OTD: Blackburn Rovers 0-2 Arsenal - 12 October, 1996 - Wenger Secures Debut Win

On 12 October 1996 at Ewood Park, Arsène Wenger's long-awaited first match in charge of Arsenal ends 2-0 against Ray Harford's Blackburn - a fourth straight Premiership win, and the beginning of everything.

Three minutes in, a searching cross is headed down and the striker wrong-foots Nicky Marker before curling past Tim Flowers from twelve yards. Blackburn press: Tim Sherwood's header clips the bar from a Chris Sutton loft, and Flowers denies a second when a turn and shot looks destined for the net.

Six minutes into the second half a newly signed midfielder engineers a break, exchanges passes, and drives a ball into the channel; the striker's first touch looks heavy, Flowers rushes out, and the chip over the stranded keeper makes it two. Wenger praises the professionalism and pronounces himself pleased.

Throwback Quiz: Arsenal 2-3 Leeds United - Kewell strike helps Leeds effectively avoid relegation

On 4 May 2003 at Highbury, Leeds beat Arsenal 3-2 to save themselves, and handed Manchester United the title on the way out.

Peter Reid's side arrive 16th on 41 points with two games left, level with Bolton and West Ham after the Hammers beat Chelsea the day before. Arsenal have to win to keep their title defence alive.Alan Smith is suspended, so the captain steps up into midfield and a centre-back comes into the side.

Five minutes in, Harry Kewell bends in the opener after a team-mate's pass cuts out Keown. Henry equalises on 31 minutes.

Three minutes after the break, a low free-kick deflects off Ashley Cole and Gilberto to restore the lead. It's the taker's third season in a row scoring at Highbury.

Bergkamp levels again on 63 minutes, and only the goalkeeper keeps Leeds in it. Then, with two minutes left, the captain plays in the striker. He lopes past Luzhny and drives into the far corner for his 19th league goal of the season.

Leeds move to 44 points and are effectively safe. Arsenal's defeat makes United champions, so one result settles both ends of the table.

On this day, October 3, 1999, Chelsea humble Manchester United 5-0

Stamford Bridge erupts inside thirty seconds. Massimo Taibi rushes from his line, fails to claim a cross, and a free header drops into an empty net.

Midway through the first half another header from a right-wing delivery makes it two, and when Nicky Butt is sent off for kicking out after a clash near halfway, United's afternoon collapses.

The treble winners look lost at the Bridge. After the break a spilled shot is tucked away for three; a low cross is turned into his own net by Henning Berg under pressure from a chasing striker; and late on substitute Jody Morris finishes off a move involving the other replacements to make it five.

Crowds who waited months for United to slip finally get their wish as a long unbeaten league run dies in west London.

On this day, 2002: Chelsea 2-3 West Ham - Paolo Di Canio scores sublime volley

28 September, 2002 at Stamford Bridge, West Ham beat Chelsea 3-2 in the Premier League, a first win of the season so cold the Bridge leaves wondering how the basement club ever wrote that script.

Hasselbaink puts Chelsea ahead from the spot after twenty minutes, but Defoe, an early substitute, pokes home the equaliser before the break when Cudicini parries a corner scramble.

Then Di Canio takes over. Three minutes into the second half he flicks the ball up outside the area and volleys from about thirty yards, Cudicini beaten before he has time to set. Zola's sublime free-kick levels it with sixteen left. The Bridge thinks a point is coming.

Di Canio refuses. Six minutes from time he slips through after a defensive muddle and finishes from an acute angle for the winner, then urges every teammate to the final whistle. It is chaotic, mercurial, and thoroughly early-noughties West Ham: trail, equalise, volley, survive, nick it late.

On this day, 28 September 2003: Charlton 3-2 Liverpool - Kevin Lisbie scores hat-trick. Can you name the rest of the starting lineup?

On 28 September 2003 at The Valley, Charlton stun Liverpool 3-2, and Kevin Lisbie walks off with a hat-trick that Gérard Houllier's starry side will not forget in a hurry.

Liverpool open it early when a clever through-ball is lifted over the home keeper. Lisbie levels after a loose defensive moment strands Dudek, then puts the Addicks ahead before the break when a rebound falls kindly eight yards out.

A soft penalty levels it again early in the second half. The Valley holds its breath as Liverpool scent a turnaround, and the home keeper keeps Charlton alive with a flying save from the edge of the box. With eight minutes left comes the gallop.

Lisbie collects just inside his own half, shrugs off Finnan, and runs almost unchallenged before curling past Dudek from twenty yards. Alan Curbishley's side take a first home win of the campaign, and the hat-trick man leaves to a standing ovation.

Charlton finish seventh that season. Liverpool end fourth, still wondering how a Valley afternoon got away from them.

Classic Match: Roma 4-5 Inter, 3 May 1999 - complete the starting lineup!

Zdeněk Zeman's Roma and Roy Hodgson's Inter trade blows in a nine-goal Olimpico thriller that never quite settles. Early on a defence-splitting pass sends the No.9 clear to open the scoring, and another assist sets up a volleyed second.

Francesco Totti converts a penalty to make it 1-2, before a chip from a right-back's cut-back restores the two-goal cushion at the break. After the restart Paulo Sérgio and Marco Delvecchio drag Roma level within minutes. The visitors edge ahead again when a cut-back is finished into an empty net, only for Eusebio Di Francesco to make it 4-4.

Deep into the contest a free-kick is met with a decisive header - 4-5. The visiting goalkeeper's injury even brings on a young Sébastien Frey mid-chaos. Roma finish the 1998-99 season fifth; Inter eighth.

