I hate my job but the market is terrible. What do I do?

Abruptly quit? I have enough savings for a while but it’s almost impossible to get a job again in this market.

Quiet quit until they fire me? That’ll leave a bad taste in your coworkers and managers mouth if you ever want to reach out after spending X years at the company.

Interview at other places? I’ve been doing that for MONTHS and no offers (see point 1).

Any other devs in this position / have suggestions (serious replies only please)?

2011 Honda Civic needs power steering line replaced

My mechanic just told me I need to replace the power steering line due to rust. I was quoted $520 for parts and labor. Is that lower than average, average or above average in price?

I am in Canada if it matters

Anyone take a mental health sabbatical? What did it look like?

Title, basically. In tech and I know the market is shit but I think I need a break…28M/600k invested

Is taking a sabbatical right now a bad idea?

28M. 600k invested.

Software engineer with 5.5YOE. 3YOE at previous company 2.5YOE at current. I've been grinding trying to get a senior promo at this company. After each project they keep delaying it / saying I need to do more. When I talk to my teammates who got the same promo 2024ish (when the economy was better) the work it took to get there sounded exactly like what I've done if not less. They also say they're surprised I'm not senior yet because of the responsibility I've assumed. Talking to engineers outside our team it seems their promos (although for more senior levels) are also being delayed.

I figured if they won't give it to me I'll go elsewhere, so the last 4 months I've been studying + interviewing. Got 3 big tech interviews, all 5+ rounds, but got rejected by all after the final round. Doing that while doing my day job I'm officially burnt out. I am having trouble keeping up with my role's workload physically/emotionally.

I am now thinking of quitting, moving in with parents, and taking a sabbatical. It does feel like giving up a bit, but if I am honest with myself I've failed/neglected other parts of my life while grinding (travelling, dating, pursuing hobbies). The idea is recharge and reflect what I want to do with those deficits in mind. Perhaps find a coast-fire gig or keep applying to big tech. Idk. Pretty fatigued overall and don't have the soundest judgement.

Am I looking at this wrong? Is there another option I should pursue?

Anyone else prefer hybrid over remote?

I wouldn’t dare bring this up at work since we’re 100% remote (I like my job for other reasons) and everyone seems in love with it but does anyone else quietly feel this way?

I find this die-hard desire for remote work to be another example of a broader North American problem: decreased social interaction. We keep coming up with ways to be alone?

Streaming instead of the movies, online shopping instead of the mall, sending Instagram reels instead of drinks with your friend.

Perhaps I’m extroverted, or not active enough outside of work, but I think hybrid is a better mix. A couple days a week for appointments, errands and general puttering around, but not totally cutting out the healthy socialization that comes with going to a workplace.

Anyone else feel good about their savings, remember they have to buy a house, then cringe?

Maybe “have to” is the wrong phrase but you get my point. Any home you want to raise kids in (assuming you’re in a metropolitan city) is gonna erase what you built real fast.

Sure you get something in return but I envy those previous generations who didn’t have to empty their life savings..

How much should this fix cost?

My doors kickstand broke off and the door was opened too wide. This caused the door knob to make a hole in the wall (it didn’t go completely through, so a bit smaller than the door knob itself). How much should a fix for this cost if I hire labor?

I’m in Canada

Best places to print something Sunday morning?

I screwed up and need to find a store that can print some papers ASAP. I can pay whatever just need it done, ideally before noon. Any places you recommend? I'm in the East York area.

When should you stop contributing to investments?

Say you are 30yo and have 2mm invested in some ETF (VFV, XEQT, etc). But you make a very average income at like 70k. The compounding your nest-egg will do will overshadow any contributions you’ll make. At that point are you better off spending that income on other things?

What qualifies as a coast job?

Is it a part-time job? A job that cannot earn more than x a year? A job which you have to think 0 about after work?

For monthly millionaires if they send an email to winners, why check the app to check if you won?

Feels unnecessary? Like if I don't get an email by x time Thursday, I know I lost?

Is it time to jump ship?

28yo software engineer. 580k invested.

From 22-25yo I worked for the government making 80k. Contributed 3 years to a pension indexed to inflation. Its rule is after 30 years of work + being 60yo you can receive the pension without penalty.

At 26yo I took a job offer in private for 140k and 5k retirement matching (its on NYSE). I knew in my second year salary would drop to 120k since I had a sign-on bonus, but I figured I’d still be making more than my old job and assumed in my third year I’d be promoted to senior and earning around 170k (what the average senior here makes).

Fast forward 2.5 years I'm not senior, still making 120k, and the company has slashed salaries for new hires and is stalling promotions for myself and coworkers.

I now have a job offer at my old federal job for 115k. While the salary is less than my current job, it’s got a pension. I’ve had candid talks with my manager who explains the earliest I’d see a promo (meaning raise) is Q1 2027 and even that is unlikely. Frankly, morale is low. Everyone knows the company is shrinking each year and its best days are behind it. The only upside I see is brand name and experience with modern technology for my resume.

My plan has always been to grind and earn in private while younger then return to federal work for family life (e.g. 33-35yo) but that plan assumed private paid much more than federal which currently isn’t the case. Every year in private is also 1 less pensionable year. The ideal scenario is finding a higher paying job in private but nobody is hiring right now. I also feel like if I go back to government I'd stay at least a year which loses a prime year where I have energy to grind. What should I do?
