Recently, a controversy broke out on Bluesky after the East Asian artist Yunayu drew gender-bent fan art of Malfoy from Harry Potter. Some Bluesky users viewed the fan art as “extremely transphobic,” arguing that it would draw more attention to Harry Potter and, in turn, give its author, J.K. Rowling, more attention because of her views on trans issues.

Those accounts then proceeded to attack Yunayu and lecture her about how some people in the West perceive support for anything related to Harry Potter as transphobic, arguing that, as an East Asian artist, she should have known better before drawing it. The backlash eventually led Yunayu to delete the fan art from Bluesky, post an apology, and later delete her Bluesky account entirely.
