Have to live close to work due to being a new driver

As the title suggests, I’m a relatively new driver and only got my license a few months ago and have never been on the highway. I recently got a job in a new town and I have to move for it, I initially liked an apartment and wanted to move closer to downtown but my work is all the way in the very isolated suburbs which are 25 minutes from downtown.

I work night shift and figured I can’t drive 25 minutes (45 minutes-1 hour without the highway) in the dark 5 days a week and thus have to be away from the fun. I can barely even see at night and this route goes over a bridge on a lake and a flyover. My car isn’t in the best shape either to be able to make that drive every day and I can’t afford a new one. I hate that something I can’t control is forcing me to make a major life decision I’m not happy with. This whole thing sucks.

Should I move closer to work or downtown?

TL;DR Moving to a new city and torn between moving to the fun part of town or near work

I have the option of choosing between two places: one a 7 minute drive to work and the other a 26 minute (45 minute- 1 hour with traffic) drive to work.
I’ll also be working swing shift hours (1-9:30) so most likely avoiding the high traffic hours. This job is also a temp job.

The apartment near work is super nice and a bit cheaper but in a super isolated area, devoid of any culture and consisting of mostly families and is 25 minutes away from downtown.

I’m young, single, in my 20s and the other apartment is in the fun part of town near activities, downtown, etc. similar in price, although a bit smaller and in a slightly sketchier area.

Which one should I pick? I wanna be able to date and do fun stuff easily but also should I put myself through that commute 5 days a week?

Cheap car AC repair?

Anyone know of shops that can fix a car ac for a reasonable price? It’s blowing hot air after a while and might need a recharge or something else, not sure.

Anyone have experience with the Hamilton apartments on panther trail? Seems too good to be true and there’s only 26 reviews on there.

Is the commute to Austin doable?

I’ll be starting a new job in north Austin (think near Pflugerville) in a few weeks and it’s a contract role so I’m not sure it’s worth relocating. Is the commute doable? It’s about one hour on I-35 and I’ll also be working swing shift so realistically leaving my house around noon and coming back around 9 pm. Is the commute worth it or soul crushing? I’m applying for other jobs actively so thought I’d do this for a month or so while I reevaluate next steps.

Sick of interviewing with Thermo Fisher

In the past month, I’ve made it to the final round interview for 4 different roles with Thermo Fisher. No matter how well the interview goes and I walk out feeling like I closed it, I get rejected at the end. It’s ridiculous because they have 4-5 interview rounds and I spend a lot of time preparing and get my hopes up only to get denied. The interviews themselves have told me they loved me and my answers were perfect.

I heard Thermo mostly hires internals so I feel like I’m given an interview just for the statistics and denied in favor of someone they already had picked. I asked for feedback on one of my interviews and they said that other candidates have more sales experience which was evident in my application well before interview #1 let alone stringing me along till interview #6. Should I just stop applying with them? It’s a company I’ve wanted to work with for a really long time but I’m sick of wasting my time.

Another successful Walmart trip

I absolutely LOATHE driving to Walmart cause it’s far away from me and involves a lot of complex turns and busy intersections. I’d usually go to Target even though it’s more expensive just because it’s 3 minutes away from me.

This time I needed something only available at Walmart and met the pickup minimum so I decided to conquer it once again! I have only been there thrice by myself in total. So I woke up at 7 am to avoid the weekend rush and got there and back with no issues! I decided I didn’t care what the other cars were doing in their lanes and my mission was to just stay between the lines and go when it’s clear.

Should I relocate for a temp job?

Got offered a temporary job in a city about 2 hours away from me. The pay is only $24/hour and it’s a large city so I’m gonna be struggling to make ends meet. They said the position can be anywhere between 6-12 months with a potential for renewal. Also this job is perfect and will sponsor my work visa.

I live in the country and have a remote job right now which pays $22 but is a dead end job, I absolutely hate it and plan on quitting soon (think in about two weeks ) and they may or may not sponsor my visa, but at the same time I don’t wanna risk everything for a job with no stability. Is it worth it?

Best sit down restaurants?

What are some good sit down restaurants preferably near east or downtown Austin which don’t have $80 entrees and have at least some vegetarian options? I looked it up and I mostly get suggested bars. Also not a fan of Mexican food.

‘Immigrant parent’ jokes are not funny

Has anyone seen those stand up comedians whose whole shtick is to basically just make fun of their immigrant parent’s naïveté? Can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen those videos where they’d imitate their parent’s accent only to have the crowd erupt in laughter or act like they’re a child who doesn’t understand basic things. “Oh my god my parent told that person to CLOSE the light bahahahaha”

And these are always coming from spoiled second generation privileged kids. Your parent grew up in a completely different country and moved to basically an alien land to give you a better life and you make fun of the way they speak and act? It bothers me as a first generation immigrant myself if my kid were to mock my accent for laughs when the corporate and social world already does so. Of course you grew up here in American culture and can easily adapt and speak like the majority of people here. Good for you. Doesn’t make you superior and your parents who gave you that life, lesser than.

When it comes from the community itself, it encourages the rest of the world to laugh at them too and make it a big joke just like Apu from Simpsons. For the most part it’s immigrant kids trying to fit in with the white population by mocking their very own roots.

Thermo Fisher interview timeline?

Had a final round panel interview with Thermo fisher today, the one with the first and the third panelist went pretty well but the second one was a bit shaky. I’m trying not to get my hopes up because they mentioned it themselves that they mostly hire internally and they just interview other folks to seem ‘fair’. Realistically, when can I expect to hear back and do I have a real shot?

I invested a lot of time in preparing for these 5 interviews in total and jeopardized my current job by taking time off to do these interviews and this is something I really want. I’ve heard awful things about candidates getting ghosted and never hearing back. How was your hiring experience with them?

Long Interview tips?

Got a 90 minute interview with Thermo Fisher coming up! Any tips? So nervous as it’s the final round and I’ve never had such a long interview before. Most likely gonna be a panel interview. What kinda questions should I expect and what kinda questions should I ask them?

Some of y’all need to relearn how four-way stops work

In the 4 months I’ve been here, I’ve been in nearly 12 head on collisions at the four way intersection in Creekside! Some people also blatantly ignore their stop sign and go full speed ahead. IT IS NOT YOUR TURN. THE PERSON WHO GOT TO THE INTERSECTION FIRST GOES FIRST.

I’ve had to become a defensive driver because of some of these clowns. I thought driving here was supposed to be less stressful than Austin. Seriously, go back to driving school. I’ve started to fear for my life just going to Target.

Tubing if I can’t swim?

Planning to go tubing in Landa soon and down the tube chute. I plan on wearing a life jacket but realistically what are the chances of me flipping over and drowning since I can’t swim? My friend is an experienced swimmer but I know the current straight out of the chute is super strong and can pull you under so not sure if she’ll even be able to help me if that happens. Is it a smart idea to go still?
