i'll never belong to this world but i can still live in it and write about it

i'll never belong to this world but i can still live in it and write about it

i'm an international student in lebanon for uni. i get crushes on "worlds" and this is one; i'm not crushing on this one rn but it is pretty cool and i wanted to share.

lebanon's official language is arabic, but lebanese speak a mixture of arabic, english, and french, sometimes mixing them in the same sentence, and "hi, kifak, ça va?" is a common joke about it. i'm writing a paper for a class about how lebanese teachers and students switching so frequently between languages affects non-arabic-speaking international students at my university.

i also love languages, that that's part of this. i'm learning lebanese arabic, i think i might be a2 by now? anyways yeah this linguistic world is interesting to me and i think in another life i could fall in love with it.

sometimes i think i don't have ticker tape synesthesia any more and then i remember i'm learning arabic and i differentiate spoken words visually

the words mean "present tense" and "past tense" respectively, though i'm pretty sure the past tense one is misspelled. that's how i visualize it, though. in arabic class we're currently learning past tense verbs and when the teacher talks about which tense we'll be reviewing, i remember which tense is which because the past one is shorter and has sharper color contrast. so that's interesting i think.

also, i don't know if the colors my brain has assigned to the letters that don't have english equivalents are from the sounds themselves or how they're written in arabizi. i don't know if ع is yellow because 3 is yellow or because it's a yellow sound. i don't know if ح is brownish red because 7 is bright red or because h is reddish brown. also, weirdly, ذ is blue, while ð is brown. i think when i get better with the abjad i'll make a post about the differences.

some thoughts about language

for a class i have to prepare and teach a language lesson and my teacher says i can do toki pona but i'm learning arabic rn and i'm worried i'll just immediately go "hello, ana jan Mokute, shu li nimik?"

idk i just find it interesting how even when i can't speak a language well or don't speak it much out loud i somehow manage to find myself thinking in it and also how my brain categorizes languages into "english" and "not english"

I wanna join the discussion but am banned there so i'd like to start one here. Obv there are a lot of negative feelings about Cavill's Superman here but I would like to have a more balanced conversation, if possible. OP had some good thoughts imo, [here's the post](https://www.reddit.com/r/SnyderCut/comments/1szvtts/what\_separates\_these\_two\_apart\_from\_the\_obvious/?utm\_source=share&utm\_medium=mweb3x&utm\_name=mweb3xcss&utm\_term=1&utm\_content=share\_button).

the pool table is in the caf, and the staff members in question don't necessarily belong to the uni but mostly to nearby related things; they hang out in the caf sometimes and their kids run around on campus, which is usually fine because there's not much for them to break outside. i don't know what happened to the table, my best guess is some toddler holding the stick over their head and repeatedly jabbing at it. we got new sticks not long ago and they almost immediately lost their tips. the children HAVE been known to eat the chalk, i don't know if that's what happened to it this time. my uni is small and doesn't have the money to be replacing this stuff often, i have no idea why this is allowed