On this day: Spurs 2–3 Chelsea, 16 Sep 2001

On 16 September 2001 at White Hart Lane, Claudio Ranieri's Chelsea leave with a 3-2 that somehow still feels unfinished. Just before the break a midfielder rounds Neil Sullivan to the byline and the cross is headed in at the back post for the opener.

Teddy Sheringham levels after the restart, initially denied by the keeper and then burying the rebound, and for a stretch the hosts look like ending their Premiership hoodoo against the Blues. Instead Steve Dunn awards a hotly contested penalty when Ledley King is judged to have brought the striker down — Spurs rage, the spot-kick is converted, and the Lane turns ugly.

Sheringham's 100th Premiership goal in the last minute of normal time looks to have salvaged a point. But despite a Chelsea midfielder getting a red for lashing out at Chris Perry, deep in stoppage time, a centre-back heads home from a late corner to steal the points.

Glenn Hoddle fumes at the referee; Ranieri pockets the win with ten men. Chelsea finish 2001-02 sixth; Spurs ninth.

On this day: 11 Sept 1993, Arsenal 4-0 Ipswich - Kevin Campbell scores first PL hat trick for Arsenal

On 11 September 1993 at Highbury, Arsenal put Ipswich to the sword 4-0 and Kevin Campbell walks off with a Premier League hat-trick, the first Arsenal player to score a treble in the competition.

The strike partnership gets busy either side of the half-hour: his partner opens the scoring from Campbell's assist around the thirty-minute mark, then Campbell adds a second before the break to make it two-nil.

After the interval he completes the treble inside a quarter of an hour, first from a left-back's supply and then from the partner's return favour, Ipswich's back line looking increasingly stranded as George Graham's side keep pouring forward.

Craig Forrest is left picking the ball out four times while Joe Worrall keeps the cards in his pocket and the home crowd settles into the kind of afternoon that looks routine only after the fact.

It is Arsenal's first hat-trick of the Premier League era, confirmation rather than surprise. Graham's side go on to finish fourth. Ipswich go home with nothing but the journey, and end the season nineteenth.

On this day: Cole brace helps Newcastle beat Chelsea 4-2, 1994

On 10 September 1994 at St James' Park, Newcastle go five from five with a 4-2 win over Chelsea and equal their best start in eighty-six years, which is the sort of afternoon that ruins a Royal Antwerp scout's week. Andy Cole reacts quicker than Jakob Kjeldbjerg to a lob from deep, lopes a few strides and crashes a left-footer top bins past Dmitri Kharin.

Chelsea equalise when Dennis Wise's shot is followed in and poached by former Magpie, Gavin Peacock. Steve Clarke concedes a soft penalty, judged to have pushed Cole. Kharin saves the penalty but the rebound is stroked home. Paul Furlong heads John Spencer's cross and the home keeper can only help it in off the underside of the bar.

Just before half time, Dennis Wise sees red - the Chelsea midfielder is shown a second yellow for giving the linesman a piece of his mind. Early in the second half, Newcastle go ahead after their penalty taker thumps home a low cross from the left.

With twenty-five minutes to go, Cole combines with another midfielder and pokes the ball into the bottom right corner to make it 4-2. He could have had his hat trick later on, but hits the ball straight into the keepers arms when through on goal.

Kevin Keegan calls the opener a classic among two hundred and fifty since he arrived. Keegan goes home with Manager of the Month already in the pocket. Hoddle goes home wondering how you play well and still get thrashed.

Newcastle would remain unbeaten until the end of October and top of the league until early November, but unfortunately the toon army fall away and finish the season in 6th place.

OTD 1996, Leeds United 0-4 Man United - Karel Poborsky scores a bullet

On 7 September 1996 at Elland Road, Manchester United dismantle Leeds 4-0 and leave Howard Wilkinson staring at the trapdoor. An early corner ends in farce: Nigel Martyn claws at a header, Ian Harte clears off the line, and the ball smacks the keeper in the back of the head for an own goal.

Manchester United then miss a penalty scuffing it wide after David Wetherall hauls down a United attacker, much to Elland Road's delight, but it's not long before Poborsky's weaving run picks out a midfielder who slots low past Martyn just after the break.

The Czech midfielder then breaks his Premiership duck with a rising finish after he is slipped through, finally, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's cross to the far post is met by an attacker who guides one in with the outside of the boot from a tight angle and strike the Messiah pose in front of the Kop. The Czech comes off to applause from the home fans, which is rarely the Elland Road special. Ferguson goes home happy. Wilkinson goes home with a lot of explaining to do.

Anyone for a pint of wine? OTD 2016 Slovakia 0-1 England: Allardyce's One Game

On this day, 10 years ago, 4 September 2016 in Trnava, Sam Allardyce's England career lasted one night, and they very nearly failed to score in any of it.

A reset after Iceland, a World Cup qualifier against a Slovakia side who had already held them at the Euros, and for an hour it is the same old stodge.

One forward collects a 116th cap, more than any outfield player the country has ever had, then drops so deep he might as well have brought a flask. Another is kicked from pillar to post and barely sees the ball.

Martin Skrtel sees red for a stamp, but still England cannot land a punch. Wingers keep running into frustrating cul-de-sacs, and the England keeper has almost nothing to save, and the home side manage one shot all night, which misses.

Lallana smashes one against the post and England have a goal ruled out for offside in the last 10 minutes which shouldn’t have been because a Slovakia defender poked it towards the England forward.

Five minutes into added time the ball breaks for Adam Lallana, who fires a first England goal under the keeper with the last kick of the night. Allardyce bounces down the touchline like a man who has got away with it.

For three weeks, he had. A 1-0, a perfect record, and by month's end Big Sam was gone.

How many other England players can you name?
