Some cute bug models I made for my game Centipede Simulator

Some bug models I made for my game Centipede Simulator, all of them are inspired on actual species, but I took a lot of licenses, especially with scale and color palette, so everything makes sense gameplay wise.

Faeland appreciation post

Hey there, I’ve been playing Faeland and had a great time with it. It was on my radar for ages but as it is an early access I haven’t decided to purchase it until recently since I generally had bad experiences with early access games.

As a fair warning I’m a quite old school player and enjoy this approach on games, many of the modern big titles which receive a lot of praise don’t actually click for me for this reason, so if you’re into more casual or straightforward experiences, probably this game wouldn’t be for you.

The last year I’ve had a blast playing Silksong and Zexion, but this year there wasn’t any Metroidvania release which actually clicked for me, so I decided to purchase this one even if it is an Early Access. A positive video from Metroidvania Guru about this game also helped on this decission.

I’m really glad I did, since I had a great time with Faeland, the game is perfectly playable, I haven’t spotted any major bugs, and it gave me a solid +20h exploration experience to beat the game. There are still some missing areas which it is supposed to be included in the 1.0 version and the later areas are a bit rougher than the early ones, reusing some assets, etc. but in general the experience is quite consistent, and I guess that they’ll polish even more the 1.0 version.

Graphics are really beautiful. This was what caught my attention first and it probably was an instant purchase few years ago if it wasn’t an Early Access game. You really can see the love the devs have put on the game visuals.

Exploration is the aspect I’ve enjoyed the most (It is the aspect I enjoy the most on any Metroidvania title, so if a game does it right, there is a good chance that it already got me). Faeland has a 2 layered map which reminded me the Axiom Verge 2 one, in this case it is just an extra layer, not a completely different world with its own particularities, but it adds more depth to the exploration.

Combat is the aspect I’ve enjoyed the least, since controls feel quite clunky, and as you have plenty of health points, you eventually just tank all the enemies, I think I only died a few times on few bosses during the whole playthrough. On the good side, you have plenty of weapons and tools you can use for different approaches, and this is specially important on bosses.

Platforming it is also just OK because of this control clunkiness.

TLDR

An amazing experience if you’re into old school games.

The good: Great exploration and amazing graphics

The bad: Clunky controls which make the combat feel off and platforming is just OK

Concept Art for Dawn of Man + a little backstory

Hi there,

I’ve been quite active on Reddit in gamedev subs these last few years, but I’ve never seen this subreddit before.

I’m a 3D artist, but I’ve studied traditional art and always wanted to be a Concept Artist at a games company… But as you know, Concept Art is the most competitive art role in games and normally only GOAT artists are able to land a job as concept artist, so I had to learn 3D in order to be able to get a toe in the industry's door. It is not easy to land a job as 3D artist either, game industry is very competitive in general, but to create any game requires an army of 3D artists, so the chances are much better.

So, I’m a 3D artist with the heart of a drawer, and I always create my own concept art for my personal work, but I really love when I have the chance to do it for professional work as well. At the beginning of my career I worked for quite big companies so this wasn’t an option then, but later I became a freelancer and worked for smaller companies and on some of them, I had the chance to create concept art to define the aesthetic of the models before executing them, and these last years I’ve co-founded our own indie company and from time to time, when the schedule allows it or when a model is tricky and needs some previous experimentation, I have the chance to do it as well :)

Here is some concept art I made for our game Dawn of Man some years ago, but I’m still pretty proud of those pieces, and as you can guess because of the annotations, I made most of these for other 3D Artists :)

Now that I’ve discovered this subreddit, I think I’ll be around here ;)

Centipede Simulator is now available on Steam!

Hi everyone, I’m Tucho, the dev of Centipede Simulator. I’m a veteran game artist who worked on 20+ released titles across AAA, AA, and indie on PC, console, and mobile.

But about a year and a half ago, I decided to learn the ropes of the other roles necessary to create games completely on my own. First, I made a bunch of little prototypes, and then I started working on a Snake clone just for learning. But I kept adding twists and features, and the project eventually took on a life of its own.

I played the early versions with my partner to test it, and we found it genuinely fun, so I decided to fully flesh it out and make it my first release as a solo dev... And it seems I've managed to cross the finish line! :)

Getting straight to the point, here’s the launch trailer and you can see the feature list below:

  • Multiple game modes: Find your favorite way to play.
  • Couch co-op split-screen: Grab a friend and share the fun.
  • Realistic graphics: Experience the world as a bug like never before.
  • Procedural animation: Watch your centipede, prey, and predators move with lifelike responsiveness. Animations are generated in real time based on their behavior.
  • Full controller support: Grab a controller and kick back.
  • Fixed camera mode: Can help prevent motion sickness.

Centipede Simulator is launching next week!

Hey there! It seems I'm finally crossing the finish line! I'm a veteran game artist who worked on a bunch of released titles, but this is my first attempt as a solo dev. A little over a year ago, when I started learning the ropes of all the other roles needed to make a game alone, I wasn't totally sure I'd pull it off. So it feels a bit surreal to be putting this little game on Steam completely on my own!

The game releases on May 15th, and there's already a demo available if you want to check it out. You can also join the playtest (last chance, I'm closing it early next week!).

This video shows the co-op mode, which is one of the latest features I implemented. You can play the 3 different game modes with a friend, and as long as one player is alive, they can respawn their partner if they manage to eat a yellow ladybug before getting killed. However, since dead centipedes don't disappear, they become obstacles. So the longer you survive, the more crowded and dangerous the arena gets.
