specifically is removed.

Do prices just move up proportionally? Or does purchasing power improve? Do we just shift the conversation to complaining about what’s still taxing us?

How fast did you see change?

I was told I’d need to wear invisalign 2 years. I had braces before if it matters.

I’m going into week 5 now (fifth tray) and I don’t see any visible changes. I’m not upset, just excited to fix my teeth and curious when I’ll start seeing a difference!
